RE: select from dual?

2001-11-15 Thread Santosh Varma

i think the following code should work ->

select 30,'where name in (''NAME1'',''NAME2'')' || ' ;' from dual;

the character fields should be seperated by double quotes instead of single.

Move data from Oracle into Access

2001-11-15 Thread Daiminger, Helmut
Title: Move data from Oracle into Access

Hi!

What would be the easiest way to dump out an Oracle table and move it into Access? (approx. 100,000 rows) No flaming, please... ;)

I assume that there is no tool for Access to read Oracle dmp-files, right?

Is spooling it out into an ASCII file (blanks or comma-seperated) the only way? I just need a single table (no refs or the like).

Any ideas?

This is 8.1.7 on Solaris.

Thanks,
Helmut

Re: Configuring for Online Redo Logfiles

2001-11-15 Thread Connor McDonald

An unmirrored disk will run faster (with respect to
writes) than a mirrored one (not twice as fast since
writes on a mirror are typically done in parallel).
Then again - now you've got an unmirrored redo
log...not a good idea. To get around this, you'd need
to duplex it through Oracle - which pretty much gets
you back to a "mirrored" redo log.

RE: Sql question - please reply fast

2001-11-15 Thread Iulian . ILIES

Can you tell us what the last word in the field value mean (except 'Info
missing' and 'Bad info')
I mean is there a rule that those T, S1 does respect?
Something like this:
- first character is a letter and in this set of values ('S', 'T' etc)
- the rest are digits
etc.
Try to find out a pattern and let us know, may be we can help you out.

ORAxxxx & trace files.

2001-11-15 Thread Mark Leith

Hi list,

Does anybody have a good list of all the ORA errors that will cause a trace
file to be generated? We have a user of our tools that wants to monitor for
any trace files/dumps being generated. I can think of two ways:

1) monitor the alert log as above for specific errors
2) monitor the directories that these are generated in (bdump/cdump etc.)
for any new files generated in the timeframe..

Anybody already doing this - or have any scripts to save me re-inventing the
wheel?

Cheers

Mark

From contractor rates I would say lower in Scotland and London could range
  from £35-55K.
Banks , city instititution may pay more but I am sure it is
  very hard getting in there.
As for transport I have worked in Nottingham 6 months ago (for
Logica) and I don't see the public transport system there any better than
Leeds,Manchester,London etc. They are all pretty poor. Unfortunately the
underlying transport infrastructure has been left underfunded and badly
  managed for much too long.

Tricky Query

2001-11-15 Thread Swajit Satam

Hi All,

I am working on a application in which I have to find the Min and Max time of the user
session. Since there will be multiple records for a single session with the
overlapping time. the example data is as foll.

MMCR_APPNO MMCR_START_TIME MMCR_END_TIME
-- --
110 30
120 40
140 45
110 50

160 80
170 90
165100

1 110120
1 105140

expected result

MMCR_APPNO MMCR_START_TIME MMCR_END_TIME
-- --
110 50
160100
1 105140

the comparision has to be done on end time not lying between starttime and endtime of
the next record if it does then the user belong to same session

cheers
Swajit

RE: Move data from Oracle into Access

2001-11-15 Thread Mark Leith
Title: Move data from Oracle into Access

Helmut,

You
can "import" the table via an ODBC link.

Make
sure that you have an ODBC datasource set up with Micro$ofts ODBC driver for
Oracle for the Oracle instance, open up your Access "database window" then from
your File menu choose "Get External Data/Import" you will be faced with a normal
select file menu, down in the box "Files of type" choose ODBC Databases. Set up
your connection accordingly and away you go. Another alternative is just to link
to the table via ODBC (depending on what you want to do with the access
database, this will just get the data from Oracle as and when requested, and you
don't have to worry about synchronising or anything), or as you said, export to
a comma delimited file, then import in much the same way as above, just choosing
a different "File of type".

