Thanks for the help. However, I couldn't find where discussions on
dual-booting XP/Solaris are covered?

BTW, while the Linux version of GRUB does not understand the Solaris UFS
partition, the "makeactive "command makes it possible for Solaris to be
chainloaded from Linux a boot.

What I still don't understand is, whether it is possible to install the Solaris
version of GRUB on the first sector of the partition where Solaris (or more
specifically, the Solaris boot sector) is installed?

Most Linux distros ask you this option during installation (i.e., do you want
to install GRUB in the MBR or the first sector of a specific partition). I
don't remember this question being asked during Solaris installation.

OK, thanks for that. I've now got Solaris installed and running fine. The next
step was to get the network up and running, since Solaris didn't recognise it
aat first due to it being a Realtek card rebadged as a D-Link DFE-528TX, which
has different vendor and device IDs. I've got the network working using the
instructions at:

http://solaris-x86.org/documents/tutorials/network.mhtml

but DNS doesn't seem to be working properly. nslookup gets addresses fine, but

DNS working properly?

The little window showing what is the current language you can
input is called "status area window" or "input mode selection window."
The status area is a terminology being used in X11 window system BTW.

You can turn this window on and off by using the steps described in
the following URL:

http://developer.sun.com/techtopics/global/products_platforms/jds/reference/faqs/input-mode-window.html

If you'd like to also know on how to switch among supported input
languages, please see "Accessing an Input Mode" and also the next a few
sections of the S10 International Language Environments Guide at
the following:

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-2521/6mi67tj50?a=view

Also, it seems there is a bug somewhere between GTK+ and Input Method
implementation that using mouse to click on the status area may not be
working with any GTK+ applications in some cases. In that case, please use
input mode switch key sequences instead.

The above is for UTF-8 locales by the way. If you're interested in Russian
KOI8-R locale, you can use Contrl+T, Control+Space, or Compose c c
key sequences to toggle between Russian and English. One way to also
examine about the toggle/switch key sequences is to look at
SWITCH_STATE_TO key values at /usr/openwin/lib/locale//Compose
file where the could be something like ru_RU.KOI8-R but
that's not supported Stable interface and can be changed in future
without any notice.

[osol-discuss] Re: Hang installing b20

2005-09-14 Thread Jürgen Keil
This blog entry describes the acpi-user-options settings:
  http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/chewmyblog?entry=a_bit_more_elucidation_on

acpi-user-options=2 completely disables ACPI.

With acpi-user-options=8, ACPI is not disabled, but the kernel won't use ACPI
to reconfigure interrupt
vectors. This is basically the same mode that Solaris 10 x86 is using. The
kernel will use the
interrupt vector that was setup by the system's BIOS.

When acpi-user-options is not set, and the uppc's variable
uppc_unconditional_srs is patched to 0,
ACPI is enabled, and can be used to reconfigure a device's interrupt vector.
But: valid interrupt
assignments from the system's BIOS are used and are not changed.

  http://cvs.opensolaris.org/source/xref/usr/src/uts/i86pc/io/psm/uppc.c#82

http://cvs.opensolaris.org/source/xref/usr/src/uts/i86pc/io/psm/uppc.c#uppc_acpi_irq_configure

The problem with the VIA chipsets is, that snv with newboot tries to change the
USB controller's
interrupt vector using the ACPI interpreter, but neither the ACPI interpreter
(using the BIOS ACPI tables)
nor the Solaris kernel correct the USB controller's PCI interrupt line
configuration byte, and with the VIA
chipset the PCI interrupt line configuration byte is the ultimate setting to
actually change the interrupt
vector the USB controller will use to send its interrupts.

The workarounds try *not* to change valid interrupt assigments from the
system's BIOS.

Woo, managed to cheat the installer by pulling the usb cable out during the
sysidcfg stage, i got some device is in use messages and when it had complete i
pulled the device out again, no messages, then a sense key error, then it fired
up X for the installer... so during that period normally the device seems to
lose its way or not get mounted, but by pulling it out and in the installer
seems to remember to mount /cdrom .. cool, now it works ...

[osol-discuss] GNOME 2.12.0 for Solaris - 100% completed

2005-09-14 Thread ken mays
Hello,

1. Solaris port of Gnome 2.12.0 Platform - 100%
completed.
2. Solaris port of Gnome 2.12.0 Desktop (core
packages) - 100% completed

I'm reviewing optional packages like Totem 1.2.0,
Howl, and Evolution 2.4.0.

The Solaris port took 3 days for over 50+ GNOME
packages and QA review for basic issues. Automation
would have taken one day, yet I reviewed the Solaris
build and various GNOME 2.12 Linux distros over the
last three days. I've looked at the latest versions of
DBUS/HAL/Howl and Cairo for the Solaris port to ensure
we had the most current versions available at this
time.

If Schillix gets upgraded to Nevada >=b22, I'd hope to
test a few things on that as well.
