Re: [osol-help] Need help with virtualbox 3D Acceleration on OSOL B132

2010-02-16 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Well , after reading the documentation again I realised that this
3D experimental feature probably only works with
32bit winXP and 32bit Vista.

I triead a 32bit xp guest but the vbox additions caused it to crash.

On 32 bit vista business version i did get the 3D Acceleration to work.
However the Vista performance assement tool does not work with the vbox
guest
additions installed.
the 3D screensavers work though.

[osol-help] Need help with virtualbox 3D Acceleration on OSOL B132

2010-02-13 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi,

I am trying to get VirtualBOx 3D acceleration to work on OSOL B132 with VBox
3.1.4 Beta2 .
The PC is the Shuttle SN78SH7 barebone with the AMD Phenom II 965 with 4 GB RAM
and the PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 graphics card.

I tried VBox 3.1.2 first but did not get it to work so I swithed to 3.1.4 Beta2
First, I have fixed an Issue with OSOL B132. this one:

http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa ... &tstart=15

there is a problem with the symlink to an OPENGL library.
This error has been corrected.

with virtualbox I have tried the following:

1) Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
with IO-APIC 2 vCPU with AMD-v and Nested paging.
Installed guest additions in windos safe Mode.
The Windows performance assesment gives just the value 1.0 for graphics
performance.
( i.e. the lowest possible rating )

2) installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.
with IO-APIC 1 vCPU with AMD-v and Nested paging.
Installed guest additions in windos safe Mode.
The Windows performance assesment run crashes, and the whole
virtual machine chrashes and Aborts.

What do you reccomend that I do Now ?

the kernel does'nt see the boot disk which happens to be a 10Krpm WD raptor

Did something happen to the nv_sata driver in B123 ?

When I try to boot a B123 install CD the SATA disk is not visible from the
kernel
a boot to single user shell on the SXCE install DVD and fireing up "format"

that the system disk is not enumerated.

Any ideas ?

Ofcourse this is possible but then you need to know a username and two
passwords , fro direct root login you would only need a password.
In opensolaris2008:05 root login is disabled anyway as the root accoutn is a

Yes , its configured in/etc/vfstaband in /etc/path_to_inst
and its depentent on you having a USB soultion thats usable.

Its is possible to boot from USB as I have booted the the older Indiana Preview
from USB thanks to instrunctions in Dave Miners blog.

This is probably not a bug. Solaris is not designed to be able to move a
system configured for SATA to boot via USB.

it would be a request for enhancment in that case.
One possibility that might work is to do an upgrade install on the disk once
its moved , hovewer I have not tried to do that.

The way the libraries usually are structured is that
 libxxx-yy.so is a a symbolic link to libxxx-yy.so.version

when you compile a package you should make sure that the library
names it is runtime linked to is the libxxx-yy.so without the
final version specifier. The binary will then be able to work
even if the final version number changes with a patch or upgrade of Solaris.

if your present solaris installation have a "libldap-2.3.so.1" or
"libldap-2.3.so.2"
you can just symlink libldap-2.3.so.0 to the present version.
If your present ldap library is not libldap-2.3 but libldap-2.4 or something
else
you probably need to recompile Apache /php to make sure that
the subroutine calls are all inplace.

The cheap home-ADSL-routers do not have enough configurability for a complete
DCHP-DNS integrated setup.

two possibilities exists for DNS-DHCP integration .

1 ) Microsoft active directory DHCP and DNS

( this is probably not what we want to build as Solaris hackers )

2 ) ISC BIND ( DNS ) + ISC DCHP

ISC BIND is already included in Solaris , However SUN is shipping their own
DHCP server so the integration between DNS and DCHP is probably not that
good.

http://www.isc.org/index.pl

So the ADSL Router can possible be configured to Always offer the same IP
adress
to specific MAC addresses from a Specific NIC, and therefore ensure that a PC
always recives the same IP Adress. But the ADSL Router cant ship this info
off to a DNS server so that the IPadress gets associated with a name.
You can ofcourse build a DNS service with Static content. which will work
with the ADSL-ROuters Static list of preconfigured MAC_to _IP DHCP service.

However only the two case above will work with dynamically distributed IP
adresses.

Hi ,

If you have a PC with an AMD64 bit processor or compatible processor such
as
the Intel Core Duo 2 Solaris Kernel will automatically run in 64-bit mode
AFTER
you have installed it.

The Solaris installers run in 32 bit mode removing the need for two different
installers.

Versions of Linux and BSD has 32bit and 64 distros. Solaris does not,
because Solaris has had dual 32/64 bit functionality since Solaris 2.7
10 years ago.

Most of the Solaris utility programs are 32 bit running on top of a 64 bit
kernel.

