Ok, for system cpu time usage: try to run a kernel
profile, to find out what kernel functions are consuming
the time, lockstat -kIW -D 20 sleep 15

Connect a serial cable with a null modem adapter to your second computer
(windows use hyperterminal) com1/ttya port and set your /etc/remote file i.e:
ttya:dv=/dev/cua/a:br#115200

on the server your trying to load edit grub and add option to the -B to the
grub menu (use e for edit) i.e:
-B
console=ttya,ttya-mode="115200,8,n,1,-",$ZFS-BOOTFS,prom_debug=true,kbm_debug=true
 -rv

then save the hyperterminal or run script to capture the output of tip ttya

100% system time of CPU0 when the CPU usage bumps up to 50%. Before it is
around 1-3 % for each CPU.

Re: [osol-help] NVIDIA vs ATI 3D acceleration on OpenSolaris

2009-08-06 Thread Hillel Lubman
Thanks, I saw them but I wanted some 15 inch laptop with high resolution. I
considered Lenovo W500 (which supports up to 1920x1200), but it only ships with
ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 and it's not a good option in this case. I guess I'll
have to look around more for NVIDIA based ones.

Thanks. NVIDIA in general it seems puts more effort on supporting different
UNIX platforms than ATI.

Did you have a look at "mpstat 1" output before and
after the jump to 50% cpu usage?

Does it consume user or system cpu time?

Hillel,

Are you aware Toshiba sells OpenSolaris laptops. You'll be guaranteed
everything works - sound, video, etc:

Absolutely NVIDIA - right now, there is almost no 3D acceleration
for any ATI cards, while NVIDIA provides their fully accelerated driver,
which is bundled into the OpenSolaris system.

There are also accelerated 3D drivers for Intel graphics, thanks to
Intels work to help port their accelerated open source drivers to
OpenSolaris, and they will also give better performance for now than
any ATI card could.

[osol-help] standard power.conf causes Ultra-20 to dump

Hi,

These are the default settings in power.conf:

device-dependency-property removable-media /dev/fb
autopm default
autoS3 default
cpu-threshold 1s
# Auto-Shutdown Idle(min) Start/Finish(hh:mm) Behavior
autoshutdown30 9:00 9:00 noshutdown
cpupm disable

I changed the settings for autopm and autoS3 to disable and all seems fine.

Any insights ? I thought all Sun desktops supported EPA directives and should
work with power mgmnt ?

See you on the bitsream, Alain

Re: [osol-help] OpenSolaris 2009.06 stalls always after some 5 minutes

2009-08-06 Thread Uwe Dippel
Yes, it is the Core 2 Duo (isainfo -k: amd64), and it runs in 'SATA Native
Mode' disabled. It wouldn't run XP the other way round. Bluetooth is disabled.

mdb says:
Kernel: 13%
ZFS File Data 8%
Anon 9%
Page cache 2%
Free (cachelist) 1%
Free 66%

Total 3311
Physical 3311

What I observed: the Gnome Resource Applet shows normal values, after around 5
minutes, whatever I do, the CPU will suddenly jump to 50% usage and stay there.
Then, and this is also reproducable, the external mouse becomes almost
unresponsive, while the touchpad gets 'jumpy' only. Then I have another 2
minutes or so to shut down, or the system will hang 100%.
