[Openstack-operators] Ops Meetup Team

2017-04-25 Thread Melvin Hillsman
Hey everyone,

We have been having some great momentum since the Foundation enlisted a
small group of operators to manage the Midcycle and to form the Ops Meetup
Team. We have a few asks related to the teaml:

   1. More people! We need more folks to participate in the team meetings
   and activities; the more the merrier. You do not have to be an "operator";
   everyone is welcome!
   2. Themed midcycle. In an effort to continue to ensure the midcycle is
relevant, we would like feedback on if folks agree with the midcycle being
themed. Basically wherever the midcycle is being held, contact some folks
in the region and focus on content that is more relevant to the folks in
   the region.

More information on the team can be found on the wiki[1]. Meeting day and
time is Tuesdays @ 1500UTC in #openstack-operators. We will also have a
session[2] in Boston around the team, its purpose, and some items to make
decisions on; looking forward to seeing you all in Boston!

Hi All -

We have a Scientific WG IRC meeting at 0900 UTC in channel #openstack-meeting.
Everyone is welcome.

On this week’s agenda[1] everything is falling into place for Boston: Summit,
Forum, Congress and Social. Plus a few other nuggets from the week’s goings-on.

Best wishes,
Stig

[Openstack-operators] [nova] instance partition size discrepancy

2017-04-25 Thread Carlos Konstanski
I'm having an issue where the instance thinks its root filesystem is
much smaller than the size of the volume that I used to create it. Not
only that, the OS cannot decide on whether it thinks the size is right
or wrong.

See the following pastebin:
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/eNt8nLNLhHAL5OYICqbs/

Notice that everything shows the size as 20 GB except df, which shows it
as 2.8 GB. I ran the previous instance out of space before spinning up
this new one, so 2.8 seems to be the winner (though wrong).

Figured I'd check to see if this is a known issue while I dig deeper.

[Openstack-operators] Strange: lost physical connectivity to compute hosts when using native (ryu) openflow interface

2017-04-25 Thread Gustavo Randich
(using Mitaka / Ubuntu 16 / Neutron DVR / OVS / VXLAN / l2_population)

This sounds very strange (to me): recently, after a switch outage, we lost
connectivity to all our Mitaka hosts. We had to enter via iLO host by host
and restart networking service to regain access. Then restart
neutron-openvswitch-agent to regain access to VMs.

At first glance we thought it was a problem with the NIC linux driver of
the hosts not detecting link state correctly.

Then we reproduced the issue simply bringing down physical interfaces for
around 5 minutes, then up again. Same issue.

And then we found that if instead of using native (ryu) OpenFlow
interface in Neutron Openvswitch we used ovs-ofctl, the problem disappears.

Any clue?

Thanks in advance.

I know that some cyborg folks and nova folks are planning to be there. Now we
need to drive some ops folks.

Hi all,

A quick FYI that this Forum session exists:
https://www.openstack.org/summit/boston-2017/summit-schedule/events/18803/special-hardware
(https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/BOS-forum-special-hardware) is a
thing this Forum.

It would be great to see a good representation from both the Nova and
Cyborg dev teams, and also ops ready to share their experience and
use-cases.

[Openstack-operators] Glance image cache survey

2017-04-25 Thread Brian Rosmaita
Hello operators,

The Glance team is conducting another survey about Glance usage.

We could use responses from *all* operators on this one. It's about
using the glance-cache tool, and we are interested in hearing from both
operators who use it and also operators who don't.

The length of the survey varies depending on which path your answers
take, but it should take less than 5 minutes to fill out.

https://goo.gl/forms/LvAq0anMiHRh7Hb32

Please answer before 23:59 UTC on 4 May 2017 (we'd like to have the
results available to discuss at the Forum in Boston).

thanks,
brian

[Openstack-operators] [Forum] Unanswered Requirements

2017-04-25 Thread Melvin Hillsman
Hey everyone,

I would like to take the opportunity to open the discussion up for feedback
from the community leading into the Boston Forum.

*Session Description*: Collaborate/communicate around user stories, gap
analysis, what fits in the current state of tech, prioritize what would
have the greatest impact in reducing pain for users. Ideally we would like
to discuss in this session successes and failures of the current state of
our feedback loop. We should be able to identify patterns that fit within a
larger system/process that we are able to iterate through as the way to get
user requirements implemented into code. [1]

Moving the conversation forward is the aim with the ultimate goal being the
first iteration of a plan that can be implemented, and one that gathers
data/insight consistently to make specific and relevant improvements.