HTH

Mark

P.S. I
seem to remember there being a fairly comprehensive section on this in the
access help files.. Maybe they could help describe it a little better than
I..;)

P.P.S.
Flaming? How could we flame such a robust "RDBMS"! The shear joy of working with
access that I get EVERY DAY doesn't warrant FLAMING! ;P No sir.. Not from me...
(Seriously though - 100,000 in an Access table is really
nothing..)

  Hi!
What would be the easiest way to dump out an Oracle table and
move it into Access? (approx. 100,000 rows) No flaming, please...
;)
I assume that there is no tool for Access to read Oracle
  dmp-files, right?
Is spooling it out into an ASCII file (blanks or
comma-seperated) the only way? I just need a single table (no refs or the
  like).
  Any ideas?
  This is 8.1.7 on Solaris.

RE: Connecting 8.0 to 8.1

2001-11-15 Thread Mark Leith

There is something wrong with your host address.. If I were you I would
check the HOST value in your TNSNAMES.ora, and make sure the IP is correct.
Then, change the HOST values in your LISTENER.ora to use the IP address as
well instead of the host names.

Also, do you have the GLOBAL_NAMES parameter set to true in your initSID.ora
file? If it's set to false, then you can loose the :

 (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ORANGE**.acn032hq**)

bit, and keep it like this:

 (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ORANGE)

Try these out:

---tnsnames---

ORANGE.WORLD =
  (DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 123.456.798.101)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORANGE))
  )

--

---listener---

LISTENER =
  (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
  (ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
  )
  (ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 123.456.798.101)(PORT = 1521))
  )
)
(DESCRIPTION =
  (PROTOCOL_STACK =
(PRESENTATION = GIOP)
(SESSION = RAW)
  )
  (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 123.456.798.101)(PORT = 2481))

Forgive me if this is a RTFM question - I have not been able to find the
right bit of the FM.

Can someone please tell me how to Net8 connect an 8.0 NT client to an 8.1
Linux server.

Everything was working fine until a second Oracle instance was installed on
the server. I now get

ERROR:
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

My tnsnames.ora looks like this...

ORANGE.WORLD =
  (DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 123.456.798.101)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORANGE))
  )

The server listener.ora looks like this

# LISTENER.ORA Network Configuration File:
/opt/oracle/product/8.1.7/network/admin/listener.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

LISTENER =
  (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
  (ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
  )
  (ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = abc123defghi)(PORT = 1521))
  )
)
(DESCRIPTION =
  (PROTOCOL_STACK =
(PRESENTATION = GIOP)
(SESSION = RAW)
  )
  (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = abc123defghi)(PORT = 2481))
)
  )

SID_LIST_LISTENER =
  (SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
  (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
  (ORACLE_HOME = /opt/oracle/product/8.1.7)
  (PROGRAM = extproc)
)
(SID_DESC =

  (ORACLE_HOME = /opt/oracle/product/8.1.7)
  (SID_NAME = TEST)

(SID_DESC =
  (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ORANGE.acn032hq)
  (ORACLE_HOME = /opt/oracle/product/8.1.7)

I anonymised the data (obviously)

Many thanks to anyone who understands this stuff.

RE: Connecting 8.0 to 8.1

2001-11-15 Thread Farnsworth, Dave

You might have install the 8.1 client. I may be wrong but I think with the
8.1 client you can connect to 8.1 and any version lower but with the 8.0
client you cannot connect to a higher version. If you don't have the 8.1
client CD you can download the client at Oracle's site.

RE: ORAxxxx & trace files.

2001-11-15 Thread Hallas John
Title: RE: ORA & trace files.

Hi Mark,

I wrote the following bit of code (not good enough to call a script!) to check our alert log for deadlock trace files

awk -f j.awk -v DateStr="Nov" -v SearchStr="info" alert.log > a.lis

numberOfLines=`grep info a.lis |wc -l`
if  [ $numberOfLines -gt 0 ]
then

cat a.lis|mailx -s "Trace files detected" [EMAIL PROTECTED]

else
cat a.lis|mailx -s "No problems" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
fi

output looks something like this

Mon Nov 05 10:04:09 2001 ORA-00060: Deadlock detected. More info in file e:\ora.
Mon Nov 05 11:10:28 2001 ORA-00060: Deadlock detected. More info in file e:\ora.
Mon Nov 05 11:10:38 2001 ORA-00060: Deadlock detected. More info in file e:\ora.
Mon Nov 05 11:46:55 2001 ORA-00060: Deadlock detected. More info in file e:\ora.

