 Hello John!
Our work is focusing on "What to monitor" for Infrastructure Monitoring of
Swift.
We have categorized Monitoring of Swift Infrastructure in four aspects and
provide checklist of parameters that need to be monitored for each aspect.
We would like to contribute our work in OpenStack community.

We have also performed the work on the same lines for OpenStack Nova.
We would appreciate if we can know if our work is relevant for contribution.

[Openstack] information provided by swift-recon command for object expirer

2014-04-21 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

I have a basic question about the object expirer information given by recon
middleware.

AS we run swift-recon command for object expirer, it gives following results:

root@swift-Virtualbox:~# swift-recon object --expirer

--> Starting reconnaissance on 4 hosts

[2014-03-05 10:49:20] checking on expirers
[object_expiration_pass] low: 0, high: 0, avg: 0.0, total: 0, Failed: 75.0%,
no_result: 3, reported: 1
[expired_last_pass] low: 1, high: 1, avg: 1.0, total: 1, Failed: 75.0%,
no_result: 3, reported: 1

my question is:

What do "object_expiration_pass" and "expired_last_pass" mean?
What information do these attributes provide for object expirer ?

Thanks

[Openstack] information provided by swift-recon command for object updater

2014-04-21 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

I have a basic question about the object and container updater information
given by recon middleware.

AS we run swift-recon command for object updater, it gives following results:

root@swift-Virtualbox:~# swift-recon object --updater

--> Starting reconnaissance on 4 hosts

[2014-03-05 10:49:20] checking updater times
[updater_last_sweep] low: 0, high: 0, avg: 0.1, total: 0, Failed: 0.0%,
no_result: 0, reported: 4

my question is:

What does "updater_last_sweep" mean?
What information does this attribute provide for object updater ?

Thanks

Re: [Openstack] swift recon query

2014-03-11 Thread pragya jain
Hi Gerry,

Object server is using port 6010 rather than 6000
I use the curl command
curl -i http://127.0.0.1:6010/recon/mounted

Now it is working.

Very thankful for your help.

Thanks again

Re: [Openstack] swift recon query

2014-03-10 Thread pragya jain
Thanks Drudy Gerry for answering my queries.

But when I use curl command for recon, I get the following results:

root@swift-VirtualBox:~# curl -i http://127.0.0.1:6000/recon/mounted
curl: (7) couldn't connect to host

I don't understand where is the problem. Please help.

Thanks

[Openstack] difference between metrics to statsd and metrics provided by swift recon middleware

2014-03-10 Thread pragya jain
hello all,
according to the documents, statsd server collects the following metrics about
account-auditor:
Metric Name Description account-auditor.errors Count of audit runs (across all
account databases) which caught an Exception. account-auditor.passes Count of
individual account databases which passed audit. account-auditor.failures Count
of individual account databases which failed audit. account-auditor.timing
Timing data for individual account database audits.
and, swift recon middleware provides following information about
account-auditor:  account_auditor_pass_completed  account_audits_passed 
account_audits_failed  account_audits_since
please somebody help me to understand what is the similarity and what is the
difference between the metrics collected by statsd server and metrics provided
by swift recon middleware.
Thanks

Re: [Openstack] swift recon query

2014-03-06 Thread pragya jain
Hello Steve,

My questions about swift recon are:

Q1: what should be the curl command for recon?

Q2. what arguments should I use with 'swift-recon' command to get the status
about
                   (i)      /proc/meminfo,
                   (ii)    currently mounted file systems
                   (iii)    list of devices

Q3. When I run swift-recon command, It respond in terms of low: <> high: <>
avg: <> total: <> failed: <> no_result: <>
For example,

root@swift-VirtualBox:~# swift-recon
account --auditor
===
--> Starting reconnaissance on 4
hosts
===
[2014-02-12 15:05:20] Checking auditor
stats
[account_auditor_pass_completed] low:
0, high: 0, avg: 0.0, total: 0, Failed: 0.0%, no_result: 0, reported:
1
[account_audits_passed] - No hosts
returned valid data.
[account_audits_failed] - No hosts
returned valid data.
[account_audits_since] - No hosts
returned valid data.

What is the meaning of following terms: low, high, avg, total, failed,
no_result, and reported ?

Thanks
Pragya Jain

[Openstack] query about Statsd

2014-03-06 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

I have some questions about Statsd server for openstack swift

Q1:  Is swift-informant middleware necessary to be included in
proxy-server.conf in order to provide metrics to StatsD server?

Q2: what type of metrics does swift-informant middleware provide to StatsD
server?

Q3:  What is StatsDlog? Is it a middleware or a daemon or something other? And,
What type of metrics does it provide to StatsD server?

I had searched many documents, but I still have confusion about it.
Please somebody answer my questions.

Thanks

[Openstack] swift recon query

2014-03-05 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

I have some basic questions about swift recon. please query them.

Q1: what should be the curl command for recon?

