The Qt4 bits are production Qt4 packages and cohabit nicely with *3 versions,
you don't need to worry about those.

The KDE4 packages are the second developer preview of KDE4, aimed at people
wanting to develop/port KDE4/Qt4 applications without the hassle of building
all the libs and base infrastructure themself, and make no guarantees or sets
any expectations. If things are only 'pretty broken' at this stage I'm
happy. Unless you want to contribute to kde 4 desktop, I wouldn't run a
whole session yet, but run KDE 4 apps on KDE3.

~/.kde is not protected by default, but you can set KDEHOME, KDETMP (default
is /tmp/kde-$USER) and KDEVARTMP (default /var/tmp/kde-$USER) elsewhere and
run KDE4 apps in parallel with a running KDE3 desktop. When we start
including KDE4 on the distro it will be set up to work in parallel like this.

kdebase3 should not have been replaced, but we had a spurious Provides:
kdebase line in the spec for kdebase 4 which caused the problem, we've
removed that now.

If CPU cycles aren't tight or you want to stay bleeding edge the script
kdesvn-build (in the kdesdk svn module) will fetch and compile qt-copy and
the kde4 base platform for you in a nice remote place like /space.

Finally, lxr.kde.org is a good way to look for examples of the Qt4 Interview
technology in use.

Re: [opensuse] Connecting to Linux from Windows

2006-11-27 Thread Philip Mark Donaghy

I use Putty from windows also. Or I run the apache2 server on SuSE to
access files on linux from windows. Samba and WebDAV are good ways to
write data to linux system from windows, but they are slightly more
difficult to set up. Also the a windows filesystem can be accessed
from linux by adding an entry to /etc/fstab.

Recently I've been emulating windows using qemu. Basically you install
windows on a hard drive image created with qemu-img. Then windows is
actually running on a Linux host. In fact there are a flood of ways to
exchange data between windows and linux. We don't need a deal between
corporations to do that.

Here's a quickstart guide. http://kidsquid.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/QuickStartGuid

I also documented this on my blog,

You can, as the HCL states, download a driver from Realtek's site. It
now lists 1.0.5 which will compile on SUSE (I've been using a beta of
1.0.5 since I reported the compilation failure to Realtek). The problem
is that it causes full system lock-ups on my machine, so I actually use
a Netgear FA511 PCMCIA card. I'm trying the release version as a quick
diff shows it's not just a renumbered version of the beta. I'll report
back.

In the meantime if you want to get it download if from here[1] and note
that 'Site 1' doesn't have it yet - I used 'Site 3'.

AFAICS that's disinformation. See http://www.namesys.com/. v3 is not

As far as I understand, reiserfs is fine. The change to ext3 is included now
because of expected future changes. The developers want to make sure
everything works smoothly before new versions are out and requiring other

Guess: This because the DNS of the network isn't configured
or not configured in the correct way. First of all the
system requires a name (normally without any domain name
part). Then the system requires for each network a Full
Qualified Domain Name (please note that the former name
can be part of the FQDN but can also an other host name
and can also be different for each network). At last
the YP domain name has nothing todo with the DNS domain
name even if normally identical for practial reasons.

If postfix or sendmail do not know about the FQDN of the
networks accessible then it have to be configured. This
can be done by using a DNS server of the appropiate network
or within the configuration of postfix or sendmail.

Don't touch sendmail.cf nor submit.cf but use the configuration
with /etc/sysconfig/mail and /etc/sysconfig/sendmail togther
with `SuSEconfig --module sendmail' _OR_ disable SuSEconfig
within /etc/sysconfig/suseconfig if you're doing all by hand
(without using YaST and/or SuSEconfig anymore). If you're are
touching files like sendmail.cf SuSEconfig will not touch such
file anymore due MD% checksum comparision.

And even if you change sendmail.cf and/or submit.cf for you're own
you should use /etc/mail/linux.mc and/or /etc/mail/linux.submit.mc
as starting point to use the M4 macros for generating sendmail.cf
and/or submit.cf ... simply to be sure not to run over a removed
TAB with space within a .cf file :))

I have an mx entry configured correctly.

Glad to hear that your problem is solved.

Just to clarify a few general things about SMTP:

- the HELO string that the sending server is using
is not derived from DNS, it's usually the hostname
that is configured locally on the machine. RFC 2821 says,
this string has to be a resolvable FQDN for a domain/host.

- a sending server does not neccessarily need a MX record,
only correct A record and reverse DNS

- the MX record is used to announce servers that will accept
mail for a domain, not neccessarily server that will send
  for a domain.

- if the server is both sending and receiving mails for a domain,
then all records (MX, A, reverse DNS) are neccessary.

