It's been posted a number of times to this mailing list that you can build the
OpenSolaris sources on the OpenSolaris distro, including several in the last
day in this very thread.

IPS is a packaging system, not a bug. (It has lots of bugs, and a lot
of needed features aren't yet implemented, but that's expected.)

> Where is the current complete list of remaining problems?

All the ones we know about are in http://bugs.opensolaris.org and
http://defect.opensolaris.org (except for security bugs which are
unfortunately only visible in the Sun-internal bug database). If
there are problems that you see with the system that aren't filed
in either place, then they're not on anyone's list but your own.

We're not waiting for it to be perfect first - software never is,
and will always have bugs, and since this is all development builds,
not production releases, isn't even expected to be feature-complete.

IPS is not a problem; it's a packaging system. If you have a specific
issue with the Image Packaging System, please file a bug
defect.opensolaris.org or post to pkg-discuss.

Well, 4 years ago, I posted a list of problems (mostly missing files) that
prevented to compile OpenSolaris on OpenSoaris. Nobody did ever try to
cooperate in order work on this list. Nobody did ever report that this list
was completely outdated and compiling OpenSolaris on OpenSolaris works now.

The fact that Indiana introduced a "primary adminstrator" role introduced a
security bug. 10 months ago, I became aware that Sun did introduce an even
bigger security problem while trying to hide (but not to fix) the problem.
I did send a seecurity alert 10 months ago, but the system still exists.

Where is the current complete list of remaining problems?

Once we know this, we can start to discuss when a transition may be possible.

Probably. Time will tell. I personally believe that there is an
intention to stop producing SXCE. I have my doubts it is achievable in
two months time frame. OTOH, I may be underinformed.

After all there are no _external_ presentations emphasizing "not
treating internal & external developers differently" :)

The difference is, SXCE will not be available to the public, but will still
be available internally.

Interesting theory...

There is little point to make SXCE to be available internally. The whole
idea of jurassic to eat one own dog food. If it is not good enough for
Sun, it can not be good for others to consume.

Nope - we're stopping building it at the same time for everyone.

Hi,

I guess this is the possible migration plan:
- install IPS on SXCE
- create ZFS dataset for new BE
- create image on mounted filesystem
- update uuid, boot-archive, SMF and such
- create new grub entry and reboot into OS BE