Not perfect but almost there. Searching for Nov or Dec etc and the word info and then pulling the next line out

a.awk looks like

$2==DateStr{ oldline=$0
    getline
    if (match($0,SearchStr) >0){
    print oldline,$0
    }
}

I am sure there will be better examples provided but at least I wrote this myself and I am learning from it. It still needs something doing with the date. I am trying to translate this into a perl script as well but even less progress on that.

John

Anybody already doing this - or have any scripts to save me re-inventing the
wheel?

Cheers

1) Mirrored Redo Logs WRITES may have an Overhead of 15-20 %
EXCERPT from Gaja's Doc "One of the common myths with mirroring, is that
it takes "twice as long" to write. But in many performance measurements
and benchmarks, the overhead has been observed to be around 15-20%."

2) Mirrored Redo Logs READS are Twice as Fast than NON-Mirrored

Considering BOTH the Above to POINTS , FINALLY Strictly w.r.t.
performance of Online Redo Logs , WITHOUT any Consideration for Data

SqlServer2000, Oracle9i and DB2. It's very handy if your in a

After reviewing the document it was clear to us Enterprise Edition was

RE: CLOB datatype

2001-11-15 Thread Jack C. Applewhite

Rick,

CLOBs been bery bery good to me. ;-)(8.1.6 on Win2k)

We collect 50,000 - 200,000 documents per day and store them in out-of-line
CLOBs in a partitioned table. The CLOB column has an interMedia Text index
on it, which allows us to query up to about 12 million documents with great
performance.

CLOBs can be stored in separate segments from the "regular" data, allowing
better storage and access control. CLOBs can be easily manipulated with the
DBMS_LOB package. They suffer from none of the many problems caused by LONG
columns.

They're GRREAT!

Does anyone have any opinions on using CLOB/NCLOB datatypes in Oracle? I
am running 8.1.7.2 on Solaris.
Oracle Docs state that CLOBs can handle up to 4 Gig. Are there any gotchas
by using CLOBs?

Thanks for any information,

Re: Configuring for Online Redo Logfiles

2001-11-15 Thread Edward Shevtsov

Hi Vivek,

If I didn't worry about data safety I would choose redo logs on dedicated
single disks.
The reason is that usually the speed of LGWR's writes is more important for
performance compared with speed of ARCH's reads.

Re:Mass Storage/Network Stuff

2001-11-15 Thread dgoulet

Ed,

The answer is yes and no, or more accurately it depends. First off there
are only two storage vendors, to my knowledge, certified by Oracle for this.
They are Net Appliance and EMC. The reason is that they have software and
hardware that 'guarantees' to get the data from the buffers to the drives.
Secondly you need absolutely dedicated TCP/IP connectivity between the computer
and the storage array. Look at it as replacing scsi adapters and cables with
network cards and cables.

Are there any problems running Oracle on one box, and pointing the database
files to a mass storage network device (ie. a disk array or some external
storage solution). In other words, will Oracle run using network
addressable storage? I'm assuming this is not a difficult thing to do, but
I would love to hear some war stories.

Any configuration or specific recommendations on how to do this? Unix/NT an
issue?

Best,

RE: Operating Systems

2001-11-15 Thread Mercadante, Thomas F

All,

Interesting comments regarding OS selection. Of course, this has been
covered in the past at great length.

Let me add my 2 cents.

NT is a very viable option if it is being administered by a competent NT
Admin who does not treat the box like a home desktop.

I have been working on NT boxes for two years now, and have seen the worst
and best it has to offer. The worst is when it is not respected as a true
operating system. The best is when it is managed carefully and with great
fore-thought.

