Re: [opensuse-factory] Announcement: Software management for openSUSE
Hi, Sorry to all, i've not good understood the period: "and not longer part of the openSUSE distribution", :-) It's a really good news, if the 10.1 worked bad for me the only reason was only ZEN, the 10.2 is good, the updater applet in KDE works and not make a unclean system, for the direct use of YaST. Better solution for better 10.3 ;-) Best Regards Vincenzo - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [opensuse-factory] Announcement: Software management for openSUSE
Hi, And so for the next openSUSE ( the 10.3 ) we will have ZEN works? Best regards Vincenzo 2007/4/18, Andreas Jaeger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: openSUSE is focusing on native software management by using YaST and libzypp, the package management library. ZENworks Linux Management is Novell's solution for enterprise-class resource management for desktops and servers. ZENworks components are fully available and supported for SUSE Linux Enterprise based products and not longer part of the openSUSE distribution. Product development for both ZENworks and SUSE Linux Enterprise concentrates on continued interoperability solutions for remote and local software management. Re: [opensuse-factory] Updates applet for GNOME
Hi, So but the problem is also that ZEN-Updater doesn't work very well with openSUSE (probabily for the zmd base) so why don't make a alternative base o ZEN-Updater (like smart or other)? Actually the tree is already open for 10.3 development (and it has already started), but it won't be synced out in the next weeks to save mirror bandwidth for the 10.2 downloads. So you won't see the changes in factory for a while, but they are already happening. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Vincenzo

Re: [opensuse-factory] Media for openSUSE 10.2 - additional sources, Idea?
Hi, I tried this kommander script when i had 10.1, it works very well, but who of the new user that try openSUSE for first time know this application? Vincenzo
Re: [opensuse-factory] Media for openSUSE 10.2 - additional sources, Idea?
Hi, It's a good idea, not only for your kids, because there are a lot of people that try openSUSE for the first time in they're life and don't know how to can see a .mpg file or listen an mp3 with amarok. For me this is a very good idea that give to openSUSE another one reason for consider it a very "simple" distribution. Vincenzo
Re: [opensuse-factory] dist meeting minutes 2006-11-16
Hi, I'm sorry but i mean another thing. I would like that yast can use apt repository, because you and the openSUSE team removed the apt official support in SUSE 10.1, and the people that use apt and synaptic from 9.2 are oblige to use apt with their risk. I hope that you understand my question. Vincenzo
Re: [opensuse-factory] dist meeting minutes 2006-11-16
Hi andreas, I'm sorry, if this are the changes that you would like to commit in 10.3, can you consider to adding the support for the apt repository? I ask this because in my community (www.suseitalia.org) there are a lot of people that use apt4rpm, and i saw that in 10.1 yast can use the YUM sources, and us think that apt is more better than yum. Thank for your consideration. Vincenzo 2006/11/17, Andreas Jaeger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: FYI, here're the minutes from our discussion. I hope to see this for 10.3... Andreas Topic: Encrypted Home Directories * Main new feature: Per user encrypted home * Proposal: - Enable per user encrypted home partitions (using pam_mount) - use dm-crypt + LUKS as default instead of cryptoloop Challenges + Problems: * currently KDM accesses home directory before authentification (after user name is known) to get information about the last session. An encrypted home partition this needs changes in the logic. * For ssh-key it's a problem to read the key files since they are stored in the home directory, only password authentification would work. * Other programs might read the homedirectory, like procmail. We have to check which other programs do this and decide how to handle this, e.g. a shadow home directory (or union filesystems) for procmail, secret keys... * Backup software is a challenge, users want encrypted backups. * Manually mounting via /etc/fstab is not possible currently with dm-crypt, other distributions use /etc/fscrypttab or we would need to extra add support to allow this with /etc/fstab. Use-case: A separate encrypted partition with secrect data that is only mounted manually if needed by the user and then unmounted again. * On-the-fly upgrade would be fine. Unfortunately dm-crypt uses two extra blocks so this cannot be done without losing data. * 10.2 has all the basic support for dm-crypt and LUKS but it's not integrated. * Linux only supports only 255 loopback mounts, so this limits the maximum of users that can be logged in at the same time. * FUSE and encrypted single files would be an option as well but there are some drawbacks with it. * Use case: Laptop stolen or taken away. If one user is comprimised, not all should be comprised. * Masterkey that is encrypted by the users login, so that only one password is needed to login. * screensaver issues (just close the lid) What happens with a locked screen and laptop taken away still running? * suspend to disk How to handle suspend to disk? Umount before suspend and remount later? Changes for this: YaST changes: * support dm-crypt by default for new installations in yast2-storage * during user creation allow creation of encrypted home directories * During update: Support old cryptoloop partitions and allow new installations. Base system changes: * Using pam_mount * Enable dm-crypt in boot.crypto * Handle /etc/fstab unless to not regress * Migration programs to migrate from cryptoloop to dm-crypt Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- Vincenzo
[opensuse-factory] Problems with hp deskjet 649c
Hi to all, I'm new of this list, and i decide to subscrive here because I have some problems. I have installed openSUSE 10.2 beta 2 yesterday, it's all ok, yast is too much faster than the 10.1, but my printer ( a Hp Deskjet 640c) doesn't work with it. I try to configure printer with suitable module in YaST, and it showed to me a message, on my system there isn't package cups-drivers-stp , then this I went immediately to looked in YaST package manager, is true this package is not relased for this version, infact it isn't in the internet installation repository of factory too, now I ask to you, what I can do? Vincenzo P.S.:I'm sorry for my english, if is wrong, but i'm 14 and i'm italian, :-)
