[Openstack] SAN and Fibrechannel with OpenStack

2012-05-16 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler

dear openstack godfathers;

I do plan to migrate from crappy vmware and some ibm based cloud stack
to openstack and kvm. here's the thing: I am lucky enough to have decent
hardware, all the compute nodes are interconnected via fibre channel.
so I don't want and don't need iscsi. do you think I can make it with
something like clvm? I read through the docs of openstack, but I am not
really sure now if I can make clvm fly without hacking around in
openstack (and nova-volume) too much, especially when it comes to live
migration and so on...

I realize OpenStack was not built for SAN and FC, but I would really
like to hear your opinions on that.

Thanks,

Wolfgang

Re: [Openstack] SAN and Fibrechannel with OpenStack

2012-05-22 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler

Thank you for your answer,

I am not saying that I need a clustered filesystem, with clvm I just
have all lvm-volumes available on all machines, but only one machine
would attach to the filesystem of a specific LV at a time.

I'm not sure that it would be particularly easy to make nova-volume
support clustered filesystems; the current model only supports
attaching a volume to a single instance at a time. Aside from that, it
shouldn't be too hard to use fc as the data path instead of iscsi.
We're looking at using iSER in a similar capacity.

Hi Wolfgang,

latest versions of our distro supports NFS as backend storage for
instances, volumes and images. Basically a zone shares the same NFS

it does not differ a lot from what you want to do with FC or iSCSI.

It's in our immediate roadmap to use FC and iSCSI instead of NFS, but
may be you can give a try to our NFS stuff until then ;-)

[Openstack] nova-network not writing into dnsmasq-config-file

2012-07-22 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
Hi openstack-guys,

using the latest essex release from ubuntu packages, I see a weird nova-network
behaviour (flat networking):

nova.conf:
--flat_interface=eth0
--flat_network_bridge=bridge_130
--flat_network_dhcp_start=192.168.32.130
--flat_injected=False

nova-network runs on a different host as nova-compute.
when I provision a VM, it all looks good (no errors in the logs), but the VM
doesn't get an IP address. I've tcpdumped and verfied that the dhcp request
reaches the correct interface of nova-network. now looking into dnsmasq I found
this in the syslog:

Jul 22 22:29:27 localhost dnsmasq-dhcp[3107]: read
/var/lib/nova/networks/nova-bridge_130.conf
Jul 22 22:29:50 localhost dnsmasq-dhcp[3107]: DHCPDISCOVER(bridge_130)
192.168.122.96 fa:16:3e:60:92:a6 no address available

bummer. so I checked to see why this happens, and it turns out, that
/var/lib/nova/networks/nova-bridge_130.conf is empty. I assume there should be
the mac to IP mapping, written by nova-network, but although the file exists,
it doesn't have content. nova-network doesn't complain about any issues with
this file, the file system permissions allow the nova-user to write there, so I
do not quite know how to handle this.

Any hints would be very welcome.

Thanks a lot

Re: [Openstack] Incremental Backup of Instances

2012-07-23 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
You could solve something like this with bacula incremental backups, I'm
doing this (but not with openstack) like this:
make an lvm snapshot (or qcow2 snapshot) of the instance, write a script
that mounts the filesystem and let bacula back it up (incrementally).
bacula can do the actual snapshotting and mounting, so you don't need to
coordinate when to create a snapshot and so on. this works very well,
but is hard to configure, too. to restore the machine, one creates a lv
in my case and restores the whole filesystem there. This works very well
for linux vms, might be harder with windows vms.

[Openstack] public-interface ignored

2012-07-24 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler

hi,

running openstack essex with vlan-networking:
--network_manager=nova.network.manager.VlanManager
--vlan_interface=bond0
--public_interface=bridge_130
--auto_assign_floating_ip=True

all works great except for floating ips. the problem is, that the
floating ips are assigned to eth0 instead of bridge_130. I can't get a
clue out of the logs:

2012-07-24 11:24:02 DEBUG nova.service [-] public_interface : bridge_130
from (pid=31192) wait /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/service.py:411

=> so during startup it realizes that bridge_130 is the
public-interface. great. But then the floating ip is assigned:

2012-07-24 11:24:26 DEBUG nova.utils [-] Running cmd (subprocess): sudo
nova-rootwrap ip addr add xx.xx.xx.129/32 dev eth0 from (pid=31192)
execute /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/utils.py:219

this process finishes without errors, the problem is that eth0 is just
not my public network interface. What's wrong? is there something in the
database that I should change?

[Openstack] snapshot-temp-directory

2012-08-13 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler

hello fellow openstack users,

I just tried to create a snapshot of a virtual machine, which was larger
than average. Bad news: The snapshot couldn't be saved, but what I see
here is some kind of design problem:

2012-08-13 13:44:41 DEBUG nova.utils

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/utils.py:219

that's bad, I don't have so much disk space on /, but I have plenty in
/var/lib/nova/instances.

df -h | grep nova
/dev/dm-8 1.4T 150G 1.3T 11% /var/lib/nova/instances

is there a generic way to change this path?

[Openstack] Compute Node Down!

2012-09-19 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
Hello Folks,

Although it seems a pretty straightforward scenario I have a hard time finding
documentation on this.
One of my compute nodes broke down. All the instances are on shared storage, so
no troubles here, but I don't know how to tell openstack that the VM should be
deployed on another compute node. I tried fiddling around in the mysql-db with
no success.
Any help is really appreciated.

