Hi Freezer team!

I prepared a short demo of recently implemented Freezer features.

This is a brief overview of features our Mirantis team took part in – rsync
engine, backup to local/remote host and Nova tenant backup.

[openstack-dev] [freezer] Freezer PTL Non-candidacy

2017-01-19 Thread Mathieu, Pierre-Arthur
Hello everyone,

As I already announced during our IRC meeting, I'm not planning to run for the
Pike PTL position.

Having held this role for two cycle now and I think it is time for someone else
to step in. I'll continue to contribute as a core-team member and will be
available to help the new PTL when needed.

I would like to say a BIG thanks to all the contributors as well as the core
team.
This year, we have seen the completion of big features as well as the addition
of many new contributors and a few new companies to the project. This makes me
very optimistic about Freezer's future.

This past year was a very rewarding experience for me and this is mainly thanks
to all of you.

Thanks,
Pierre

[openstack-dev] [freezer] Freezer mascot draft

before the Project Team Gathering in February. Before they make our logo
final, they want to be sure we're happy with our mascot.

We can discuss any concerns in Barcelona and you can also provide direct
feedback to the designers: http://tinyurl.com/OSmascot   Logo feedback is due
Friday, Nov. 11. To get a sense of how ours stacks up to others, check out

[openstack-dev] [freezer] Freezer midcycle minutes

2016-07-26 Thread Mathieu, Pierre-Arthur
Hello everyone,

The freezer team recently had his mid-cycle meeting hosted in Galway.

Please head over to this etherpad ([1]) know everything about it.

Here is a short recap of the topics that we discussed:
- Update on documentation [2]
Guillermo already did a great job. The new documentation needs to be
released and we discussed how and where this will be done.
We also discussed the developper documentation
- Update on python-freezerclient [3]
We are ready. The only thing missing is to release python-freezer-client.
- Falcon and Paste and PasteDeploy
We need to figure out how to build middlewares that are compatible with
falcon and paste. If this will not work in the long run, maybe we will have
to move to a different api framework.
- Update on freezer-agent refactoring [4]
- Backup as a Service [5]
Required:
  - freezer-web-ui fixes / tests
  - Retention for openstack based backup (nova, cinder, cindernative)
  - oslo.policy
  - freezer-scheduler running multiple jobs in parallel
- Nova / Cinder backups [6]
We need to update/merge a few bugfixes
- Core team review
- On-duty reviewers [7]
We are going to have two on-duty reviewers per week. They will try to focus
a bit more on doing reviews in order to speed up the process. This is not a
replacement for reviews asked to a specific developer (because of his
knowledge around a specific topic) or urgent reviews asked in the IRC
channel.
- Engines and tar [8]
Conclusions to be presented soon on the openstack-dev mailing list about
what we should do regarding tar and its broken incremental.
- Integration testing [9]
This is going the right way. We need to keep focussing on adding more tests.
We have a list of features and scenarios that needs to be added.

A big thanks to everyone that participated in this midcycle meetup!

Regards
- Pierre, for the Freezer Team

Re: [openstack-dev] Freezer - tmp_file issue

2016-07-21 Thread Mathieu, Pierre-Arthur
Hi Albert,

The mailing list is one place where you can report this kind of things.

You can also just pop up in the IRC room related to the corresponding project
(#openstack-freezer in our case), this is usualy the fastest way.

You can also create a bug in lauchpad (I did that for you:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/freezer/+bug/1605178).

Someone is going to patch this shortly.

Cheers,

- Pierre

PS: When interacting with OpenStack mailing lists, you need to add start the
subject of the email by [mailing-list-name][project-name]
([openstack-dev][freezer] in this case) so that readers can sort through the
big number of emails easily.

Subject: [openstack-dev] Freezer - tmp_file issue

Hi!

I’m rather new at this so let me know if this is the wrong place to ask for a
change. I was trying to run the Freezer code without the trickle executable
but with a configuration file. It wouldn’t run. So, I took a look and it
appears that if you do not have a trickle executable but you do have a config
file that it will add a tmp_file key to the backup_args dictionary. However,
if you don’t have a trickle executable, it will try to pop out tmp_file which
doesn’t exist and thus an exception is thrown and the program exits. Would it
be possible to have someone move the if backup_args.config: \
backup_args.__dict__[‘tmp_file’] = conf_file.name above and on the same indent
as the if trickle_executable and then move the part in the else statement if
backup_args.config to the same indent level as well? That should prevent it
from having a happy heart attack and exiting.

Thanks,

Al

[openstack-dev] [freezer] Newton Summit Freezer Sessions Recap

2016-05-12 Thread Mathieu, Pierre-Arthur
Hello everyone,

Here is the recap of what happened during the Newton Summit in Austin
concerning Freezer:

We had one presentation animated by Fausto Marzi (daemontool) and Fabrizio
Fresco (frescof) and as well as four developper sessions.

Overall, we have noticed a large attendance and a big interest from the
community.

We would like to thank anyone who attended one of our session!

Presentation: "From Backup/Restore aaS to a fully DR solution for OpenStack"
  Here is the video: [1]

Session 1 : "Backup your OpenStack infrastructure"
  Etherpad: [2]
With that session, we had the goal to gather as much feedback as possible
about what needs to be backed up in an OpenStack Infrastructure.
Main Features to implement in the future:
- Support of PosgreSQL backup
- Support of Elasticsearch backup
- Support of Ceph (at least cluster map) backup

Session 2 : "Backup/Restore as a Service"
  Etherpad: [3]
With that session, we had the goal to gather feedback on what freezer needs
to implement to be a better Backup/Restore as a Service solution.
We also wanted to start the discussion about scalability which lead to
talking about deduplication and block-baced incremental.
Main features to implement in the future:
   - Oslo policy (WIP)
   - Block-based incremental (WIP)
   - Agent deployment automation (Cloudinit, Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
   - Remote backup / agentless (Still under discussion)
   - UX improvment
   - Barbican integration to help with encryption key managment
   - Audit of backups
   - Mistral / Heat integration

Session 3 : "Disaster Recovery"
  Etherpad: [4]
During this session, we described again the plan we have to provide disaster
  recovery with freezer through freezer-dr.

Session 4: "Contributors meetup"
  Etherpad: [5]
During this session, we went back on some freezer basics before explaining
the freezer-agent refactoring that will happen during the Newton cycle.
We then had a conversation with Saggi Mizrahi about Smaug and its possible
  integration with Freezer.
We spoke about Ironic-agent based backups that could lead to an easy tripleO
  support.
Last topic was agentless backup which we want to plan during the cycle.

Also, we would like to welcome the team from Cloudbase! They are going to help
us with the microsoft side of the development.

Here is the high level roadmap / priority list for the Newton cycle:
  - Hardening, testing
  - Agent refactoring to add plugins layers
  - Documentation refactoring
  - Providing automation scripts
  - Integration with other projects (Heat, Barbican, Mistral, Smaug)
  - Deduplication and agentless planning
  - Disaster recovery kick-off

[openstack-dev] [freezer] Proposing Saad Zaher for freezer core

2016-04-14 Thread Mathieu, Pierre-Arthur
Hello,

I would like to propose that we make Saad Zaher (szaher) core on freezer.
He has been a highly valuable developper for the past few month, mainly working
on integrating oslo component into freezer.
He has also been helping a lot with feature testing.

His work can be found here: [1]

Unless there is a disagreement I plan to make Saad core by the end of the week.

Thanks
- Pierre
