Re: [openthinclient-user] Localboot not working

2012-08-08 Thread Klammer Ludwig
Hello,

Thanks for your answer!

I have to be honest, maybe you know that picture of a dog in a scientists coat,
sitting infront of some chemicals and written into the picture with big fat
letters "I have no idea what i'm doing"? And in a few points that's exactly how
i feel right now ;)

@Andreas Schneider
That's exactly what i want, a local OS installation. In case of a missing
connection to the OTC Server we want the clients to be able to boot, and a
faster boot would always be good ;) PXE boot process is working without any
problems. How do i manage to find out wich networkadapter is built in?

Some of the problems could be solved or at least located. The problems with the
slow screen refresh rate is caused by limitations of the RDP protocol, so we
have to live with that. Despite that we want our clients to boot independent
and even if our internet connection is down.

The problem while booting after localboot installation ([numbers] usb 2-1: USB
disconnect, address 3...) seems to be solved, i just deleted the existing
localboot application and created+configured it new. Now it seems like I could
get a few steps further but my target is still not reached:

After running my "new" localboot installation my client starts but stops after
a while, showing this as last line:
IP-Config:eth0 hardware address bl:ah:bl:ah:bl:ah mtu 1500 DHCP RARP

I tried to solve this by unplugging it from network and reconnect it to search
for DHCP again, but it only results in two lines:

[numbers] r8169: eth0: link down
[other numbers] r8169: eth0: link down

Yes, twice "link down".

Any ideas?

Hi Ludwig,

I am not sure about what you will make working?
Localboot = Booting without PXE
Localboot = OTCOS is installed on local Drive

Normaly you want this only if your networkconnection is very slow (<10 MB) to
speedup booting
Localboot does not support the same networkdrivers like PXE one... i think

Does the "PXE Booting" working correct..
What networkadapter has your Lenovo?

Please help me, I'm glad about every single hint..!

[openthinclient-user] Localboot Problem

2011-01-26 Thread Gernot Stadlwieser
Hy Guys,

i have a serious problem regarding localboot:

i'm using openthinclient v 1.0 and the latest localboot plugin.

Everything is set to default settings.

Usually, we boot from network, log in as Administrator, and choose
install to local disk (path /dev/sda).

Everything works fine and all data is installed on local cf card!

After restarting the machine and boot from local media, the pc boots
well until starting the script local-bottom and hangs there for hours.

After a few minutes we see the console screen and there stands also
IP-Config eth0 hardware ... but nothing happens!

IP Configuration for Clients is set to dhcp.

Thanks for helping us

Kind regards

Stadlwieser Gernot

Hi again Martin,

Is there any update or advise on what might be going wrong in my attempt
with LocalBoot.

What is the error message (upon successfull login) actually says. Where
should I look to solve the problem?

I followed the LocalBoot process very straightforward and assumed i would be
able to get a desktop that will be accessible upon login.

With the help of google translator, i translated to something like no space
in user's profile or something.
But that can't be the issue as there are plenty of space in the CF card.

Would appreciate if You can shed some light on this.

all the best!

Re: [openthinclient-user] [Openthinclient-user] localboot

2009-03-24 Thread akeilo cm

Hi Martin,

I too have tried the localboot, learned a bit of german but couldnt get it
to work.

When i add the application to manager, at first i didnt add any settings
(ldap, nfs home etc.) and simply run from administrator account.

One point here. The script will fail to launch if getHostByName() fails to
resolve the name of the thinclient.

Now on manager, i always assign names like Thin1, VMtest2, VIAbasedTest1 to
the thinclients and they dont have DNS resolution for that matter.

To be able to run the script however, i did root in to OTC, create
/etc/hosts file like
127.0.0.1 localhost VIAbasedTest1

saved and re-run the LocalBoot, which format, partition and copy till it
reached the end.

Changed the boot settings to HDD, booted off the CF card with Grub menu
NFS...boot

it stuck at the level where it runs the initscripts.