I have not experienced *any* of the comments made in this thread - like
rebooting every so often. I have very stable, powerfull machines that are
being managed by the best NT admins I have every seen, and they are
performing very nicely, thank you.

In my opinion, they are a viable platform solution.

2001-11-15 Thread Mark Leith

At last! Somebody who speaks my language!

The biggest problem I have found with NT is when people insist on adding
this and that and that over there, add this piece of software that
overwrites this .dll but hasn't been properly tested.. Poor drivers etc..

Grab an Intel system, fresh off the press.. Install Oracle, set up your
network card, set up your database, set up security, open to the network -
LEAVE IT ALONE.. you got yourself a pretty damn stable system..

We have a Win2K system here that is used for file storage.. It has two HDs,
one with the OS, the other with all files & backups shared across a network.
I have NEVER had to reboot this system! Oh sorry I did ONCE when I had to
move it's location.

Oracle express errors

2001-11-15 Thread Zenor, Patty

Hi All,
I have a customer that is getting the following errors when attempting to
connect to a Folder in Oracle Express Server.
Error #7219 in XPCUBE: Informational (0100): Reset to default
CAUSESB selection
Error #7218 in XPCUBE: informational (0100): No CAUSESB values in
status.

They also get the following error when attempting to connect to another
Folder in express server.
Error #31701 in GRAPHCC.DLL: Non-fatal (0300): Wait or No-Hit-Test
state in effect

These errors are not show stoppers but have just recently been showing up
according to the client. I know very little about Oracle Express Server and
have not been able to find any error messages that will give me any clue as
to what might be the problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
System Information: Sun Solaris: 2.6
  Oracle: 8.1.6.3.0
  Express Server: 6.1
Thanks!

Hi lists,

We can see users password using

ps -ef |grep sqlplus

(if we run a job using sqlplus scott/tiger @${runfile} ).

To prevent this we can run our code

sqlplus -s

Re: Operating Systems

2001-11-15 Thread Jan Pruner

Hmm, I'm not trying to start flamewar!

I was hired 3 years ago and the company has 3 databases on MS SQL (every
about 1GB).
Today we have * in 1 Oracle db running on Linux.

And now.
I have done an import daemon from pure text files (replication between
servers) in C++.
On NTFS import into MS SQL - 3 inserts / second.
On ext2 import into Oracle - 12 inserts / second.

The same HW (but on Linux is RAID 10!!!).

Yes, NT is nice with 5 or 20 people. I know it and I'm using it so.

Need help rewriting SQL with TRUNC function

2001-11-15 Thread Cherie_Machler

I think that the following statement is keeping this application from using
an index in my cost-based execution plan. This is an 8.0.4 database so I
don't have the option of creating a function-based index.

I'm not that great with SQL. Can anyone help me rewrite this statement so
that I don't need to use the TRUNC function on this column in blue?

  (trunc(sysdate) - trunc(erh.arrival_dt)) >= 7 AND

Oracle Expert and FK indexes

Does someone know why the Oracle Expert would recommend dropping indexes on
FK columns?

Maybe it calculates there is a low likelihood of the table being locked

I thought it was a good idea to have indexes on FK columns... this is an old
7.3.4.5. database.

RE: Disk Layout Document

2001-11-15 Thread Kimberly Smith

Every time they ask for a new database I try that 22 disk thing
also. I also settle for 6 mount points (not 6 disks). Its still
fun to try though. Especially when we hire new people.

the very first time I ever saw Kevin present, he was talking about
that. I went out and bought the DBA Handbook and came home to the
operations people saying "I need 22 disks"

when they picked themselves up off the floor I said "okay, I can get
away with 17"

again, I waited until they stopped laughing and said "can I get 9?"

I settled for 6

then I kept reading the book and emailing kevin with the typos I would
find. And that dear ones, is how Kevin Loney and I met and became
friends.

