Re: [osol-discuss] X58 and i7?

2009-04-12 Thread William Bauer
Well, no one answered, but I have since confirmed both from Intel/Solaris press
and my own testing that i7, X58 and ICH10 are a fine match with OpenSolaris
2008.11. However, as with all of the ICHxR chipsets, if you can't disable the
RAID in the BIOS by setting it to AHCI/non-RAID mode, you will have to settle
for IDE/ATA compatibility mode. In my brief tests, there doesn't seem to be a
huge performance hit, although I'd prefer to keep everything "native".

For anyone curious, the Dell XPS 435 series are 100% compatible with
2008.11--audio and all. The 435MT doesn't currently have an ACHI non-RAID mode
for its SATA controller (set it to ATA), but the 435T does. Nice to have 12GB+
of memory to use with VB.

It works with ASUS P6T Deluxe X58 and the i7 920 processor. The only issue with
this board so far that I have noticed is that OpenSolaris doesn't have drivers
for the Marvell network chip, you have to install them yourself.

Which version? I have a P6T and the NIC works out of the box with build

Are you running in AHCI or IDE mode? IIRC the P6T defaults to IDE mode.

I'm going up in smoke trying to get snv 113 or 2008.11 to run on my P6T Deluxe
V2 in AHCI mode. I can install just fine, and get to grub, but after that I
just get a glimpse of the opensolaris slider then an immediate reboot :(

Solaris 10 u7 works OK in AHCI mode, so this is really frustrating.

Thanks John,
Now I'm really confused. :) 113 and 2008.11 fall over immediately
on my machine. I just installed 2008.05 and that works OK.

The only other wrinkle I can think of is I'm installing to the 2nd
hard drive. There were issues in the past where the grub menu pointed
at the wrong drive, but not in this case AFAICS.

Thanks again for the info,
Bill

Re: [osol-discuss] X58 and i7?

2009-05-09 Thread William D Waddington
*ahem*

I don't want to leave any false impressions on this thread for my fellow
pilgrims to trip over... Solaris 10 u7 and the SNVs I've tried run OK on this
Asus P6T Deluxe V2.

Where I got into trouble was my two installs of Solaris on the same machine.
I've been doing that for years without problems. After tricking the installers
w/IDs and active flags, Sol 10 and 11 co-existed fine, and I could test my
drivers.

Thing is, I was using System Commander as my boot manager. It was hiding one
Solaris partition from the other at boot time - without me realizing it. I've
lately switched to grub for boot management. It wasn't hiding anything, so
_all_ my Solaris installs would explode mid-boot. S10 U7 worked since it was
the first install - but crashed later after S11 was installed. No warning, no
useful error messages that I could see - just SPLAT.

My fix is to use the parttype command in the appropriate grub stanzas to fiddle
the partition ID of the Solaris that _isn't_ being booted to hide it from the
one that is. Works fine, and all is well for now.

http://blogs.sun.com/bobn/entry/a_grub_configuration_for_multiple

Sorry about all the noise, but I didn't want to leave my bad info uncorrected.

(I still have to figure out why Solaris menu power down turns off the power
LED, but leaves the power supply on...)

Thanks to all who replied,
Bill

Forget the Intel RAID. You don't need it with OpenSolaris.

You will not be able to install if the DVD is SATA in AHCI mode. You will have
to switch to compatible mode. If you want RAID1 system disk, follow the well
known procedure.

Is this specific to the P6T or do you believe it is
necessary for all X58/ICH10 motherboards? On my

I am not sure. I've had this on at least three different machines (one
was an HP Z600 dual Nehalem w/s; this now has been upgraded to a dual
Westmere with the same result (kinda nice to see 24 CPUs in operation,
though).