Being less ignorant, i went back to manager and type in LDAP and NFS root
and home paths
nfs root path: 192.168.1.20/:openthinclient
nfs home:192.168.1.20/:home

and the ldap URL (as per the realm/schema).

rebooted, re-burned the CF and it reached to Login screen.
(imagine a guy using a laptop by the side of the screen running google
translate to make some sense of the screens)
http://www.nabble.com/file/p22693803/load-2.JPG load-2.JPG
http://www.nabble.com/file/p22693803/load-3.JPG load-3.JPG
http://www.nabble.com/file/p22693803/load-4.JPG load-4.JPG
http://www.nabble.com/file/p22693803/load-5-uponLogin.JPG
load-5-uponLogin.JPG
when i try to login with any valid credential, it authenticates then gives
GDM error saying something like "there is no space left in home folder" (bad
bad google translator).
If i give invalid account credentials, it doesnt authenticate so the ldap
and authentication works ok.

I did df -h from terminal, there is space and home has rights for the
authenticated user.

Couldnt figure what might be causing the vague error "not enough space left
in home folder". its a 4gb CF card and plenty space...

Then i started from the begining, this time choose Local instead of NFS from
LocalBoot's setting.
Grub show Local...boot, reached the login screen, upon authentication gave
the same error message.

i've attached the sshots i manage to took via VNC, if its any help to you or
anyone out there to see the progress of the LocalBoot. Tried to take
page-by-page and finally the error message that pops-out upon login.

Would appreciate if you can clarify the settings under LocalBoot (NFS,
Local, ldap, NFShome etc.) even though i have some rough understanding would
be great if you can clarify how its meant to be configured and the use-cases
for NFS or Local selected.

And also what am i missing in config/setup, judging by the sshots (the login
err specifically)?

This is a very inspiring project. Kinda gives one the vision of being able
to use those cheap netbooks in office and take your apps (office, browser,
perhaps wifi connection settings in near guture) offline to an SD-card.
Perfect use-case for staff that travels as well as a clever fall-back system
if its improved intelligently.

Enabling the wireless card, bluetooth in netbooks along with office apps and
some local storage...
Pretty cool and neat use-case that would be.

Looks really good even though i probably only understood 40% of it due to
language barrier.

All the best.

Re: [openthinclient-user] localboot

2009-03-23 Thread Gene Cooper
Hi Martin,

I just did a quickie test of the localboot package without success.

The script seemed to run to completion and without errors. I say 'seemed'
because I don't understand German and the script output is in German.

Upon reboot, there is a GRUB menu and the system attempts to boot locally.
However it gets to a certain point (just after it runs
/scripts/nfs-premount) and stops with no obvious error messages. X never
starts. The problem, I think, is _after_ the nfs-premount script as it
says "Done."

Please note: It DID successfully boot X exactly ONCE, so it must be close...

I would love to help troubleshoot this package as I think it will fill a
necessary niche. I might be of more assistance if it were in English...sorry.

Thanks very much,

G

[openthinclient-user] localboot

2009-03-18 Thread Martin Kreiner
hi,

it seems there are some testers out there willing to destroy all data on there
flash devices ;-). there you go:

i just uploaded the package "localboot" to unstable.
this package is still buggy and might be rewritten but should work for compact
flashes (USB-sticks are untested).

it basically prepares the device and copies files and some settings to disk.
you still need at least the openthinclient ldap server running for fetching
configuration data if you boot locally.

so if you want to do some localboot tests:

- uncomment the manager-unstable line in:
...\openthinclient\server\default\data\nfs\root\etc\sources.list
and save file
- start the openthinclient manager, search for updates and install package
"localboot"
- add and configure the localboot application
- assign it to "administrator" (the only user that is able to execute it)
- start a thin client (via PXE), login as administrator and execute the
application
- cross your fingers ;-)
- reboot thin client and change BIOS or PXE-ROM settings to boot from local
devices

the default configuration prepares the thin client to boot without PXE/TFTP.
"system data -> local" will copy all installed packages to the local device.
you can not write to the device if you did a local boot, you have to switch to
PXE boot to rewrite the device.

have fun,
martin
