Hi Peter

Yep, I'm getting a lot too. I think it's down to the reconfiguration of the
list - mails sent to opensuse@opensuse.org and suse-linux-e are arriving here
twice due to the consolidation of lists.

Strange, I only got my own email, Hugo's, Per's and Guillermoo's once. The
last duplicate I received was yesterday evening from Ed McCanless, sent to
both lists...

From: Ed McCanless <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: suse-linux-e@suse.com,
 opensuse@opensuse.org
Subject: [opensuse] Re: [SLE] Removing installed application

Apart from that (and there were a lot yesterday) most have been fine with just
a single copy.

No, not that. I filter them out and it is working correctly, I think.

Maybe? No, then I would see every email duplicated, and I don't, only some
of them.

I haven't stopped to find a pattern.

My guess is perhaps some have a procmail filter to automatically put
suse-linux-e in the reply, so now it gets sent to both. There are 2
emails since they are sent to both lists, which are now only one, so
both come here.

Now thats what I was thinking I'm not getting any suse-e mails so is the
solution unsubscribe from suse-e?

So far I have 16 email's on this subject (Including my own posts).

Apart from the list consolidation, there's also the crappy configuration
(like LKML does) remarked by Eberhard. For LKML such a config is fine,
not so for the suse lists IMO.

There is also a good reason not to. Let's take the promiment example of
LKML, where you do not have to be subscribed. So you have to be Cc'ed or
To'ed somehow. Second case LKML: People throw all their list mails into
one folder (the unimportant stuff) and get a direct reply for threads
they have taken part in. That's why your patch is often ignored when
just submitted to lkml without any persons directly cc'ed.

Aaah!! this is starting to 'P&*$' me off its got to be the list sending me two
of everything, I've heard of two for the price of one but its getting
annoying

I'm already on a number of differant mailing lists and the extra load is
distracting, if while reading one list suddenley theres 37 new posts you
brain thinks "Heads up whats going on over there" only to find that its
double bluff.

Has 10.1 flakyness crept into the list server?

Open 2 mails that are duplicates. This for instance. View the complete
headers, are they being delivered to 2 different email addresses,
meaning were you subscribed to both opensuse@opensuse.org and
suse-linux-e@suse.com before the switch, but with 2 different
email-addresses?
Or even better, email 2 duplicates to this list with complete headers so
we can try to make heads and tails of them.

I have yet to see a multiple instance of any mail.

Put recipe this in your .procmailrc
:0Wh: msgid.lock
| formail -D 1024 $PMDIR/msgid.cache

See procmailex(1)

Put this as the first recipe in your procmail rc and it will segragate
duplicate msg's:

# ---
LOCKFILE = msgid.cache.lock

LOCKFILE

No, it is your setup. I am subscribed to several mailing lists, some have
been redirected to the new list server, some haven't. No double posts have
appeared on my server.

I would suggest you do some more in-depth analysis, before you scream murder.

- Is the message-id really the same in those double mails?
- Are they delivered to the same address (again, look at the header)?

Apologies - I've just been checking my mail-logs, and I AM getting all
postings in duplo. I just feed all mailing-list mail into my
news-server, which is really good at dealing with duplicate messages.

In my case I am subscribed to both "opensuse@opensuse.org" and
"suse-linux-e@suse.com", but with two different addresses.

This made me check my cyrus IMAP logs as well, and yes, I'm getting duplicates
as well. Cyrus is also very good at filtering them out

Henne? It looks like the opensuse lists are sending everything out twice

I don't believe that it is the list software, but individual client's
list address function. Mutt will address mail originally sent to
suse-linux-e to both addresses, which I then edit, since I *am*
subscribed to both lists.

note: this _only_ happens to mail which was sent to suse-linux-e
originally.

What are you talking about? It's just not true. I get even my own mail twice,
and I know I'm not sending it to two lists, and I know I'm not sending it to
suse-linux-e

I would guess it happens for users who are/were subscribed to SLE. My guess is
Henne migrated us to opensuse by simply cat:ing the subscribers file for SLE
and appending it to the opensuse file, so we now have two entries each in the
subscribers file for opensuse@opensuse.org

It does not.

True. As we have the mailinglist headers pointing to opensuse and the
"to" is to suse-linux-e mutt will insert both into your mail.

> note: this _only_ happens to mail which was sent to suse-linux-e

Exactly. Thats why posting to suse-linux-e is depreciated. Once all the
old suse-linux-e threads run out we wont have that problem anymore
(except someone uses the depreciated address).

So, the problem is external to SuSE, you got two copies: one sent to
opensuse@opensuse.org, and another to suse-linux-e@suse.com; both got
posted, although I can find only one in the archive (and it is difficult

For this instance, the "culprit" is Ed McCanless, or rather, the merging

Re: [opensuse] Duplicate Mails

2006-11-12 Thread Henne Vogelsang
Hi,

To everyone that gets any duplicates. There are a couple of things
you should check.

1. Are you subscribed with two different addresses?

Check the header of the email. The "Return-Path" header contains your
subscription address. It looks like this:

Return-Path: opensuse-+bounces--@opensuse.org

The subscribed address has the @ sign replaced by a =

If you recive mails to two different accounts unsubscribe one.

2. Is this mail adressed to both list names?

This list has 2 list names. opensuse@opensuse.org and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you send a mail to both addresses at once
   it will be delivered twice.

3. Is this mail really a duplicate or did someone send the same mail twice?

Also check the headers. Each mail includes a couple of "Received"
headers. They usually contain the ESMTP id. If they are not the same
then those are different mails. You can also check the Message-ID
header, though it is not as reliable as the ESMTP id's.

After disabling duplicate suppression in cyrus (and repairing some mess in my
postfix config) I'm not seeing dupes at all anymore. I guess I was
misinterpreting what cyrus was saying

The archive software is able to find duplicate msgid's and archive only
one.

Nope. Works like a charm.

Posted above are the relevant sections from the headers of a duplicate
e-mail, the only one from my most recent mail poll. Note the ESMTP id's
are the same.

Mmmm, you are right. It is links that stuck with the cached copy and
doesn't check again. I have to exit the program, revisiting the link is

Morning All

It may be my fault I have two registrations
1. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
2. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now on this Laptop I'm not getting any duplicates but having said that its
only got the peter@ account so theres something flaky going on with the
lightstar@ account however I'm sure lightstar is not subscribed to opensuse.

I cant check my SuSE box at home until Tuesday night

P.S. My original and subsequent posts are not showing up on this machine
which??

Aaah!! this is starting to 'P&*$' me off its got to be the list sending me two
of everything, I've heard of two for the price of one but its getting
annoying

I'm already on a number of differant mailing lists and the extra load is
distracting, if while reading one list suddenley theres 37 new posts you
brain thinks "Heads up whats going on over there" only to find that its
double bluff.

Has 10.1 flakyness crept into the list server?

I received about 10 duplicates only, and in each case except 2, this was
the reason. The remaining 2 were because the mail was sent twice.

Well, I actually got about 39 or 40 more duplicates, but those were
because I saw a couple of interesting threads in the previous opensuse
list, and downloaded a couple of mboxes to get the whole threads --
merging them into the sle stuff I retain proved interesting :-)

That means, that up the host e450.mnsi.net, there is only _one_ mail.
The duplication has happend on a later host between e450.mnsi.net and
your host. So there's nothing the list-owner can do about it, it is
your or your mail-provider's problem.