All you see in the list of interfaces are the loopback interface. SOlaris has
not found you network adapter.

the commands that list the hardware in the system is

  /usr/X11/bin/scanpci

  and

   prtconf -pv

If the USB attached network adapter you mentioned above is the onlyone
you have i dont have much hope for you.
the easiaset solution in that case is to buy a " Intel Pro1000 GT " desktop NIC
for about $50 USD whic fits in an PCI slot on the motherboard.

Could be yet another case where the PCI:id's for your Hardware is missing
from Solaris Device database /etc/driver_aliases ( which is a text file )

RUn the program

/usr/X11/bin/scanpci and verify that the NIC devices PCI-ID's are
indeed included in /etc/driver_aliases file.

if not add them and then run the sys-unconfig procedure
sys-unconfig deletes the nodename and IP configuration and makes it
possible for you to enter the values again at the next reboot.

Are you sure its the S2892 ?

Why would they have a Workstation Motherboard in an 1U server.
this S2892 have PCIe 16xslotsfor Nvidia/ATI graphics cards.
My friend used this board as a Workstation. with dual Nvidia 8800 GTX SLI.
Tyan has other boards for Server purpouses.

How long is that ?more than 3 - 5 minutes ?

PLS be aware that you are able to login to solaris BEFORE all services
are started.

On SXCE the OSPM applet and GNOME Volume Manager crasch and coredump if
you log in
 to quickly.

If this time period is more than a few minutes I'll be worried if its less
its simply because
SMF is not finished starting all services you need.

Workaround is probably NOT to logon immediatly after GDM invites you to.

NWAM is a leap into new functionality which by definition is not
possible
to test on all permutations of PC hardware.

When SUN built solaris for SPARC the hardware was fully known.
When the 300 vendors from Taiwan deliver the hardware you'r in another
ballgame , the big problem being that a wifi card from RALINK does not
behave
as a Wifi card from Intel or from Realtek .

Maybee you need a

# touch /reconfigure
# init 6

here to regenerate the /etc/path_to_instlist of devices
Check /etc/patch_to_inst before and after and verify that it has changed,
and that the BGE is visible

at this point verify that /dev/bge0exists in the device tree.
when it does you sholud be able to do

# ifconfig bge0 plumb 192.168.0.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255
up

which is the manual way to get the lan working . it eliminates the need for a
working
DCHP set up, to test that the NIC card actually plays ball.

>then run sys-unconfig, re-filled

Which means tthat the BGE is not visible or recognised.

for Solaris to do DHCP requests you need an empty file
  /etc/bge0.dhcp

ZFS does turn on the ON-DISK write Cache when you give the whole drive
to the ZPOOL ( c5d0 & c7d0 are whole drives )

This ofcourse means that writes to the pool is faster ,
Do you believe that the on-disk caches have any issues on your hardware
 ?

If You give ZFS a Partition on the disk it wont turn on the write cache.

say you restore the the partition table with fdisk(1m) and then format(1m)
and finally give ZFS partition c5d0s0 and c7d0s0
you will have a slower ZFS without write cache.

if thats stable you have found the problem :-(

Please install the package for SPARC

# cd

pop2stream tcp nowait root/opt/sfw/sbin/ipop2d ipop2d
pop3stream tcp nowait root/opt/sfw/sbin/ipop3d ipop3d

well it ain't exactly on page one ...

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2379/hbsparcboot-50162?l=en&a=view

You need to press [BREAK] into the boot prom on a non SUN keyboard.
Then you can type

setenv auto-boot? false

and the prom will stop trying to autoboot.

then you can try to boot from the CDROM/DVD , if its a Sunblade 100
the unit is most likely a CDROM so it wont boot from a DVD media.
You can download the CDROM media from here

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/

Install process is also documented here

Yes , Veritas and Solaris Volume manager and ZFSis software RAID 0/1/5

LSI and Mylex is not software Raid.

Nvidia and ATI is someplace in between. It has a hardware component but

It's Possible . we do it all the time with Hardware RAID. LIke LSI
Logic 1064 controllers.
or the Mylex raid controllers.

Its the Phony RAID present in Consumer MOtherboards which usually
need a software
assist from a driver within the Operating system that is unusable since
most of time
only MS Windows drivers are available for the RAID'let

These sneaky RAID things sits in chipsets on the motherboard like
Nvidia Nforce or
the ATI thing you have whitout their own processors , so they need to have
Assist from
the Main Processor on the board. A Real RAID controller comes with its own
CPU.

Re: [osol-help] Advantages to Multiple Network Ports

2008-07-05 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi,

Its difficult to see a real reason to do this.
   If you load100Mbit * 4 = 400 MBit/s on the SB1000it probably
runs out of CPU power and disk I/O unless you have
2* 1200 Mhz CPUs and A DiskArray attached to it.

then again what is the speed of the internet Access line ?

