Re: [osol-help] newbie trying to install solarisexpress developer edition dual boot w/
I have a dimension E-521 and had no trouble installing solaris. Had to do a reinstall of windows with the disk dell provided with machine. You have to reallocate hd0 giving windows ntfs an appropriate amount and leaving the remaining boot partition blank note you can have up to 3 primary partitions. The windows cd has a partitioner at the beginning of the install, works great. Solaris will then take the remainder and slice it. Don't know much about doing it in logical partitions. thx Andrew that's just what I needed to know. I think I'm going to have to pay for a partition mgr since getting rid of the dell system resources is tricky since it's on sector 0 if I understand correctly. Sorry about the late response. I'm still recovering from the crash when i tried to install previously. Grrr, Dell, never again. lol. You can delete the Dell utilities partition, but note that if you phone up Dell looking for support and they ask you to run something from the utilities partition but you've deleted it, they are likely to refuse to go any further in helping you. Also, if your PC did not come with a Windows XP CD then your only copy of the XP install files will be in a hidden partition - possibly the utilities partition. Deleting the utilities partition may therefore clobber your only copy. If you are happy to go ahead and delete the Dell utility partition, then the easiest way is the use the Windows program Partition Magic. Unfortunately you need to pay for this! If you don't want to shell out money for a partition editor, download a Knoppix Live CD from knoppix.net . This is a Linux distribution on a Live CD. Boot the machine from this, then open a terminal window and type qtparted. This utility will allow you to delete the hidden Dell utility partition, and also resize your Windows partition to allow space for Solaris (since the Solaris installer doesn't have this ability). Once you get Solaris installed, it will install grub in the MBR on your hard disk and add an entry for Windows to the GRUB menu. Cheers Andrew. [osol-help] newbie trying to install solarisexpress developer edition dual boot w/ XP
I have read on other theads that Dell does something funky with their PCs like installing Dell utilitis on 0, which probably confuses Grub. I'm basically a Photoshop user trying to escape XP, but need it to run CS3. Anyway, my HD 0 had the boot sector corrupted during the install session when installing an old download of solaris 10. I'll have to check the version on that. Is their a fairly non-tech way around the Dell issue with my old dimension 5100 when using Solaris' version of grub on the express disk (just got it in the mail today). solaris 10 express developer edition 1/08 version This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
