*SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT JOB FAMILY OVERVIEW*

*Software Configuration Management Engineers* are Software Engineers who
specialize in developing and managing the processes, tools and libraries
used to automate the generation of integrated applications from diverse
modules of software code. SCM Engineers work as partners with development
teams to help ensure architectural components and products are designed to
be quickly and easily built, deployed, and maintained. SCM engineers
provide services in support of our growth strategy by developing and
implementing solutions that speed product delivery while providing the
backbone of necessary controls.

SCM Engineers establish processes to manage code, including enforcing the
criteria established with QA to control when code can be promoted, the
Build philosophies for a project (which they establish) and the branching
and labeling strategies. They design, develop, configure and manage SCM
tools and write scripts to make the Build process as automated as possible,
including the execution of test programs to check for compatibility in
different environments (such as internationalization / localization) and
notifications that can provide appropriate debugging information when there
are problems.

SCM Engineers provide tools, guidelines and best practices to Software
Engineers (SWE) so that the engineers can first execute local Builds to
test their own code. They work with project teams to determine an
appropriate Build schedule, receive the source code from multiple sources
(developers, 3rd parties) and initiate and manage the Build and packaging
process to compile and assemble software. When problems occur in the
Build, they identify the issues and work with the developers to analyze the
causes of the problem. Once software has been released, SCM Engineers
maintain release libraries, provide information about the location of code
to enable patches and recreate Builds as required.
