opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.orgI was asked to move the compiles on the CCD to gcc and have done that. The KDE that we put out initially will be Stefan's current Studio compiled one.I think it will stay that way so long as that the Studio version is the one that works best.
Once all this is out in the world for people to contribute to, the setup should allowthe developer to use either Studio or gcc by editing the Makefiles to point tothat compiler and making sure any dependencies are there for users.  In fact, in some of the
CCD builds, I used gcc 2.95.3 because the compiles failed with gcc 3.4.3.  So, it should notthat hard to pick the compiler if one is better than another.Moving KDE to gcc might turn out to be a good thing, just an experiment, or a waste
of time.  I presume that this will be determined by how many people want to do it..  Asfar as the CCD builds go, I suspect contributors will simply choose the compilerthey want to use and, so long as the software builds in the environment and creates no major conflicts, it should be OK.

Little steps dudes - let's get the sources out there first [1], and then
start working on getting it built with Sun Studio. Part of the delay in
releasing them is that people are trying to solve world hunger first,
rather than taking a progressive evolution when we get the community
live and kicking.

I think a lot of people would really like that.

I thought the great thing about Stefan's KDE build was that it was
compiled using Sun Studio compilers. You plan to take this away? Maybe
it's harder, but couldn't you try compiling the Companion CD environment
with Sun Studio?

Actually a good question. With respect to 64bit gcc is
the current Sun distribution the only standard for Solaris?

With regard to KDE. I am currently putting Stefan's KDE work on

Good to see things are moving forward, but why gcc?

First, my sincere apologies to all for being missing from these discussions for a while.  My work load, like all of yours surely, has been, and still is, heavy.   I also wanted to have something actually constructive to say.
In summary -With regard to KDE.  I am currently putting Stefan's KDE work on sunfreeware.com and itsmirrors for use, testing, comments, etc.  I hope to put an announcement up this weekend
when I am sure it is all there and Stefan says it is OK.  The next step will be getting it into the Companion CD environment - then eventually compiled with gcc and some or all of the CCD libraries. This new part will take a bit of time.
With regard to the Companion CD itself, I have taken the old Sun CCD build environment andmoved all the compiles to gcc, updated some of the sources, edited all theMakefiles and install scripts, updated the SCCS elements, added the CDDL where
needed, etc. etc.  I have clean builds on SPARC and x86 on Solaris 10 and 11.I have also built the sccs to subversion conversion programs and moved the sccs workspace toan svn one.  That is in testing now.  I still need to document this.
I have created a wiki that contains up-to-date information on all the programs and a fewnew ones and also a long document on how the entire CCD build process is currently done.  Thisdocument is certainly what I would call a "first draft".
This has all been done because, basically, the CCD build environment was not in good shape, there was almost no documentation, and most things just did not work.We still need to set up the hardware, networking, etc so that the community can get to
all the files in an organized way.  I am sure that there will be a lot of critical (hopefully not too hostile) comments about what I have done so far and many many ideas on changes, upgrades, and so forth.I am looking forward to having the community take over so that all of us can contribute
in a good way.  I certainly hope what I have done will make that happen.I am still doing a lot of sunfreeware work as requests for software in that form seem togrow.  Then, just for "fun", I do Mathematica newsgroup moderation, our MathTensor software support, and as a hobby and because I may be an insane person, I am working on a book on Relativity Theory to be published I hope in late 2006, but probably 2007.
Anyway, Happy New Year to all.  More details in January.  Feel free to contact me directlywith questions at [EMAIL PROTECTED].Steve C.