I use the following commands:
1.  root@swift-VirtualBox:~# curl -i http://127.0.0.1:8080/recon/async

HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
Content-Length: 131
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Www-Authenticate: Swift realm="async"
X-Trans-Id: txe8c8850fc0a74ae095faa-005316e3a5
Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2014 08:43:17 GMT

UnauthorizedThis server could not verify that you are
authorized to access the document you requested.

2.  root@swift-VirtualBox:~# curl -i
http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1/AUTH_prag2648/recon/async

HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
Content-Length: 131
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Www-Authenticate: Swift realm="AUTH_prag2648"
X-Trans-Id: tx978f787ce01f446a9beeb-005316e424
Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2014 08:45:24 GMT

UnauthorizedThis server could not verify that you are
authorized to access the document you requested.

Q2. Does 'swift-recon' command not provide the status about

   (i)  /proc/meminfo,

   (ii) currently mounted file systems
   (iii)    list of devices
if 'swift-recon' provides these informations, then what should be the
command?

Q3. It stands for what?
    low
    high
    avg
    total
    failed
    no_result
    reported

Re: [Openstack] problem in log in django swiftbrowser

2014-03-03 Thread pragya jain
hi Christian,

I did the following steps:
1. root@pragya-VirtualBox:~/django-swiftbrowser/myproj# python manage.py
collectstatic

OUTPUT:
You have requested to collect static files at the destination
location as specified in your settings:

    /var/www/myproj/static

This will overwrite existing files!
Are you sure you want to do this?

Type 'yes' to continue, or 'no' to cancel: yes

0 static files copied to '/var/www/myproj/static', 9 unmodified.

2. root@pragya-VirtualBox:~/django-swiftbrowser/myproj# python manage.py
runserver --insecure

[Openstack] problem in installing zenoss zenpack for openstack swift to monitor my swift environment

2014-03-02 Thread pragya jain
Hello all,

I have a running swift environment on Ubuntu 12.04 desktop VM.

In order to monitor it, I want to install zenoss zenpack for openstack swift.
For this purpose, first I try to install Zenoss core 4.2.4 on the VM
I follow the following steps as root:
1. wget --no-check-certificate
https://github.com/zenoss/core-autodeploy/tarball/4.2.4 -O auto.tar.gz 2. tar
xvf auto.tar.gz 3. cd zenoss-core-autodeploy-*
4. ./core-autodeploy.sh

but I get the error:

./core-autodeploy.sh: line 44: rpm: command not found
Unable to determine version. I can't continue

Please help me to resolve this error.
My main purpose is to install and run zenoss zenpack for openstack swift to
monitor my swift environment.

Please help regarding this

Re: [Openstack] horizon for swift

2014-02-10 Thread pragya jain
hello Adam,

I can't understand the means of 'can install the integral front-end'.

I had seen swiftstack. It provides a very good interface and call it software
defined storage.
But I want some interface other than swiftstack

[Openstack] how to use cloudberry Explorer and cyberduck user interface for swift

2014-02-09 Thread pragya jain
hi all,

cloudberry Explorer and cyberduck, both, provide user interface for accessing
openstack swift. Both of them are windows or Mac OS compatible, not supported
by linux.
I installed swift on my windows machine by creating a VM of ubuntu desktop.
Now I want to use these products (cloudberry Explorer or cyberduck) for a user
interface for swift.
I download and install both of them on my host machine (windows based) and i am
unable to understand how to use these products to access swift.

Please somebody help me in this regard.

thanks for reply.

I had installed swift on a VM using the link

Is there not something through which I can integrate horizon with existing

[Openstack] horizon for swift

2014-02-08 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

I had installed openstack swift on my laptop by creating a VM of Ubuntu 12.04
desktop using the link
http://docs.openstack.org/developer/swift/development_saio.html

it provides a CLI for using swift.
I want a dashboard so that I can access swift functionality by 'click& go', not
by writting the commands.
for this purpose, I want to install openstack horizon and integrate it with
existing swift environment.
What should I do for the same?

Please help in this regard

Re: [Openstack] storage virtualization

thanks for reply Cedric

what does swift do for adding more devices as storage node?
how does swift abstract storage from the devices?
And how swift recognise whether there is free space on a particular storage
node to store data?

As of my comprehension and the way you ask, swift didn't "virtualize" the

times/check summed ect ...). Of course the objects are not stored "as is", like
on a simple file server.

Re: [Openstack] storage virtualization

2014-02-02 Thread pragya jain
I am not talking about cinder.
My question is:
Openstack swift provides storage as a service to the user so that user can
store their data offline.
when a user store some data on swift using Object PUT command, data is stored
as an object at some storage node.
1. What is this storage node - Is it a physical hard disk?
2. to store the data, Is swift virtualize the physical storage or directly
store the data on physical disk?
3. Is there any need of storage virtualization in swift?

