Re: [osol-help] Audio Installation Help Needed

2008-01-07 Thread Rodney Young
 Try this:

 pkgrm SUNWaudd

 then a reboot.

I tried this, and now the osstest works. But now the volume control applet is
turned off and when I click on it, I get an error:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

And I cannot play audio via the installed media players.

Re: [osol-help] Audio Installation Help Needed

2008-01-05 Thread Rodney Young
With me being new to this, something got messed up so I reinstalled the OS. I
then installed OSS without the soundcard. When I did the osstest program this
is what I got:

Sound subsystem and version: OSS 4.0
(b1012/200801051101) (0x00040003)
Platform: SunOS/i86pc 5.11 snv_70b

*** Scanning sound adapter #-1 ***
/dev/oss/ich0/pcm0 (audio engine 0): Nvidia nForce
Note! Device is in use (by PID 0/SADA) but will try
anyway
- Performing audio playback test...
/dev/oss/ich0/pcm0: Device busy
The device is busy. There is some other application
using it.
Can't open the device

*** Some errors were detected during the tests ***

But when I put in an audio CD, it played!!! And I can adjust the volume by
clicking on the volume applet and adjusting the slider.

The Interrupt Mode is set for APIC in the BIOS.

Thanks for your help.

I want to know how to configure my computer so that I can take full advantage

I really would like to just use the audio that is on the MB if all possible.
(Same goes for the video, but that is the next step.)

 audio810 10de,1b0

Someone elsewhere mentioned to do:
first remove oss (pkgrm oss)
# devfsadm -C
# update_drv -a -i 'pci10de,1b0' audio810

in the /etc/driver_aliases file it shows as:
audio810 pci10de,1b0

but I did get an error:
devfsadm: driver failed to attach: audio810
Warning: Driver (audio810) successfully added to system but failed to attach

Now I have installed the OSS4 drivers from
  opensound.com and I now have
sound!!! But I do have a strange situation. I have
  audio out of the MB
only when I have the AudioPCI 3000 (ES1370
 Chipset)
  plugged in. And
when I right click on the GNOME volume applet to
 get
  the Preferences,
  only one device is there.

Hmm, that is strange. Did you have the card installed
when you first put OSS onto the machine? Which device
 does the volume applet show?

Yes I did have the card in when I put OSS onto the machine, and the card is
what showed up on the volume applet.

Your are right about the RTL8139 being network, in my state of confussion I
thought it was audio.

Since I am really new to all of this, I do need help in understanding your
question:
Have you tried in GNOME to see what the volume applet shows ?

Thank you Andrew for the GNOME volume applet explanation.

a test for both audio devices and they pass. When I remove the

Re: [osol-help] Installation Help - Solaris Express CE

2007-12-28 Thread Rodney Young
At the start I see the following under the GNU GRUB:
Solaris Express Developer Edition
Solaris Express
Solaris Express Serial Console ttya
Solaris Express Serial Console ttyb (for lx50, v60x and v65x)

I select: Solaris Express Developer Edition

After a number of dots are display across the top of the screen I get the
following:

1. Solaris Interactive (default)
2. Apply driver updates
3. Single user shell

So I don't see the desktop console mode that you mentioned, unless you are
talking about the Serial Console ttya and ttyb modes...which I tried and things
stop after the number of dots are displayed across the screen.

I also downloaded another Developer Edition (sol-nv-b70b-x86-dvd) and I was
able to install it, but after the first reboot when I rebooted/restarted the
computer, it would start to boot then shut down the computer. This also
happened before, but I don't recall the details.

[osol-help] Installation Help - Solaris Express CE

2007-12-27 Thread Rodney Young
I am new to the Unix/Solaris world. I recently downloaded the Solaris Express
CE DVD (sol-nv-b78-x86-dvd.iso). I can install just Solaris Express, but I am
having trouble installing the the Solaris Express Developer Edition. After I
select language for the keyboard, then Solaris Interactive, I get a small gray
window with Window...Edit...Options (I think) across the top. Then it
disappears and I just have a blue screen, the mouse stops working and nothing
else happens. Any ideas on the problem? Thanks