He got his revenge for my bothering him though -- he got me to
co-author a book :)

To prevent this we can run our code

Sujatha,

Yes it will try to create them, but John's point is that if you create the
database/tablespaces before you import then the tablespaces will already
exist. The import will generate errors on the tablespace create steps then
move on to schema & object import steps.

RE: Operating Systems

2001-11-15 Thread Kimberly Smith

I can't argue with that one. NT does have its place. If its not a critical
application and you only need a predetermined amount of users to access
it, its a pretty cheap way to get a very expensive database up. Its all
a matter of economics.

However, then you have 6 million NT servers cause you really can only have
one
application on it or they don't play so nice. As opposed to one nice
kick-ass HPUX server (or two in my case as we Service Guard them). OK, so
I have more then two but to put what I have on Unix on NT would mean a whole
new data center.

I guess that on Intel platform you don't have other choice than Linux and
Oracle fo Linux.

Database on NT = highway to hell and you cruise at high speed

RE: Mass Storage/Network Stuff

2001-11-15 Thread Johnston, Tim

Ed...

Make sure you read the last couple lines of Dick's email carefully... He
is absolutely correct... There is a big difference between being certified
by Oracle and being certified by Oracle USING THE SUPPORTED CONFIGURATION...
This is a bit of a touchy subject for me since I had several go arounds with
a customer using NetApp recently... When our PS folks arrived on site, the
database server was connected to the box over the LAN! Performance was
horrible... It took about two hours just to issue the CREATE DATABASE
statement... The customers opinion was "The NetApp filer is supported by
Oracle... You must be doing something wrong..." We finally got it straight
a few days later and performance has been much better... But, then we went
to install it into production... The PS guys walked in and checked things
out... It looked good... This time they got the dedicated connectivity
correct and their sysadmins said we were all set... They started the
install and again it was slow... Come to find out that even though it was a
dedicated connection, they had it set at 10 Megabit!!! Just some words of
warning to be careful... Make sure you understand what exactly the
supported config is and spec it that way from day one...

Ed,

The answer is yes and no, or more accurately it depends. First off
there
are only two storage vendors, to my knowledge, certified by Oracle for this.

They are Net Appliance and EMC. The reason is that they have software and
hardware that 'guarantees' to get the data from the buffers to the drives.
Secondly you need absolutely dedicated TCP/IP connectivity between the
computer
and the storage array. Look at it as replacing scsi adapters and cables
with
network cards and cables.

Unix/NT an
issue?

Best,

Ed

Parsing free-form text for InterMedia indexing

2001-11-15 Thread Jesse, Rich

Hi all,

I've been struggling with trying to provide our users with a quick text
search. InterMedia's doing OK, but I'm having trouble setting it up because
the text I'm searching is free-form data entered by several users over the
span of years. In other words, it's a word-jumble.

For example, one indexed string might contain "25 PIN", while another
contains "25PIN", but I need to make sure that both come up in a query
without needing the user to know to enter for multiple scenarios. How can
that be indexed in IM? I think I want to have digits as separators, but not
in words that are only digits, e.g. I don't want "123456" to be indexed as
"1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6".

I'm also having other problems with volumninous printjoins, but I'll tackle
one problem at a time. :)

Thx!

erh.arrival_dt <= trunc(sysdate) - 7 should give exactly the same result, even without
the second trunc().
Try a count(*) with both versions if you have any doubt.

RE: Operating Systems

2001-11-15 Thread Johnston, Tim

Well... I figured I'd put my $0.02 in... I have had some exposure to NT...
As a matter of fact, I did Oracle on NT at a dot com for about a year...
And to tell you the truth, I hated it... But, I really gave it a honest
chance... The first couple of places where I had NT exposure were Unix
shops... There was an intense dislike of NT because it was not Unix...
But, when I went to the dot com, it was an NT only shop... We discussed
moving to Unix for the DB server at a future date but it NT to start... So,
I worked with it... I surfed the web looking for tips and tricks... And you
want to know why I hate it? I hate it for the exact reasons you guys say it
can work well... I agree, with competent NT admins and intelligent choices
about what gets installed, NT can be a viable database OS... But, that is
the exact problem... I have yet to find a company that views NT as an
operating system that needs "careful management"... Everywhere I have been,
the NT management has been done by either desktop support people or totally
unqualified admins... They never want to "solve" the problem... They just
want to reboot... Until companies put the same kind of support into NT that
they put into their Unix systems, this will be the case... Ditto for the
hardware... Getting the average NT admin to investigate a hardware issue is
like pulling teeth...

