Sridhar this will help you: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

What you have posted below tells me nothing about what you are trying to
achieve. If you are too lazy to ask a question in a way that makes it easy
for others to help you. frankly, others will just ignore your posts.

If your problem is that their software is not packaged for OpenSolaris you
can do either:
1 - Port it yourself
2 - Ask them to to it for you

Re: [osol-discuss] install apps intended for other unix variants

2009-10-22 Thread sridhar
i have to know the apps/programs needed to install the sources.
i have to install those apps.
i have to go thru the commands and their functionality.
i have to then use them on the source in my home dir (where i am truly free to
do the things i want. It is as if i am restricted only to my bedroom with
attached restroom leaving all other portions of my house to outsiders. This is
funny, but neither insulting and nor patronizing. but it is good way to make
others with different views to know my feelings.)
If i want to copy the source to different directory, execute there and copy the
binary disto to another dir, i have to go thru lot of cui commands to get
permissions. In windows, i can not even install such a thing.

Re: [osol-discuss] install apps intended for other unix variants

2009-10-22 Thread Terry A. Glass
Opensolaris is probably easier to install than any Linux distribution I've ever
used, certainly easier than any of the big 3 BSDs. Sure binary packages don't
exist for every package under the sun (no pun intended) yet, but most apps are
pretty straightforward compiles. If you lack the technical expertise to do
that, you'll just have to wait until someone is generous enough to do it for
you and publish their results.

2009-10-22 Thread Che Kristo
Sridhar,

I hope I am not too blunt in saying this but you would do well to first take
the effort to Google for your answers before asking others to do it for you,
i.e if you want documentation for opensolaris, google "opensolaris
documentation". There are a lot of folks who love to help, but, like you
have limited amounts of time dedicated to providing free support.

Be adventurous and just give OpenSolaris a try, play around, click on
things, install things, change things google for your questions...if you
can't find answers feel free to ask.

I am posting this as linus torvald (at least if you recognise him as one of the
several system programmers is okay with me) tells something about installation
of operating systems. But, I think it will hold good for all kinds of
applications.
http://news.oreilly.com/2008/07/linux-torvalds-on-linux-distri.html
Go thru what linus torvalds tell about ease of installation.
I copy pasted 2 and third paras of grey coloured portion of interview page.

of my main issues - I'm a technical person, but I have a very specific area of

the ones that encourage you to compile your own programs etc.

Yeah, I can do it, but it kind of defeats the whole point of a distribution for
me. So I like the ones that have a name of being easy to use. I've never used
plain Debian, for example, but I like Ubuntu. And before Debian people attack
me - yeah, I know, I know, it's supposedly much simpler and easier to install
these days. But it certainly didn't use to be, so I never had any reason to go
for it."

Re: [osol-discuss] install apps intended for other unix variants

2009-10-20 Thread Tomas Bodzar
1) Use as much as possible apps from official repositories or some third party
repositories

2) If it's not enough then consider using some virtualization

3) If it's still not enough then learn how to compile apps on OpenSolaris, how
to prepare apps for IPS in OpenSolaris and so on

There are a number of ways you can achieve this on OpenSolaris using
virtualbox, xvm, zones, wine etc. you will need to provide an actual
specific use case to the list if you want pointed information about this.

How to install / setup applications (that are intended for
unix/linux/bsd/debian/novell, etc) from internet?
