I searched more information and seems that they are available at the SLED SDK
DVD. But why don't provide them easily from a ftp server?

I don't think interpretation that would fly.

Unless you are claiming they totally rewrote the linux kernel
from scratch, all of Gnome, etc.

Its all GPL!

Not all is GPL but much.
But that's not the point. People often think that someone has to provide
the sources in any case for GPL software. But only people having access
to the binaries must get access to the sources also. So only if you are
a SLED customer you can ask for the sources for the GPL'ed software on it.

IANAL,
 Wolfgang

That's my interpretation too, only if you distribute the product do you
need to give source, so one could take the position that until one purchases
a copy no distribution takes place (evaluation software aside). Therefore
there is no requirement to give source to anyone except paying customers.

I think that as soon as you make it public (ie. not only for
internal/personal use) you have to make the sources available.
I guess a follow up question to that would be; If you don't modify the
sources at all, but simply package them (without any patches etc), do
you still have to make them available?

Cheers,
Magnus

Your are quite correct SLED is a proprietary produce of Novell. The
RPM's are not loading on a server as you purchase the boxed set and
licences etc
Scott :-)

 Hi,

Is there any way to get the source rpms for SLED 10? Should Novell
 provide them?

I dono, but perhaps the source RPMs become available once you buy SLED.

I'm not sure they that are obligated to give you source if you are not
a customer.

This is backwards of the old Suse, where getting source was easy
but getting an ISO image was virtually impossible.

Opensuse is a different thing of course.

as far as I know, SLED is not gpl, and proprietary to novell therefore the
source isnt provided. Dont quote me on this though. I remember years ago
trying to sell off old box sets of suse I had purchased from novell on ebay
and had my seller status revoked and received nasty emails from novell.

Like you said opensuse the source is freely available, and I believe is re
distributable but would have to remove any reference to novell in the whole
distro. kind of like what centos does with redhat linux. then again, im not
a lawyer lol.
