Not only that, it is valuable to figuring out *what* incompatibilities exist. Remember, compatibility can be broken as long as there is a well though-out plan for dealing with it. In some cases, that means restoring certain aspects of compatibility in others it means ignoring incorrectly written programs that don't follow the documentation and should have never worked anyway.
