You should learn to use Live Upgrade, then if an upgrade fails, you can
revert back to your previous version.

You would be better working out what went wrong (knowing which version
you upgraded from would help) and fixing it.

[osol-help] How to install Solaris without loss of existing data

2008-02-03 Thread Miroslav Nachev
Hi,

Is there any way to install new fresh Solaris copy under old
installation without loss of existing data? I am asking because
yesterday I run Solaris Update/Upgrade b81 and after that my Solaris
stop working. The GUI is not working, the network is not working, etc.
After that I do new installation but then my existing data is lost. Is
there any option to prevent disk formating and erasing?

If I have huge data in my disk with will be extremely dis-comfortable
every time to copy the data in another disk through network and after
installation to return it back.

Miro.

Maybe, but why bother when we have ZFS?

There are drivers for well known SATA RAID cards, but the onboard
chipset RAID probably isn't worth the effort.

Run this tool:

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp

and find out. You won't find find a driver for SATA RAID, but the
controller should be OK in non-RAID mode, which is more use with Solaris.

2008-02-03 Thread Uwe Dippel
bash-3.2$ cat /etc/passwd
root:x:0:0::/root:/usr/bin/bash

If I remove the /root *only from /etc/passwd* but leave the /root directory,
and make /etc/passwd:
root:x:0:0:Super-User:/:/sbin/sh
X starts properly.

HOME for user anyuser is still at '/', but there are at least read permissions.
No, on nv70 and nv78 both work perfectly well.

I'll file my bug report(s) now ...

Thanks, Lars, for your help

Re: [osol-help] Problem with ethernet card drivers

2008-02-03 Thread isaac
Miro,

I /believe /there are more drivers in the SXDE version then in Solaris
10, as SXDE is slightly ahead.

You can download any of them and burn them on your own, if you don't
need the official media kit.

There's also a "live CD" of project indiana (an opensolaris developer
preview) that you can burn an .iso of, and boot into, to verify if that
distribution has the driver support you require.

You can either download S10 or Solaris express devloper edition
Or you can BUY a Solaris 10 DVD set, for $35

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp

>From Intels WEB site:

The PRO/100 VE adapter does not work in a PCI slot. It will only work in a
Communication and Network Riser (CNR) slot in computers that have this slot and
utilize the Intel 82801BA I/O controller hub (a.k.a. ICH2), such as the Intel
D815EEA motherboard.

Im not sure if the 82801BA I/O controller has a driver in solaris ?
Im afraid this could be a MS Windows only special.

After a couple of reboots, nautilus no longer crashes. Everything seems to be

[osol-help] The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed

2008-02-03 Thread Miroslav Nachev
Hi,

Many times I try to install Windows XP under Solaris without success.
Every time the same problem:
One dialog form named "Files Needed" is shown with the following text:
The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.
Copy files from: GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386

I try to use different ISO images, created in different way but every
time the result is the same. Also I try with Windows XP SP1 with similar
result.
Can you give me some idea how to install Windows XP? Are there any ready
images with installed Windows XP ?

[osol-help] Problem with ethernet card drivers

2008-02-03 Thread Arun Baghel
Sir,
I installed solaris 10 recently on my computer. After that I noticed
that ethernet card is not being detected.
I searched the internet in vainthere i could see that it is being said
that a bug is reported that's why the default drivers can't be installed
directly from the DVD itself.
I'm using intel pro 100 VE ethernet card.
Please notify me what to do. I'm facing a lot of problems.
Also Sir how can I get the DVD for solaris installation.
