According to what? Gnome or KDE? Ignore them. What does the OSD in the
*monitor* think you're feeding it? Worry about what's actually coming out

You won't get a whole lot of support from the default SuSE kernel... that
HD Audio controller is very new. If you want all the audio sources to show
up (rather than the simple analog out the mixer makes available by
default), you'll want to install the beta ALSA drivers. Not the utilities,
not the libraries, JUST the drivers.

Except that it can be, of course. It can *always* be checked.

Whether or not it can be *repaired*, or not, is another issue. If you can
remount it read/only, you can repair it, then re-mount it read/write again.

All this spouting off about runlevels is utter nonsense.

If you're keeping log files in the root, you have far larger problems than
whether or not you can unmount a filesystem. Log files belong in /var,

The runlevel certainly doesn't have anything to do with it... don't know
who would have told you it did.

You don't mount devices, only filesystems. Filesystems often, but not
nearly always, live on devices.

man mount(1)

No, you need to unmount it (or mount it read-only) in order to *repair* it
with fsck. You can *check* it all you want.

Or touch /forcefsck, and then reboot the box, since you already indicated
that wasn't a problem.

> Can someone tell me what to enter to do the unmount?

You don't want to do that... if you unmount the filesystem, exactly where
do you expect your running software to be coming from after you do so?

Amazing to me that in the entire thread to date, no one pointed out how
fsck actually works, or why you really don't want to un-mount the
filesystem.

While that may be true in theory, in practice it's really not a good idea

Or have you never gotten to watch what happens when you un-mount /usr from

I don't give a tinker's d*mn about on-line video, myself, but since you
mention QuickTime specifically...

Why does Totem have such a problem with accurate playback of .MOV files?
It seems to be independent of codec... it'll play them, but the colors are
all shifted weirdly. Mplayer, of course, plays the same file accurately.

We won't talk about the disaster that is Xine... it's bad enough that Totem
uses its libraries, but I'll be d*mnned if I'm ever going to use that
disaster of a UI the Xine devs think is so cool. I'll do without first.

Not directly, no.

When I installed 10.2, I did everything other than root and swap on LVM for
this reason. LVM lets you add and subtract from the pool of available disk
space.

Nothing stops you, of course, from just making a new filesystem on what
used to be the Windows partition, then mounting it somewhere in /srv or
/local.

Failing that, back it up (endless solutions available), repartition it the
way you want it, then put the data back. You'd want to back it up before
you messed with the partition table in any case.

Your analogy is incorrect. A drive letter is a *logical* construct, not a
physical one. There's no direct comparison to *nix device names,
especially now that we've had 2000 and XP, where it's extremely simple to
rearrange the drive letters without changing the partitioning scheme.

[opensuse] Dell E520 and snd_hda_intel

2007-01-14 Thread Marc Wilson
I know there was a big thread about this earlier in December, but no one
since has said anything about it. :)

Just got my new E520. Core 2 Duo, 965 chipset, and no sound support in
10.2 to speak of. It looks like it's deliberate, based on the information
at http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Sound_Cards ... of course, I'm not even sure
that the current 2.6.19.2 kernel would support this motherboard audio
properly.

Analog audio out and SPDIF.

Well, you can install the current alsa 1.0.14rc1 over the top of the
2.6.18-34 kernel and make it give you *all* the options. :)

Just build ONLY the snd_hda_intel modules, and only use the install-modules
target to install it. Minimum disruption to the existing kernel install.

Lots of stuff in the changelog for that version about new PCI ID's for
Dell machines, and fixes/changes to the Sigmatel support as well.

I couldn't find anything in the list archives, but did find some stuff for
other distributions on the 'net. :)

Anyway, figured I'd make my first post to the list at least vaguely
constructive