2012-09-19 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
Thanks, that's what I ended up doing (by intuition rather than knowledge)
yesterday. I didn't know about nova rescue either.
I think this is a Big Big room for improvement here. In the best case this
should be discovered automatically and the switchover should be done without
human Intervention.

[Openstack] horizon: problems with upgrading to folsom

2012-10-22 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
dear openstack enthusiasts,

I've done it, I've upgraded to folsom. After a ton of troubles I've gone
through and struggling to find documentation on how to UPDATE to folsom
instead of installing from scratch I'm in a state where horizon is
working again - well, almost.
Before anybody asks: yes, I've issued *nova-manage db sync*.

The instances list in horizon shows all the instances of a tenant
including private and public ip addresses. But when I click on 'Access &
Security' I don't see any floating ip's. Clicking 'allocate ip to
project' brings up: 'no floating ip pools available.

doing the same on the command-line:
nova-manage floating list | head
7edc3284f53f4e02b92d498db41b842d19x.x.x.129

835e8fcba1334fb6b9421e51638ec10619x.x.x.131 Nonenova
bridge_130

seems to bring up the latest and greatest results. Hm. What's wrong?
Help would be appreciated!

[Openstack] folsom nova-compute error on snapshotted images?

2012-10-22 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
hello again,

after upgrading to folsom nova-compute dies the fabulous death while
gaining information from qemu-images.

the information-gaining process works for some images, and then we reach
the image instance-005c, which also has a snapshot associated with it.

let's see the difference:
regular image file:

qemu-img info instance-005d/disk
image: instance-005d/disk
file format: qcow2
virtual size: 4.0G (4294967296 bytes)
disk size: 3.0G
cluster_size: 2097152
backing file:
/var/lib/nova/instances/_base/cd906f63b4de02c79d87a328c79f3a988059e51a_4
(actual path:
/var/lib/nova/instances/_base/cd906f63b4de02c79d87a328c79f3a988059e51a_4)

and now an image with a snapshot:

computeNode1:/var/lib/nova/instances# qemu-img info instance-005c/disk
image: instance-005c/disk
file format: qcow2
virtual size: 2.0G (2147483648 bytes)
disk size: 1.8G
cluster_size: 2097152
backing file:
/var/lib/nova/instances/_base/cd906f63b4de02c79d87a328c79f3a988059e51a_2
(actual path:
/var/lib/nova/instances/_base/cd906f63b4de02c79d87a328c79f3a988059e51a_2)
Snapshot list:
IDTAG VM SIZEDATE VM CLOCK

00:00:00.000

the image with the snapshot kills nova-compute as we can see here:
http://pastie.org/5098216

help is appreciated. I wonder if it was wise to upgrade to folsom...

[Openstack] snapshots not working in folsom

2012-11-20 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
hi,

after I've upgraded to folsom snapshotting just stopped working. Horizon
doesn't complain, the log doesn't complain, but the snapshot is
reportedly not taken (snapshot file isn't created, and I don't see the
process of qemu creating it).

as I said, nova-compute on the server doesn't complain:

Running cmd (subprocess): sudo nova-rootwrap /etc/nova/rootwrap.conf
qemu-img snapshot -c fd5ab4d51e12435884c8a90f190f1f15
/var/lib/nova/instances/instance-00f3/disk from (pid=13330) execute
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/utils.py:176
Result was 0 from (pid=13330) execute
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/utils.py:191
Running cmd (subprocess): qemu-img convert -f qcow2 -O raw -s
fd5ab4d51e12435884c8a90f190f1f15
/var/lib/nova/instances/instance-00f3/disk
/var/lib/nova/instances/snapshots/tmpclLTZA/fd5ab4d51e12435884c8a90f190f1f15
from (pid=13330) execute /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/utils.py:176

any hints or suggestions? Our customers really want this feature.

Re: [Openstack] Ceph + Nova

2012-11-21 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
Not being a nova expert, and not using ceph with nova, I can tell you
that I've been testing ceph extensively and it seems to be like 'the
thing made for nova'. it seems stable, it is reasonable fast and the
features are unbeaten. but I wouldn't use it for hosting qemu-images in
/var/lib/nova/instances, glusterfs would be better suited in that
respect. I've tested it as a block device fully integrated into libvirt.

give it a try!

[Openstack] nova ceph integration

2013-01-30 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. My question is: can I integrate ceph
into openstack's nova & cinder in a way, that I don't need
/var/lib/nova/instances anymore? I'd like to have EVERYTHING in ceph, starting
from glance images to nova-disk-images and volumes (cinder). And more
important: Can this be done in a way so that my horizon-users can still use
horizon (including snapshotting) without the need of abusing the command-line?
:)
I've read that cinder and glance are supported, but I didn't find much
information on nova-disk-images and ceph.

thanks for a reply

tweaks of the policy.json-file it's possible that the admin-user sees
all tenants, but he doesn't get the 'admin' tab in horizon.

Re: [Openstack] Can not create snapshot

2013-03-04 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler
For anybody running into the same troubles:

HTTPOverlimit basically meant that glance didn't have enough free space
on it's drive (could have thought about that, but I didn't realice that
glance was meant).

And:
http://docs.openstack.org/folsom/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/configure-glance-files.html

this helped a lot.
