Is there a chance that the related bugs introduced around nv117 will be fixed?

Note that all the time before there have been no problems and that firefox
now fails although LD_* do not try to introduce incompatible libs.

Do you have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set in your environment? Unset it and
try again, and then understand why we tell you not to do that.

That would explain why it works with pfexec, since that strips LD_*

Thanks for your quick reply!

I have been told by the application people that the tools, (many of
which the source has been lost and thus cannot be altered anymore) have
been written in Visual Basic and use functions like:
FindFirstFile()/FindNextFile()/FindClose(), so dir isn't actually used,
but it shows the same behaviour as the named VB functions.

These functions seem to provoke people to not worry about the filenames
too much, and let legacy programmers, NTFS B-tree sort this for them,
"accidentally" giving them the correct alphabetical order. However, now
that we don't use NTFS anymore, the legacy approach breaks.

Even though it might be POSIX compliant, is there any way to configure a
workaround, either in ZFS, CIFS, or another layer of the stack ? (even a
switch of a system wide parameter on the winXP/Win2K CIFS client machine
will do, however I'm probably in the wrong forum to get an answer to
that question ;)

Hi,

IIRC UFS will give you files in order they were created from readdir()
while ZFS will return basically in random order. Technically speaking
both approaches are ok (no specification broken such as POSIX) AFAIK.

Now tools like ls will sort output in alphabetical order by default and
it seems like DOS dir returns in whatever order it got it from readdir().

Maybe there is a switch to dir you can use to force sorting output?

If we map a CIFS share on the 7410 to a drive letter on a winXP client, we
observe that when we do a `dir`from a dosbox on the mapped drive, the files
are shown in a seemingly random order. The files that are in the directory are
scans (processed through about 20 high-speed human operated scanners) and they
have filenames that could look like this:

scan001.tif
scan002.tif
scan003.tif
scan004.tif
scan005.tif

The numbers represent the order that they are scanned in. The directory listing
that we get when we type dir, will show something like

scan003.tif
scan002.tif
scan005.tif
scan001.tif
scan004.tif

While if we copy the files to an NTFS or FAT32 filesystem, we will see the
files in the desired order.

Now, why is this a problem ? Obviously the 7410 cluster hasn't been around for long. The scanners used to scan to several Windows Storage Server with an FCAL SAN, which needed to be replaced. The data was copied from the old storage boxes to the 7410. All of the older applications that perform batch-processing on the files in these directories, rely on the order that the OS gives them the filenames, which, when using CIFS to the Windows Storage Servers, was alphabetical, but now it seems random. This frustrates the batchprocessing to an unacceptable level. We don't have the option to rewrite the legacy applications on the short term, especially since in many cases the source code is no longer available.

Is there a way to force the CIFS server to serve directory listings in
alphabetical order ? Or can zfs be forced to serve directory listings to the
CIFS server in alphabetical order ?

A similar, but not quite identical issue on ext3 was discussed in this thread:

http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2009-January/071152.html

which confirms that NTFS uses a B-Tree sort before it serves a directory
listing. Also it confirms that the original poster has been able to solve the
problem by setting dir_index OFF and using tune2fs.

Is there a solution that will let the ZFS/CIFS server combo behave in a
comparable way ?

Many thanks,

Frans

Re: [osol-discuss] CDE hang issue on Solaris 10

You need to take this to your local Sun Solution Centre, rather than
posting to this mailing list (which is for opensolaris, not Solaris 10).

Solaris 10 kernel 118833-36 is now really old, and whilst probably not
related directly to your problem, does give a clue as to how currently
patched your system may be. SunSolve shows quite a few patches for CDE
on Solaris 10. The Sun Support guys would be able to deal with this for
you, as well as sifting through the relevant patches and/or
configuration issues.

Re: [osol-discuss] "2-button simulating middle-click" feature stops working mid-session?

2009-09-30 Thread Brian Ruthven - Solaris Network Sustaining - Sun UK

Hi Alan,

Finally, this just happened to me again.
FWIW, I updated to snv_124 yesterday, and with no external mouse plugged
in, I see the "(II) 3rd Button detected: disabling emulate3Button" line
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (full file attached).

I've been using the system for approx 1 hour so far, and only using the
touchpad.

What further diagnosis would I need before filing a bug?

Thanks,
Brian

Most of the time, I can highlight some text using the left button (click
and drag as normal), then I can press both buttons together to paste in
a target window (i.e. simulating the middle click).

This mostly works (and I usually copy-n-paste this way), but at some
point during my login session, it stops working, and instead I only ever
get the right-click context menu.

The default configuration of Xorg is to recognize left+right as emulating
a third button until/unless a third button is actually clicked, at which
point it assumes you don't need it any more.

Unfortunately, on builds before about 119, the default on Solaris is to
open /dev/mouse and have the kernel combine all mouse like devices into
a single output stream, so a click on an external mouse will disable it
on all mice. With the switch to hal-based input hotplug in 119 and later,
each mouse is individually opened, so it should track each one seperately.

I've not worked out what changes this, and I've not got a clue where to
start diagnosing this.

Any messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about disabling 3 button emulation?

You should look at Milax and it's zfsinstall script:

[osol-discuss] Minimal OpenSolaris

2009-09-30 Thread agvk
Hey Guys,
I created a minimal OpenSolaris ISO using new Distro Constructor.

But i am getting problem when I try to create boot archive after copying all
stuff from ISO onto the disk.

# bootadm update-archive -R /zfsroot
bootadm: mkdir of /zfsroot//platform/i86pc/amd64/archive_cache failed: No such
file or directory

Why is this error occurring?
