I'm guessing that the bios support of smart, is that the bios will read the smart log somehow on boot and warn the user if there is an impending failure (ie, smart predicts a failure in 24 hours). I'm not sure that disabling smart in the bios will really stop smartctl in linux from learning the smart status of the drive. But this is just a guess.