- if no MX record is set for a domain, mail will be sent to
the A record of that domain. Though you should set a MX record.

Sure, the distro is really too basic to be broken. Ubuntu basically integrate
and freeload what debian, novell, redhat and others produce, without further
innovation, and appart of a installer that basically copies a image to the
disk and gives you a empty desktop with common applications, there is not
more beyond that. Lot of users have enough with it, and that is ok.

Once you need to configure stuff (as Daniel Molkentin says very well in his
blog) then you realize how basic the distro is.

with Novell, Redhat and other distros, you can expect some controversial
changes to be done, because there is some risk taken in order to innovate:

- 3D desktop was introduced
- Desktops with usability changes in mind.
- OpenOffice native desktop integration
- ZenWorks provides a enterprise level software deployment system, and SLE is
ready to be used with that.
- zypp patch management.
- Xen was introduced in the kernel.
- networkmanager. Basically maintained by Redhat and Novell. The kde
integration is Novell work.
- SUSE is one of the few distros where you can setup strange raids+lvm+etc
with a few clicks.
- YaST remains the best configuration tool for Linux. Opensource, and
supporting 3 user interface backends.
- The opensuse build service is one of the most innovative services provided
to the community, and it is opensource (launchpad anyone?)

The community behind openSUSE is who gives us direction when we innovate and
break. 10.2 is a perfect example in how the community gave its feedback to
fix as much as possible what we broke in 10.1. There is no valid excuse to
not ship a high quality distro.

To be honest, I am proud of how broken our factory sometimes is, because it
shows how much we want to fix bug #1.

just my 2 cents.

Novell does not ship all the codecs and files because of the patents on
mp3. I use packman.

Use a mirror. Toget what you need. If you search the archives you can

A lot of host do not have correct HELO implemented, Postfix can check this
with REJECT_UNKNOWN_HOSTNAME (for Postfix 2.3+ this has been renamed to
REJECT_UNKNOWN_HELO_HOSTNAME).

Even big Internet companies like Yahoo and Google have misconfigured HELO
for their servers, so it's not recommended to use these restrictions on a
general mailserver.

Postfix doesn't even have a check that says the a record and helo must be
identical, and for good reason. To number of false positives would be
astronomical. (^-^)

It is considered "best practise", but it's not what is implemented on many
servers.

Unless some one enforces it on the receiving end as an antispam measure, I

Then he's an idiot. Especially big companies that are sending millions of
mails per day have dedicated send-only mailservers, so it's NOT a good
idea to demand that the very same server that is sending a mail is
required to accept mail back for the sender address.

I encountered such a weird "antispam" measure only once. This is not
covered by any RFC. RFC 2821 explicitely says, if no mx record exists for
the recipient domain then the server has to resolve the a record of the
recipient domain and deliver the mail to that server.

This was replied back in October, when Remastered 10.1 hit the download

Basically, for an internet installation, you just give these sources

I tried different entries in /etc/fstab, but "mount usbfs /proc/bus/usb" always
gives
an "mount point /proc/bus/usb does not exist"

In 10.1 everything worked fine.

Booting the CD only gives me the grub> prompt but I expected to be

I suspect that I have incorrectly specified the CD as the device from

is the reference to the CD correct, please? My CD-ROM is /dev/hdb.

VMWare seems to be quite slow with this. I had a discussion with them months ago
about this. Nevertheless I´ll try it again.

Will you enable the module in the default kernel again?

Thanks for the info

There is no delta inst-source directory not even under stable or current it is
only torrent or isos.
(at least I can't find it :-) )

I see it is how the delta-paches are built up. There were a *LOT* of patches,
but they were fairly small
because they were just deltas, So it took only ~20minutes to patch up a system.

But it is not very userfriendly to have to add hundreds of patches as the first
thing.

Thanks Again.

Marcus,

in case this should be denied: would it be possible to offer this
specific module through the buildService? I think this should basically
be possible, no?
(I just bring this up, as the kernel team might try to push this away,
as we're already past the RC line)

Well, I can happily report that, after nearly six hours of use,
including very heavy traffic it hasn't locked up so it seems to Work For
Me[TM] on Factory/i586; YMMV as always.

Now, as for why it's not included in openSUSE, there is a license
question mark. No license (GPL or otherwise) is included in the tarball
and the only clue is line 98 of r1000_n.c that reads:

MODULE_LICENSE("GPL");

I've asked Realtek the question of the license and received no response.

