At the time I wrote that chapter in OpenSolaris Bible, we thought ZFS encryption would be out within a few months and felt that it was worth providing a couple of paragraphs on it. IIRC, you can do encryption with loopback devices, which while not ideal, does work as an interim solution until encrypted datasets are available. Why do OpenSolaris Bible and Pro OpenSolaris both mention that zfs has encryption? I was under the impression that it has not yet been included in the shipping code. I've downloaded build 134 and can find no evidence that zfs has encryption capability, but I'm no expert either.
