Re: [osol-help] NVIDIA vs ATI 3D acceleration on OpenSolaris
Thanks, I saw them but I wanted some 15 inch laptop with high resolution. I considered Lenovo W500 (which supports up to 1920x1200), but it only ships with ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 and it's not a good option in this case. I guess I'll have to look around more for NVIDIA based ones. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org

Hillel, Are you aware Toshiba sells OpenSolaris laptops. You'll be guaranteed everything works - sound, video, etc: http://www.opensolaris.com/toshibanotebook/index.html Regards, Brian Alan Coopersmith wrote: Hillel Lubman wrote: What is in better supported under OpenSolaris, NVIDIA or ATI video cards in regards to 3D acceleration? I was planning to get a new laptop and was considering the video card choice. Absolutely NVIDIA - right now, there is almost no 3D acceleration for any ATI cards, while NVIDIA provides their fully accelerated driver, which is bundled into the OpenSolaris system. There are also accelerated 3D drivers for Intel graphics, thanks to Intels work to help port their accelerated open source drivers to OpenSolaris, and they will also give better performance for now than any ATI card could. -- W. Yes, it is the Core 2 Duo (isainfo -k: amd64), and it runs in 'SATA Native Mode' disabled. It wouldn't run XP the other way round. Bluetooth is disabled. mdb says: Kernel: 13% ZFS File Data 8% Anon 9% Page cache 2% Free (cachelist) 1% Free 66% Total 3311 Physical 3311 What I observed: the Gnome Resource Applet shows normal values, after around 5 minutes, whatever I do, the CPU will suddenly jump to 50% usage and stay there. Then, and this is also reproducable, the external mouse becomes almost unresponsive, while the touchpad gets 'jumpy' only.