Hi,

over the weekend i hacked on the search in the webarchive a bit. Please
try it. It is limited at the moment to static indexes (no updates) of
two lists. Everything else should work.

http://lists.opensuse.org/cgi-bin/new_search.cgi

New Features:

* Only the body part of the message pages are indexed (no navigation
  etc. anymore)
* Search only in Subject or From
* Limit search results to strings in Subject or From
* Limit search results to date ranges
* Some minor tweaks in the page layout

If you find any problems please let me know.

Okay, I installed ktorrent. Docs I read say "simply click on the

I am horrified by the user unfriendliness of the new KDE start menu. I

What was once a piece of cake is now a nightmare!

How do I remove it and replace it with the old "inefficient" menu?

If someone could point me to the discussion/arguments of how this was
supposed to be easier to use I would be greatfull.

Scratch that. It's just the opensuse torrents that are screwed up.
Just tried a mandriva torrent and it's working fine. So I guess the

Well, Kenneth, I don't think that I would put quite that strongly but I do

Like someone else has said just right click on the start menu an
Switch to KDE Menu Style. that will take you back to the old style of

I like the new menu style, but I don't like that I have to wear out my
mouse by having to click on all of the sub-menu buttons to navigate
further. The old style only required that you hover the mouse over the

Please provide too much information rather than too little. We are not
sitting in front of your screen and have little to no knowledge how,
what or why you do things. ie:
You managed to change /etc/fstab -- To What?
You gave command to mout media/cdrecorder-- How and to What?

note: "Only root can mount" indicates incorrect /etc/fstab
"Can't find media/cdrecorder" indicates incorrect mount command
 s/b /media/cdrecorder or /dev/cdrecorder

Telling exactly what you want, what you did to what is important. A
single incorrect character can cause havoc.

Well it would be /dev/cdrecorder, you need the preceding "/".

I'm not sure any of this thread answers a question of mine, but I may be
wrong.
What I would like to do is have a transparent path in both directions to
exchange files between an XP system and Linux 9.3. I also need concise

Catherine,

Is there an easy way for me to determine if these are NSS volumes or
traditional volumes? I suspect traditional since my notes say the
computer had been running Netware 3.12. But I don't know when NSS
became common.

Also, I don't currently have SLES nor OES, but this may give me enough
reason to upgrade.

If you are using Linux for Open Enterprise Server, NSS volumes are

For OES Linux:

1) Make sure that the NSS services are loaded and running. In YaST, click
System > Runlevel Editor > Expert Mode. The NSS module should be enabled. If
they are not there, you need to go to the Software Install and install them,
then enable them. Any changes you make do not take effect until you reboot

3) Use the Storage role in iManager or use NSSMU to mount and manage the

This very much sounds like your driver doesn't allow XVideo surfaces in
that resolution any more. Maybe you had the binary NVidia drivers
installed? Then an update of xorg-x11-drivers-video or the kernel might
reinstall the open source driver, which might not support XVideo for
your card well enough.

If it's radeon or intel, maybe it's a new driver bug :-/
Or a misinstallation (mismatching versions of some packages).

You can always circumvene this by using the xshm output plugin
(xine -V xshm) - though that will be slower, and scaled images don't
look as good at all.

1st) This error message does not state that this is due to missing codec
 support
2nd) Please don't call it broken. You may call it stripped, or even
crippled (even we call it that way), because of this legalese
 stupidity.

samba and krusader allows direct transfer with both sides showing, ie:

NSS was introduced with Novell Netware 5, so it has to be a traditional

I haven't found the php_interbase module with SUSE at all. That is the one
you'd be looking for. I've seen it for Wintendo, but not *nix yet.

You might try to setup an ODBC connection, which will work. It might be a bit
slower, but it should do for now.

You may also have better luck on one of the PHP bulletin boards.

I've some ideas, see below. Especially the "ModeValidation" options.
It should be enough.

Still this issue? I am not aware that SaX2 has any limits regarding the
selectable size. You just cannot select modes your monitor cannot
display, so if you explicitely select a larger one, it should be
possible. Be sure to select a LCD one (reduced modes).

Hm. Sounds like a bug. Anyway, just select a standard monitor.

That monitor description is good enough. You need at maximum 65.3kHz
HorizSync.

> Identifier "Modes[0]"

It might also help, if you include

  # 1680x1050 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.76MA) hsync: 65.29 kHz; pclk: 146.25 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync
+vsync

*or*

  # 1680x1050 59.88 Hz (CVT 1.76MA-R) hsync: 64.67 kHz; pclk: 119.00 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050" 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync
-vsync

here (the later is reduced mode, only works with LCDs (but should work
through a VGA cable as well).

Add

  Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidMaxPClkCheck,NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"

in the "Device" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Some Monitors ly about
their capabilities. If this works, please create a bug report so we can
add the monitor to the database. If it doesn't, please create a bug
report, it's probably more complicated.