Thanks

[Openstack] openstack swift object put request

2014-02-01 Thread pragya jain
hi all,

somebody help me to understand the following lines of code of
ObjectController.PUT() in swift.proxy.controllers.obj.py

def PUT(self, req):
"""HTTP PUT request handler."""
---
# do a HEAD request for container sync and checking object versions

if 'x-timestamp' in req.headers or \
(object_versions and not
 req.environ.get('swift_versioned_copy')):
hreq = Request.blank(req.path_info, headers={'X-Newest': 'True'},
 environ={'REQUEST_METHOD': 'HEAD'})
hresp = self.GETorHEAD_base(
hreq, _('Object'), self.app.object_ring, partition,
hreq.swift_entity_path)
---

in the following lines of code, self.GETorHEAD_base() create an HTTPConnection
to object server for a HEAD request which is defined in ObjectController.HEAD()
of swift.obj.server.py

But we are in process of putting object, object is not written till yet on the
node, then what will it return to hresp?

thanks

[Openstack] how the replicator in swift replicate a good copy

[Openstack] what is the concept of partition space in swift

2013-12-24 Thread pragya jain
as said in many documents, Partition is a collection of stored data
account databases, container databases and objects

My question is:

 - one partition space is responsible for storing anyone of three- account
databases, container databases and objects.
Or, one partition space contains all of the three?
 - where do these partition space reside? Whether they reside on the ring or on
the storage node?

Please help me to make it clear.

[Openstack] can I create account using swift CLI

2013-12-24 Thread pragya jain
I installed swift on my laptop by creating a virtual machine of ubuntu 12.04
LTS desktop using the document
http://docs.openstack.org/developer/swift/development_saio.html

I am using swift CLI for working with swift

For adding an account in Swift, I first modify /etc/swift/proxy-server.conf and
add italic line in it.

[filter:tempauth]
use = egg:swift#tempauth
user_admin_admin = admin .admin .reseller_admin
user_test_tester = testing .admin
user_test2_tester2 = testing2 .admin
user_test_tester3 = testing3
*user_prag2648_pragya = pj2648 .admin .reseller_admin*

and, then restart proxy

My question is:
Can I create account using swift CLI?
If yes, then how?
If no, then Is there any other way to create an account?

Thanks

[Openstack] how to integrate horizon with swift

2013-12-24 Thread pragya jain
I installed swift on my laptop by creating a virtual machine of ubuntu 12.04
LTS desktop using the document
http://docs.openstack.org/developer/swift/development_saio.html
It provides CLI interface for working with swift.
I need a GUI interface for the same.
For this purpose, I want to integrate Horizon with it.
Does it solve my purpose of GUI interface?
And, what commands should I follow to integrate horizon with swift?

[Openstack] Which functions are invoked in swift source code

2013-10-07 Thread pragya jain
hello all,

when we give the command
$ sudo swift-init accoount-auditor start

__init__ functions defined in the class AccountAuditor in
swift/account/auditor.py is invoked.

But, I don't understand
1. How does the control go to run_forever() or run_once() function defined in
the same class?
2. Who will decide whether to run run_forever() function or run_once() function?

Please help me in this regard

[Openstack] problem in understanding account reaper, auditor and replicator code in swift source code

2013-10-04 Thread pragya jain
Hello,

I am studying swift source code.

My problem is:

When we start swift, and start swift account processes by giving the command:
$ sudo swift-init accoount-reaper start
$ sudo swift-init accoount-auditor start
$ sudo swift-init accoount-replicator start

which functions are invoked in swift sourcecode?
Are they the __init__ functions defined in the class AccountReaper in
swift/account/reaper.py, class AccountAuditor in swift/account/auditor.py and
class AccountReplicator in swift/account/replicator.py respectively

Please help me in this regard.___

Thanks Zhang for the reply.
but my question is:
According to swift source code,
through which function call, the proxy server interact with account server, i.e., flow of control go from proxy server code to account server code?

Thanks again

[Openstack] problem in understanding interaction between swift proxy and other servers through swift source code

2013-09-24 Thread pragya jain
Hello,

I am studying swift source code.

My problem is:
1) What are the roles of class AccountController defined in swift / proxy /
controllers / account.py and class AccountController defined in swift / account
/ server.py
2) How these two classes differ from each other and
3) How these two class interact with each other i.e.
According to my understanding, when a user make a request, __call__() function
defined in Application class in swift / proxy /server.py is executed, which ,in
turn, calls handle_request() function which sends the control to the swift /
proxy / controllers

Now, I can't understand through which function call will the control go to
account server

[Openstack] problem in preparing and labeling the drives in order to mount them

2013-09-11 Thread pragya jain
I have to prepare and label the drives in order to mount them.
I run some commands to survey what's on the system:
root@arun-Aspire-5742:~# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda4 177866264 4164648 164666508 3% / udev 2918600 4 2918596 1% /dev tmpfs

root@arun-Aspire-5742:~# cat /proc/mounts rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0 sysfs /sys

root@arun-Aspire-5742:~# sudo mkfs.xfs -L d1 /dev/sda2 mkfs.xfs: /dev/sda2
appears to contain an existing filesystem (ntfs).
mkfs.xfs: Use the -f option to force overwrite.
Now, my problem is: I don't understand which device should I label as "d1"? how
many devices should I label as "d1", "d2" etc.?
Please help me in this regard.___
