[osol-discuss] OpenSolaris b121 and printing
Hi, I downloaded the development build (osol-1002-121-x86.iso) and installed it as a VBox client using VirtualBox 2.2.4 on my Solaris host giving the VBox host access to the network. Everything is okay except for the printing to my network connected HP Photosmart C6280. My Solaris host and VBox windows xp client can both successfully access the printer. However, after configuring OpenSolaris b121 to access the printer after configuring it with either the Solaris LP Print Manager or the Print Manager the printer is configured and indicated as ready, print jobs can be sent but nothing it printed and I can not find any error in the logs. Using Solaris LP Print Manager configuration is as follows :- Printer Name: hp1 Printer Server: localhost Description: hp photosmart c6280 Printer Make: HP Printer Model: HP Photosmart c6280 series Foomatic/hpijs Printer Driver: SUNWhpijs(S):, hpijs 2.8.7.3 Fault Notification: Write to Superuser Destination: hpdeskjet:9100 Protocol: TCP Options: Default printer Banner: Never Print Banner User Access list: All Or using Print Manager Type: Socket Name or IP Address: hpdeskjet Port:9100 Local Queue Name: deskjet Description: hp photosmart c6280 Manufacturer: HP Model:HP Photosmart c6200 series Foomatic/hpijs Driver:, hpijs 2.8.7.3 Set as default printer queue: Yes I have checked connectivity, it is possible to telnet to port 9100 on the printer from OpenSolaris VBox install. Surely getting printing to work should be a simple matter of running Print Manager and everything working. As a matter of interest is Solaris LP Print Manager depreciated and being replaced by Print Manager? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
[osol-discuss] 2-button simulating middle-click feature stops working mid-session?
I have a Toshiba Tecra M10, and the mouse pad has two buttons. Most of the time, I can highlight some text using the left button (click and drag as normal), then I can press both buttons together to paste in a target window (i.e. simulating the middle click). This mostly works (and I usually copy-n-paste this way), but at some point during my login session, it stops working, and instead I only ever get the right-click context menu. I've not worked out what changes this, and I've not got a clue where to start diagnosing this. Can anybody lend a hand in helping diagnose this? My usual applications are Firefox, Thunderbird, pidgin, gnome-terminals and a couple of java applets (although I'm fairly sure I can see this problem without launching any stand-alone java apps). Once it's happened, if I close all apps, the problem remains, so it is not the running presence of an app which is causing this. If I plug in a USB mouse, the middle button pastes the highlighted text as expected. Also (somewhat strangely), if I press both USB mouse buttons together, it simulates the middle correctly! It only seems to be the builtin mouse pad buttons which break in this fashion. Re: [osol-discuss] OpenSolaris b121 and printing
This looks like a known issue and I'm pretty sure that there is a bug filed against it, though I can't seem to locate it (See http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=87603tstart=0). There are two possible workarounds here. 1. modify the interface script that LP uses to print to the printer (/etc/lp/interfaces/{queue}so that it runs /usr/lib/cups/filterfoomatic-rip-hplip instead of /usr/lib/lp/bin/foomatic-rip 2. switch to CUPS and create your queue under CUPS. # pkg install SUNWcups # svccfg import /var/svc/manifest/application/cups.xml # print-service -s cups You can create your queue by launching System - Administration - Printer Manager after switching to CUPS, CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/admin/), or lpadmin (1cups) man -s 1cups lpadmin -Norm russell aspinwall wrote: Hi, I downloaded the development build (osol-1002-121-x86.iso) and installed it as a VBox client using VirtualBox 2.2.4 on my Solaris host giving the VBox host access to the network. As a matter of interest is Solaris LP Print Manager depreciated and being replaced by Print Manager? Yes, the OSPM (Print Manager) is intended as a replacement for the Solaris LP Print Manager. When you switch to CUPS, the Printer Manager menu item launches system-config-printer, which should look remarkably familiar to folks using the more common Linux distributions. ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
[osol-discuss] Are there bounties?
Hello, just a quick idea that I had, I'm concerned of the lack of ZFS to expand a RAIDZ just increasing the number of drives in the RAIDZ itself. I would pay (not so much) for having it. Surely there are other people that would want to have another things working on opensolaris. Re: [osol-discuss] b121 hangs during boot on my laptop
Is this perhaps bug 6867906 ? Synopsis: Kernel hangs during boot in startup_bios_disk with snv_120 http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6867906 Absolutely! You are the winner! ... Oh btw, is there a way I can patch the kernel permanently at dobiosdev so I don't have to stop in the debugger each time during boot? In theory by adding a set dobiosdev=0 command in /etc/system. I haven't tested it, but I think the dobiosdev variable might be used very early during boot, before the /etc/system file is processed. In case the /etc/system set command doesn't work, you have to patch the dobiosdev variable in the /platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix and/or /platform/i86pc/kernel/unix kernel file echo 'dobiosdev?W 0' | mdb -w /platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

[osol-discuss] zfs data loss after crash
Hi, I had an opensolaris instance (b118) completely crash the other day (entirely my fault) and I took one of my mirrored zfs drives and imported into another system in order to retrieve the data. I imported the data via zpool import -f id pool and I just noticed that the data is way out of date. Most of the files look like I have lost 2 weeks worth of data. So, my questions are: 1) Is this expected? 2) Is there anyway to get my recent data back? thanks, Scott ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
[osol-discuss] ssh sessions hang under vmware?
When running opensolaris as a guest under vmware workstation, I constantly have a problem with ssh sessions hanging/disconnecting. These are sessions from the workstation logging into the OS guest. It doesn't seem to be any sort of idle timeout as it can happen after 2 min of being idle or 24 hours of being idle. Sometimes the sessions will just abruptly disconnect and sometimes they'll hang and not receive input for maybe 30 seconds, but then come back to life for a while. None of my linux guests have this problem under the same setup so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going on. Any clues? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
