As an end user you shouldn't need to worry about the acronyms, but I'm
thinking that things would go much better if you weren't running such an
outdated version of suse linux. The "linux expert" really ought to have
mentioned that.

IOW, 9.3 was an improvement over 9.2, and 10.0 was an improvement over 9.3,
enhancing the handling of peripherals. (The jury is still out on 10.1)

That said, most printers should "just work", i.e. be automatically detected,
and easily set up with a few mouse clicks. However not all printers work this
way, so you do need to practice discernment in your purchasing.

I'm running an HP Business Inkjet 1200 network printer and it's been flawless.
I've found that most epson and HP printers work pretty well in fact, but do
verify before buying.

For some printers that don't support linux, I've had good luck with
turboprint, which enables such devices to print under linux.

http://www.turboprint.de/english.html

The drivers are a free download, but put a turboprint logo on everything you
print. For $30, you can get the license to print without the logo, once you
determine that your printer works ok.

What happens with what? You need to be a little more specific.

Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org and click on the suggested printer
link on the left hand side. You will find a list of printers known to
work with linux.
