Re: [osol-help] pkg image-update -R ?
Thanks. I was aware of package timeout. I get actual breaks in the internet connection. I know the IPS guys are trying to get it to be something like apt where if your connection is completely broken you restart from where you left off when your connection resumes. [osol-help] failed boot after opensolaris upgrade to snv_93
I ve had little or no problems using live update and ufs with solaris 10. had a new machine so i installed opensolaris from the live dvd. it installed as one slice on an entire disk. added a dns server to the list in resolv.conf zpool attach rpool c6d0s0 c7d0 - to mirror on another disk. list and status came out aok. ran package manager from the gnome interface, added open office and punched update all. downloaded about 4 gigs, they installed with no errors. rebooted, saw that snv_93 was part of the updated packages now the boot fails, machine reboots to fast to see the errors, tried adding -v to the grub boot lines and can see that i get into , i think maybe, the modules. still cant slow the bugger down from rebooting anyone please tell me how to 1. maybe mount the zfs file system from the live cd soi ran read the logs etc, or 2. do some kind of step by step boot up thru the modules or 3. how can i best reconfigure the zfs file system and create a backup BE. sorry not real familar with zfs. thanks for any help. i got work to do and am gonna be real cranky if I have to go back to windows or unbuntu tomorrow to do it. hehe This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
[osol-help] Sound Juicer /Gstreamer Problem!
Sound Juicer doesn't want to start at all. When I try to make it start, I receive the following error: "Could not start Sound Juicer" "Reason: The plugin necessary for CD access was not found. Please consult the documentation for assistance." The output in the terminal: ( sound-juicer:885): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: cannot register existing type `GstBaseSrc' (sound-juicer:885): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gtype.c: line 2249: assertion `parent_type > 0' failed (sound-juicer:885): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gtype.c: line 2249: assertion `parent_type > 0' failed (sound-juicer:885): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gtype.c: line 2314: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_INSTANTIATABLE (instance_type)' failed (sound-juicer:885): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gtype.c: line 2249: assertion `parent_type > 0' failed (sound-juicer:885): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: file gstelementfactory.c: line 279: assertion `g_type_is_a (type, GST_TYPE_ELEMENT)' failed It appears to be a GStreamer error. The way I went about with installing GStreamer was that I had gotten it from blastwave.org, and merely moved it to my "/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10" and overwrote all the included Gstreamer files from the CD. Yes, a dumb idea. All of my media works. Heck, I'm even also able to mount data CDs. But when I put an Audio CD in, I get the above error messages. When I try to navigate to them in nautilus, they don't show anything on them. What do I need to do to fix this? Re: [osol-help] X86 jumpstart server for sparc
I started over with this jumpstart. I found an article on the web regarding a similar issue. I renamed my original solaris jumpstart directory, mounted the solaris 10 update 5 iso on the sparc server and ran the setup_install_server from my laptop. I re-ran the jumpstart using mtu 1496 and it's working. Thanks for your help. This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-help] Package manager and pkg stopped downloading after upgrade to snv_91
If Comcast is your bandwidth provider, they do a lot of traffic shaping that adversely affects downloading updates from Opensolaris.org and internet access in general. Sometimes, once the freeze-ups have started, I can't even connect to or ping pkg.opensolaris.org without rebooting and waiting a while. While all this is happening, my internet browser on Solaris runs just fine. This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org

Re: [osol-help] pkg image-update -R ?
You can set an environment variable to extend the timeout for downloading packages: export PKG_CLIENT_TIMEOUT=220 The man page for pkg reveals that the -R flag is used to specify an alternate root. If by 'problem' you mean that IPS doesn't currently cache already downloaded bits, then yes you'll need to wait for them to get around to implementing that functionality. The -R parameter merely allows you to specify an alternate directory to perform pkg operations on. It's not a 'resume' parameter. I tried changing the mtu setting to 1492 and this didn't change the outcome. It still hangs. I can see that something is still transferring on the snoop but from the console of the client it just never moves. If you want to display an individual application, the best & simplest way is to use ssh -X. To use XDMCP for a full session, you will also need to enable the XDMCP protocol in dtlogin or gdm - for dtlogin, you need to run: svccfg -s cde-login setprop dtlogin/args=\"\" svcadm restart cde-login For gdm, I believe there's a gdmsetup option for it. -- -Alan Coopersmith- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Microsystems, Inc. - X Window System Engineering ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org

Re: [osol-help] HowTo update with liveupdate?
SOLVED While I *still* think that one needs to collect items from here or there, I have finally managed to liveupdate *another* machine, also from nv81 to (now) nv93 without any hitch. Everything went through exactly as described in here and elsewhere. On this, the successful, machine there is also not that confusion with the disk controllers, the disk (first SATA) is and remains c1d0, out and over. The answer/explanation on why it failed and fails so miserably on that other machine is still pending, though.