Tim

PS - I also hated the limitations of the scripting... I was not allowed to
install any third party apps on the production server... Which meant I had
to do everything with .bat files and the at scheduler... I made it work...
But it is definitely not fun...

I guess that on Intel platform you don't have other choice than Linux and
Oracle fo Linux.

Database on NT = highway to hell and you cruise at high speed

I think that the following statement is keeping this application from using
an index in my cost-based execution plan. This is an 8.0.4 database so I
don't have the option of creating a function-based index.

I'm not that great with SQL. Can anyone help me rewrite this statement so
that I don't need to use the TRUNC function on this column in blue?

  (trunc(sysdate) - trunc(erh.arrival_dt)) >= 7 AND

The simplified version:
Connect access to oracle using ODBC and select from the oracle tables
into access tables.

Hi lists,

We can see users password using

ps -ef |grep sqlplus

(if we run a job using sqlplus scott/tiger @${runfile} ).

To prevent this we can run our code

sqlplus -s

Tim,

Definitely. We're just researching options right now. I was
certain we'd end up with something working over a fiber card
or 1000 Megabit NIC of some kind.

Thanks,

Ed

Re: Failures in creating Oracle database file.

2001-11-15 Thread Jesse W. Asher

Thanks for all the replies - I'm not ignoring them. I'm doing some
testing now to see what is going on. I'm trying out Oracle 9i since it
appears that this may be related to how Oracle was compiled and an
innate limitation to Oracle in this case. I should know today if this
is the case and will let everyone know

accessing reports processed by the reports server

2001-11-15 Thread Jeffrey Beckstrom

We are a two node install of Oracle Apps 11i all on NT.  The question
though is really with the reports server and the web server being on separate
nodes.  We are an apps 11i two node install.

From the apps, we are able to submit a business intelligence report to the
report server.  However, the browser never returns.  Continually tries
to open a page forever.  Oracle's current thought is that since the web
server and report server are on different nodes, the browser could not access
it.  Therefore, changed the mapping for the apps "cache" to point to the
database server and run apache as a user.  If enter the URL directly of
where the report is in the database server's file system cache, can now view
it.  However, the apps still hangs.  If try to access the report from
the "showjobs" screen, it hangs as well.  Almost like web server asking the
report server for the report but never gets a response??

This has been going on for a few weeks now and getting no where.  Any
help greatly appreciated.

RE: Disk Layout Document

2001-11-15 Thread Jesse, Rich

After many DB copies, loads, reloads, upgrades, etc., I've decided that the
22-disk layout just doesn't work for us. With only two 4-way stripe sets,
we get vastly superior I/O thruput that more than compensates for any
contention on any of the stripes.

Yes, yes, I understand that with mirroring the total drive count is 16. But
since this is only a volatile test system there's no need for mirroring,
archiving, or duplexing for recovery. With another stripe/mirror (RAID 10
or 0+1 -- no need to get back to that discussion) of 6 or 8 drives total for
the archiving and maybe a duplexed controlfile, I still say that setup will
smoke an Oracle-sanctioned Kevin Loney 22-disk layout. At least it does for
our DB and environment.

Think about it: If a single drive housing a single datafile can pop 100-200
I/Os/sec, that same datafile on a 4-way stripe can hit in the thousands
(w/caching and tuning). Of course, mutiply this by several datafiles,
redos, controlfiles, and you've got a really fun physical layout project to
minimize contention at peak operating times.

Hey, it can't work for everyone. But some may see the huge performance
advantage we've seen by using RAID instead of single drives for physical DB
layout.

Just my $.02
