Pen-Yuan:
Please excuse my ignorance as a totally new user of OpenSolaris (and unix/linux
systems!).
Is there a way to easily install alternative window mangers such as Openbox or
Fluxbox for this system? I've got two questions that are more specific:
1. Are there any specific tips for compiling and installing these window
managers in OpenSolaris?
2. How do I add them to the sessions menu at the login screen? What files
should I configure and where should I place .Xclient files, if at all?
Thank you very much!
By default, OpenSolaris ships with two window managers: compiz and
metacity. You can switch by going to Preference-Appearance and
go to the Visual Effects tab. If None is chosen, then metacity
is used. If any other choice is selected, then compiz is used.
The spec-files-extra SVN repository has a number of alternative window
managers you can use, such as enlightenment, mutter, windowmaker,
xmonad, fluxbox, openbox, LXDE, etc. Information about spec-files-extra
is here:
http://pkgbuild.sourceforge.net/spec-files-extra/
To build these spec-files, you need to install and use the CBE.
Instructions are here:

If you run gconf-editor, and go to the key:
desktop-gnome-session-required_components, then you can
specify a different window manager program if you install one.
Whatever window manager is specified in this key will be used
with GNOME.
However, some alternative window managers install a desktop
file to /usr/share/xsessions, so that you can launch them via
picking an alternative session from the login screen, GDM.