Maybe you even have to add "NoEdidModes" to this list. Maybe only one of
these is enough. These options are explained in
/usr/share/doc/packages/x11-video-nvidia/README.txt
(or /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA/README.txt, depending on your installation
method).

In that case you will need the reduced mode. You probably have to add it
manually. Your card and/or monitor is not dual-link capable. For more
information, you need to specify something like "-logverbose 9" to the X
command line.

Hope this helps

I don't suggest changing gamma. All monitors have a gamma of 2.3, and
all graphics systems (including web sites) rely on that. If you change
the gamma value, stuff typically looks horribly broken.

BTW - most times monitors say that gamma is 1.0 if in fact it is 2.3

For newer driver you probably only have to change this line (hint:
change defaultdepth and depth to 24 as well ;)

Make also sure that there are no "Option" lines in the "Device"
section. With some monitors you need some options, maybe even a
ModeLine, but typically you don't.

I like the new menu style, but I don't like that I have to wear out my
mouse by having to click on all of the sub-menu buttons to navigate

sub menus to access them.

I'm undecided on this new menu thing. It might be good once I get

only one using it... the latest release of Sabayon also used the new

Doug McGarrett wrote:

Your question seems to be a bit different.

What I would like to do is have a transparent path in both directions to
exchange files between an XP system and Linux 9.3. I also need concise
directions how to set this up in both systems. Drag and drop would be
nice, but is not essential.

Doug, you can do this in various ways, but using a share on Windows and
setting up Samba on the SLP 9.3 machine would do the trick if you need
to copy files back and forth with or without a GUI. If you're using
Active Directory, then you could even have authentication happen against
AD for both.

Concise directions on how to set up and configure Samba can be found at
www.samba.org, but you may want to check your SLP 9.3 documentation as
well since you may be able to configure Samba via YaST.

If this is overkill for your needs, then another alternative is to
install and configure SSH on your systems.

Of course, the developers left a choice behind with the right click and

Looks like aroung 5+ to 1 against the new so far. The new seems to be
emulating windoz XP, which I think is dismal compared to KDE std or

If the original volumes were created under NW 3.12, they're most definitely
traditional volumes.

I've used SLED 10 with the Novell client in the past with good success, but

having to reload windows on a machine in my bosses office so not had
much time to devote to the new install yet.

Looks like aroung 5+ to 1 against the new so far. The new seems to be
emulating windoz XP, which I think is dismal compared to KDE std or
windoz 98.

I'm still waiting for the conspiracy theory about the Novell-Microsoft deal
and the menu change :)

FWIW, I think the new menu is a nice choice to have. It can always be chnged
back by 2 mouse clicks. No need for anyone to stress.

Cheers

I'm undecided on this new menu thing. It might be good once I get
used to it, but the endless clicking _is_ annoying. SUSE isn't the
only one using it... the latest release of Sabayon also used the new
menu thingy.

If only they'd look to the OS/2 WPS for inspiration. That's one
fantastic desktop!

You can configure quite a bit of Samba inside Yast, but are far better
to make sure SWAT is installed, and access that via any browser
(http://localhost:901).

My viewsonic

is grossly overbright and over contrasty without dropping those settings
to less than 20%. I'm not the only one of this opinion

SWAT is covered at samba.org, for more info see for example:

I like it a lot. Some experienced users might prefer the old one but for
novice users it's definitly a usability improvement. I hope KDE4 is
heading in this direction.

LOL. I'm amazed I've not seen much discussion of this new menu
structure yet. Then again I'm equally guilty as I've kept quiet.

Yes, I too don't care for it. I think that the SUSE team did a great
job on restructuring the Gnome menu for SLED10 (and now in 10.2) but the
implementation in KDE leaves much to be desired. For one thing on a
slow graphics card (which, due to ATI's fglrx driver not yet recognizing
Xorg 7.2 currently describes mine) the new menu is horrible to watch
slowly panning back and forth in a rather cramped area (yeah I know, you
can resize it).

I find the Gnome implementation nice because, when I'm going to the menu
to find something, all my attention is devoted to the task of finding
that thing. So filling the screen with a large menu and then quickly
drawing my attention to subareas (either by incremental search or
categories) makes a lot of sense and helps me locate whatever I'm
looking for. The new KDE menu on the other hand makes me scroll back
and forth in a small area, divides things into tabs which I cannot
modify nor add to (first thing I tried was RMB'ing to see the "add new
tab" menu, which was not there), and in general leaves me feeling
frustrated.

I switched it back to the old style (RMB on the start to see the option).

Kedit is a good one. All you need to do is su , type in root password
, and you're ready to go.
