Re: [osol-help] I want to upugrade my OBP on a Sparcstaion 20.

2007-09-18 Thread isaac
Chris,

I haven't read this thread in its entirety, but if you're not familiar
with Sunsolve, perhaps that'd be a nice
place to look.

http://sunsolve.sun.com is one of the Support centers of all things
Sun. If you go to the 'systems handbook' and select 'desktop/workstations',
then select 'Sparcstation 20', You'll get details about this system -
note, however, that I don't believe that OpenSolaris would
install on such an old system.

Regards,
Isaac

[osol-help] Video driver for intel x3100 - Toshiba Tecra A9

2007-10-16 Thread isaac

Hello,
I am helping a colleague whose got a Toshiba Tecra A9.

Installed SXDE 9/07

# uname -a
SunOS KOLOBOK 5.11 snv_70b i86pc i386 i86pc

Laptop contains an INTEL MEDIA ACCELERATOR X3100.

Running into issues with syncing display to an external monitor.

Looked in /etc/X11 and noticed references in files to an intel-specific 'i915resolution' utility.
Gave it a whirl, and got an error (below):

/# i915resolution -l
Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.4.5

Invalid chipset type

/Obviously. How can I have not realized this. :-)

Two questions:
1) Anyone know of a sample xorg.conf file that can be used on a Tecra A9 - to have concurrent display?

2) Any other recommendations ?

Thanks in advance,
Isaac

Iban,

Have you looked into BrandZ effort on opensolaris.org?
Depending on the distro, these *may* work fine in the lx brand?

Hi to all!

It is posible run in any way both GWT and Android devtoolkits in
OpenSolaris using Linux binaries? In most cases I should use
virtualization technologies or lxrun or wine tools or something more?

I dont want to switch again to Linux, since OpenSolaris rans very fine
for my work.

Thank you!

Re: [osol-help] new installation of the solaris 10, but I dont have access to Internet

2007-11-15 Thread Isaac
Tomas,

In addition to what Brian suggested, check that you've included " dns" after
"files" on the "hosts" line of /etc/nsswitch.conf and that you have valid dns
entries in /etc/resolv.conf

As for installing only the console (i.e. not installing the unwanted GUI bits)
you should look into the SUNWCrnet metacluster. Solaris gets installed based
on one of selected metaclusters (package groups) that you choose at install
time. It is one of essential enablers for building minimized
installations, providing you with flexibility to add desired packaged software
on top of it. There's also a Solaris Package Companion project that will
likely be of interest & help to you.

Regards,
Isaac

If you can figure out how to get to a commandline interface. (Terminal
or console).

A couple of things to check. Netstat -i to verify you have the correct
default route. ifconfig -a to make sure your IP settings are correct.
Try pinging your own IP and the default gateway's IP., then ping the
IP of your DNS server.

If they all work you need to check and fix your DNS settings..

(Try typing 'host www.yahoo.ca')

Hello,

Don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but just in case no one
has, the new (yet backward compatible) method for ensuring persistent
services and state across reboots is SMF.

Re: [osol-help] Problem with ethernet card drivers

2008-02-03 Thread isaac
Miro,

I /believe /there are more drivers in the SXDE version then in Solaris
10, as SXDE is slightly ahead.

You can download any of them and burn them on your own, if you don't
need the official media kit.

There's also a "live CD" of project indiana (an opensolaris developer
preview) that you can burn an .iso of, and boot into, to verify if that
distribution has the driver support you require.

Plenty of books, but I'd suggest starting here:

OK, as is the case with noobs like myself, I found the problem about about 5
minutes after this post. I did not have my /etc/nsswitch.conf set up to look
at my /etc/resolv.conf for my DNS information. So now I am online with my
wireless card and I can start googling for more information.

Is there a handbook like the one for FreeBDS that a noob like myself can read
and access as they get used to this new system?

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
