How does your ifconfig and route -n look on the host? The network topolgy
in the dashboard is also very helpful to see the big picture what is going
on.

Although as far as I know, you need to have metadata imported to the

I cant ping or ssh in to the VMs from the controller or compute node.

[Openstack] instance dns issue

2013-05-17 Thread Paras pradhan
Hi,

My instances can ping the ips but not using dns. The resolv.conf gets
populated by the private instance network dns ip (10.0.0.2, from 10.0.0.0/24)
. I can ping the dns ip but dns resolv is not working. What might be the
issue?

I am on quantum and grizzly in 12.04 lts.

Thanks

So adding dnsmasq_dns_server= external DNS IP should populate the

I did that but still seeing the same ip on resolv.conf.

Doing quantum subnet-update sub1 --dns_nameservers 8.8.4.4 8.8.8.8 works.
BTW from horizon you can pass one dns also.

 Hi,

I reckon this is because dnsmasq is isolated in the dhcp namespace. You
 can use
DHCP to push out a specific nameserver:

 $ quantum subnet-update sub1 --dns_nameservers 8.8.4.4 8.8.8.8

I can't seem to figure out the syntax to pass just one (list=false is not
working). Or you could use Horizon instead. Anyway the DHCP agent should
 ensure
that it is pushed out to the instance's resolv.conf or whatever.

well, that depends on the used authentication scheme. If you are using
swauth and don't have thousands of users, this gist might help you:

 https://gist.github.com/cschwede/5559268

It reports the used bytes for every account and the total size. Please
note that the returned account list is not sorted.

On the other side you can simply monitor all of your disks, sum up all
used byte values and divide by the number of replicas (3).

You might also use account_quotas, which blocks further write requests
if the quota on an account is exceeded. It is especially useful for
 smaller private storage clusters.

I just remove `quantum-l3-agent' for the sake of simplicity (I don't want
it for now) and have enabled `enable_isolated_metadata = True' in
dhcp_agent.ini but, same result. Metadata doesn't work.

The CirrOS doesn't reach the metadata server. Also, within CirrOS, there
is no route to 169.254.0.0/16 network. Probably because its dhcp client
 isn't ready with option 121 ???

Also, the `Ubuntu Cloud Image' doesn't reach the metadata too, I'm seeing:

 20130423 15:13:05,687 util.py[WARNING]: '
 http://169.254.169.254/20090404/metadata/instanceid' failed [49/120s]:

And, I have a `Pre-Installed' Ubuntu template that I can boot and login,
it have the option 121 configured but, no route to 169.254.0.0/24network in
 my routing tables.

To try one more option, I just enable the `enable_metadata_network =
 True' but, doesn't work either.

Anyway, this isn't off-topic, because of enabling metadata without L3 on
a Single Flat, is on my TODO list to improve my document, the Ultimate
OpenStack Grizzly Guide, so, it is right on topic.

And I really appreciate your help! Now I have a much better direction to
 follow.

But, I still can't figure out how to put metadata to work. Too
 complicated...

One more question, at the dhcp_agent, there is a message:

The metadata service will only be activated when the subnet gateway_ip
 is None.

 What this means?

It means that I can't use `--gateway 10.33.14.1' when running the
 `quantum subnet-create' ?

 Tks!

Quantum's metadata solution for Grizzly can run either with or without
 the l3 agent.
When running within the l3 agent, packets directed to 169.254.169.254

agent as next hop and 169.254.0.0/16 as destination CIDR; the dhcp
agent will spawn a metadata proxy for each network. Once the packet reaches
the proxy, the procedure works as above. This should also explain why the
metadata agent does not depend on the l3 agent.

If you are deploying the l3 agent, but do not want to deploy the
metadata agent on the same host, the 'metadata access network' can be
considered. This option is enabled by setting enable_metadata_network on
the dhcp agent configuration file. When enabled, quantum networks whose
cidr is included in 169.254.0.0/16 will be regarded as 'metadata
networks', and will spawn a metadata proxy. The user can then connect such
network to any logical router through the quantum API; thus granting
metadata access to all the networks connected to such router.

I think the documentation for quantum metadata has not yet been merged
 in the admin guide.
I hope this clarifies the matter a little... although this thread has
gone a little bit off-topic. Can you consider submitting one or more
 questions to ask.openstack.org?

 Salvatore

Can you please check to see if the DHCP agent is running. If so is there
 anything in its log files?

 Thanks

Hi all

I am following this tutorial

Well, What I am trying to find is if an instance in nova is low in
resources, then another instance should be automatically created and
started.

Is this possible or any tools are out for this?

[Openstack] network question

2012-05-23 Thread Paras pradhan
Hi,

I am a bit confused about the networking of nova in flatdhp mode. Can
somebody share nova.conf and the output of ifconfig from controller
and compute nodes? Also the /etc/network/interface file if possible.

I can't access/ssh my instances using floating ips but I can acess
them using private ips from controller host but not from compute
nodes.

my setup

Mode: Flatdhp
node1: eth0: 192.168.122.24/24 , eth1: address 192.168.3.1/24
node2: eth0: 192.168.122.25/24, eth1: 192.168.3.2/24

node1 ifconfig: http://pastebin.com/TZNWLFN8
node2 ifconfig: http://pastebin.com/yu0Xc7gD

nova.conf: http://pastebin.com/Bgex6xm7

I am using this guide to setup
http://docs.openstack.org/essex/openstack-compute/starter/os-compute-starterguide-trunk.pdf

Thanks for the reply.

Another question :). To have multiple compute nodes (say 5), I can
either use vlan or FlatDHCP mode right?. Also, with FlatDHCP can I
have multiple tenants or I need to stick with VLAN to have multiple
tenants?

Thanks
Paras.

Yes it is possible to do everything over one interface, but it is probably
better to separate traffic out over multiple vlans if you can.  You could

the vms on their own vlan (or if you are using vlan mode as you say, then
each project will get its own vlan).

This is what I am tyring to acheive.  Install only one nic in both

 http://p.chmouel.com/ks

 usage is :

ks host user password #account == user here

 or

 ks host account:user password

(host can be a full URL if you start it with http or it will use as a
host and convert it to http://host:5000/v2.0/tokens)

it wil auth to keystone print the formatted json (or show the error if
there is a problem) and at the end will print the curl command to
 validate the token on object-storage.

hopefully this should be useful for someone else.

Interestingly (perhaps) I see nothing in the keystone.log file.  In fact, I
don't even see the keystone log file.  Keystone opens to log files named
'admin.log' and 'keystone_legacy_auth.log'.  Is this right?  Also, if I run
keystone interactively (keystone -v -d) then issue the glance command, I see
nothing in the keystone window. This doesn't seem right to me, but I'm just
 getting started with keystone integration.

Thanks in advance for any insight...

 Ross

You're going to want to grab a long-lived token

Out of curiosity , If somebody wants to implement openstack in their
production environment which package repository should they consider?
github, ubuntu, managedit or (any) others?

FWIW, I got horizon/keystone from devstack working on a separate host to my
Ubuntu ppa openstack host.  Couldn't get them on the one host due to python
libs getting installed to different locations.

I haven’t tested it to well but I think it will do it.

 ./stack –c horizon –a install –d $HOME/youropenstackplace (will install all
 of horizons dependencies also)

 ./stack –c horizon –a start –d $HOME/youropenstackplace (should start
horizon + dependencies, haven’t messed around with this yet, might need a
 little work)