From a security viewpoint you are quadrupling the Attack area on the
system .

Routing will be a nightmare. You need to put all the I/F in different
Broadcast domain's
if the return traffic is to take the network path of the "query"

So , no its a nice idea but if you need more bandwith get a gigabit NIC.

Hi,

Umm, You dont need hardware RAID on OpenSolaris as You have ZFS.
Probably you have some other OS on the PC that use the RAID.
If not you can disconnect the RAID and attach the drives to SATA ports or
whatever
you have on that motherboard.

After you have installed Solaris you can set up a ZFS diskpool and Z-RAID
the drives.

Try with updating /etc/driver_aliases with the PCI-ID for the card

The BGE driver is documented to work with 5751 in the man page for

so I would try to add this Motherboards PCI-ID to the list of BGE chipsets

You find the PCI ID with either

  /usr/bin/prtconf -v

Re: [osol-help] OpenSolaris install loses Solaris 10

2008-06-30 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi

If you have managed to install OpenSolaris in another BIOS partition of
your PC
You need to select the correct BIOS partition where Solaris 10 lives as the
Active partition when booting.

This is usually achived by editing the GRUB menu in /boot/grub/menu.lst
and supplying the correct parameters , instructiions in the file , to boot
the
  alternative partition.

the /dev/rdsk/cXdXsXsyntax only gives access to disk SLICES within
the Active
   BIOS partition.

Another way of doing this is to install the FreeBSD bootloader onto the
MBR of the
disk which lets you select at boot time which Partition too set Active and
boot.

2008-06-29 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi,

Solaris has the "Role Based Access Control " ( RBAC ) system for
allowing users access to admin
functions , base on the role the user is assigned.

there is four (4) shell-level commands that can be used to run commands
with the elevated access
permission.

   pfexec pfsh pfcshpfksh

The standard shell's does not act upon the RBAC profile in /etc/user_attr

You can also make additional Role-accountssimilar to the root- role
in OpenSolaris.
Create a role-account "netadm" give this account the
"network-management" profile
and assign the role to the intended useraccounts so that they can "su" to
the "netadm" role.

2008-06-28 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi,

The number of usable NIC's is higer on OpenSolaris than on Solaris 10.
Solaris 10 comes with supportcontracts and problems are solved with
patches
you apply which is great in production environments.

OpenSolaris is always ( as yet )development snapshots of the codebase
at a given point in time.
There is no patches. Solving a problem is done by Upgrading or Reinstalling
 a later Development
snapshot , which is called a Build level .

Will this solve you present problem with the NIC ?

   Maybe but probably not.

The NUmber of interesting combination's of networking chips on
motherboards
out of Taiwan is a marvel to behold.

Its probably less frustrating to get hold of a few of these and move them to
the PC
one uses for the time being.

the driver_alises file is a list of known NICS , It is not a list over

use

# prtconf -vfor the verbose list of PCI devices on your system.

No you need to start with finding Driver for you network card .

Or inputting the correct PCI identifiers for you NIC into
/etc/driver_aliases and then perform

Well unfortunately the implementataion of ethernet Hardware varies too
widely.
And even if Solaris 10 5/08 is supposed to support 8168 chipset GiGaByte may
have done
some thing to it like using a different PHY chip that the driver cant
initialise.

how did you edit the driver_ aliases file ?

did you use the correct PCI bus identifier ?
PCI10ec is for the old sstyle PCI bus ( 10ec is the RealTek
identifier )

PCIex10ec is for the new style PCI-Express BUS. which type NIC is it ?
 PCI or PCI Express ?

Maybe you should try Murayama San'sGANI driver instead item 15 on the
driver list below.

The Solaris typical install senario hides several of the choises
you need to make in the install process.

From this Manual close to the end of the page:

15. Select the type of installation you want to perform. Click Next.

Select Default Install to install the Entire Solaris Software Group.
Select Custom Install if you want to perform the following tasks.

Install a specific software group
Install additional software
Install specific software packages
Install a specific locale
Customize the disk layout

Hi,

When you Install S10 you select language twice . First you select which
language the installer
is supposed to use. then later on you are able to select from a long
list/menu which languages
you want supported in your installation. ( us-english is always installed )
. If you dont select any
further languages, the language CD is never called for during the install
process.

When I select "swedish" as an additional language the Language CD is
requested later on
after the 4 main CD's are installed and only the "swedish" extensions
are installed from

Re-Write the install script ?

Make SUN rewrite the install script ?

Dont use OpenSolaris 2008.05 for now, use SXCE Build 91 instead
were showrev exists and works ?

No doubt this will happen alot from now on. Install procedures that are
dependent on the old Packaging/Patching system .
They will need to be rewritten.

Re: [osol-help] The problem of checking the whole hard drive

2008-06-21 Thread Lars Tunkrans
Hi

If the df -h list is complete it looks as if you have allocated some 6.5
GB in total to solaris.
The rest of the Disk drives capacity is probably in another PC BIOS
Hardware partition.
To list the hardware partitions you can use the command " fdisk"

your physical disk device is probably /dev/rdsk/c0d0p0, look in
/dev/rdsk to find out !

fdisk output should look similar to :

# fdisk /dev/rdsk/c0d0p0

Total disk size is 18241 cylinders
Cylinder size is 16065 (512 byte) blocks

   Cylinders
  Partition StatusType Start End Length%
  =   ==  =   ===   ==   ===
  1 ActiveSolaris2 1 1822818228100

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
   1. Create a partition
   2. Specify the active partition
   3. Delete a partition
   4. Change between Solaris and Solaris2 Partition IDs
   5. Exit (update disk configuration and exit)
   6. Cancel (exit without updating disk configuration)
Enter Selection:

--

You probably have more than one partition here which prevents solaris
from allocating the diskspace in the installtion phase.

So basically i belive you need to delete ALL the partitions , with option
3 .
and then choose option 5 to exit .

As you are Not useing OpenSolaris 2008.05 the installer in SXCE och
Solaris 10 is capable of creating a new Solaris partitoin covering the whole
disk the next time you install , which you will have to do.

Another alternative is to use Partition magic or Gparted live cd to fix the
partition table
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Re: [osol-help] Does this look like a bad drive to anyone?

2008-06-20 Thread Lars Tunkrans
It should probably say

Error for Command: read Error Level: Fatal

If there was a hard error.
However its likely that there will be a hard error in the not to distant
future.
NOW is the time to backup the data .

And then get hold of whatever Low-Level formatter the disk vendor provides
and
run a LOW-Level test and reallocate the bad block.

just substitute rtls0 for nge0 that I use.

# dladm show-linkprop -p duplex nge0

# dladm show-linkprop -p flowctrl nge0

Your problem is probably a marginal Cable.
 I had a 45 feet ( 15 meter ) cable ( cat5 ) that I had to change because
it did
not work reliably at 100 Mbit

Unix timezones are for some historic reason written with reversed polarity.
Timezones to the west of Greenwhich are Positive . Timezones to east of
Greenwich
are Negative.

Probably the inventors of Unix could not imagine that New Jersey would
be located in " EST-5 " which would be more logical . When the clock is 12
noon
in London 12-5 = 7its 7am in New Jersey.

GMT+5:30is haftway between NewYork and Kansas City . Its suppoesed to
be eleven
hours from Calcutta . Anyway this timezone does not exist . you have
EST5and CST6 and MST7 and PST8

Calcutta is GMT-5:30 which is India Standard Time IST

Most likely you need to install the SUNWhea package with the package

The NetWork AutoMagic ( NWAM) function is supposed to switch between
Wireless and Wired interfaces . You are experiencing that NWAM is shutting
down your wired interface because it
somehow interprets the situation as if it has become offline.

So can you tell us more about the wired interface. ?

Is it connected to a HUB ? switch ? SOHO Router ?

Is the speed / full /half duplex fixed or negotiable ?

Which speed are you running at 10 Mbit ? 100 Mbit ?

Do you have a Wireless interface in the computer ?

Does it work with another cat5 cable or preferably a cat5e cable ?

2008-06-11 Thread Lars Tunkrans
http://prngd.sourceforge.net/

I dont think this stuff came with solaris.
Some one has added it to the system to provide security enhancement.

Better ask the guy who installed it

You can always boot a solaris system with a -s argument
to boot the system in single usermode.

You do that on a SPARC SERVER in the by pressing keys [STOP] +[A]
immediatley before the servers starts to boot the kernel.

 then type

 > boot -s

on Intel Solaris 8 there is a messeage on screen while booting that says
someting to the context of " press key to change boot options "

So you press the key sequens and then type

-s

and contiinue.

After you have started in Singel user mode . give the root password
and
go in and investigate the problem.

yeah how wonderful ,a network GUI with a mind of its own :-)
This must be a BUG. I will clearly have to test this GUI.
So if it dosent work, forget it.

Edit the file/etc/netmasks

# route add net default {router-ip-address} 1

should work .

editing/creating the file /etc/defaultrouter

and writing the router IP address on a single , and only, line in this file
 should also work
after a reboot.

Then you need to fix the DNS setup.

/etc/nsswitch.conf needs the entires

-
hostsfiledns
ipnodes file dns

the file /etc/resolv.conf needs to contain the Resolver
configuration
including IP numbers for the DNS servers.

/etc/resolv.conf
