CROSS TAB QUERY
Hi Gurus, I have a table Monthly_Stats as below: MONTH VARCHAR2(20), ERLANG NUMBER(7,2) CONGNUMBER(5,2) . . CSETUP NUMBER(5,2) A record is inserted in this table every end of month. I would like to write an SQL query to produce output below: MONTH JAN FEB MAR APR MAY . . . DEC ERLANG 777 999 98 66 87 999 CONG9 6 3 4 2 4 CSETUP . . . I do not know the number of months in advance, i.e. if the table has 3 months (JAN, FEB, MAR), these are the only months I need in the report. Any suggestions?? RE: Alternatives to Pathworks?
Title: RE: Alternatives to Pathworks? Marc, What transport protocol are you using at the moment if not TCP, Decnet I presume The 2 things that spring to mind are 1) Look at using Samba. That certainly works on VMS and allows file movement between VMS,Unix and NT. I have seen it grab a lot of CPU on VMS systems and I think it requires restarting frequently but that can all be scripted 2) What limits are reached on the VMS server. I cannot imagine UCX or whatever they call it now (services for TCP possibly) radically changing resource usage. RE: OEM for Personal Edition cannot connect
Title: RE: OEM for Personal Edition cannot connect The management server is the service that communicates between(?) the Intelligent Agent, and the OEM client console. It runs as a service in the background under the NT/2000 services or something like that under 98.. Never used it on 98 before - my recommendation is to *never* run tools of this sort on a 9x platform as the thread management is simply not up to scratch to run the process that these tools like to spawn.. First thing to check is that the service is actually running in background. If so then check the status at a command prompt: oemctrl status oms If not then issue: oemstrl start oms or to start as a background process: oemctrl start oms You could also check the Management Servers logs: OEM_HOME\sysman\log\oms.log If you have any further errors in here (or if you are on NT check the Event Log) then act upon these errors or send them out to the list.. RE: Analyze only latest partition
Hi Connor Thanq for responding. In dba_tab_partitions there is no such column like partition_id, and I would like to generate a list at schema level for each table. That means, this script should capture the latest (last) partitions for each table (if it is partitioned) for a given schema. Is there a way? I tried with the following query. But there is some bug in that. It is not capturing the last partition (in a whole database): select object_name,owner ,subobject_name from dba_objects where data_object_id in (select data_object_id from dba_objects where created in(select max(created) from dba_objects ) and data_object_id is not null); Can anybody debug this.? Well said Mark. David, you could also re-able the constraint 'novalidate' if you wanted to ignore the validity of any new input. RE: Oracle/UNIX vs. Oracle/NT
Here are my comments, speaking from personal experience as an Oracle DBA for 3 years on Tru64 UNIX and NT databases. I am also doubling as the NT administrator now. There is another Oracle DBA (more experienced than me), and there are 3 UNIX system administrators. 10 NT servers (2 old OWS 3.0.1.1., 2 iAs 9i, 1 used to have 5 7.3.4.4. instances on it, one has 3 8.1.7. instances on it), with 5 Digital (sorry, Compaq) Tru64 UNIX servers, with 1-3 instances on them). This is my perception at this point. Microsoft marketing is very strong. Managers use Windows9x/ME, so they think WindowsNT/2000 is easy too. Heck they know little about computers and they can run MS Office and Outlook no problem, imagine what the techies downstairs could do with the server OS from Microsoft! Most managers don't use computers - they need the latest laptops etc. for office status purposes, but they don't use them for much more than running MS Office and Outlook. They read ComputerWorld and they see PC Magazine and PC World in the pharmacies, that's about it. They also notice that none of the UNIX vendors ever advertise on TV (what's up with that?). The people who decide where to spend the money are not the people who have to work with the systems. In a good shop they would consult the people below, but often they end up deciding first and arguing (or delaying purchase indefinitely) if the techies down below question their decision). Do they take into account replacing all their servers to keep NT/2000 running? I imagine their existing machines can't run NT or Windows2000. The point someone else made about training is a valid one, management may be thinking that training is not required at all for NT because it's a Windows OS and the techies can do anything, or that MCSEs are a dime a dozen now so staff costs will be lower. Problem is, they will need more staff to keep the NT servers going than for an equivalent number of UNIX machines - once a UNIX box runs, it runs reliably. UNIX machines are not affected by the likes of NIMDA, BackOrifice and other tools out there. Most hackers don't have grudges against UNIX systems, but they certainly do against Microsoft. Have you updated your virus files lately? If using McAfee, is your engine up to date? Have you checked your Event Viewer security log? Has auditing even been enabled on your system? You realize that auditing is shut off by default on NT. (also not taught in the NT4 MCSE classes). Anyone with a copy of a server's ERD can crack the passwords of all the user accounts that server has seen since the OS was installed. If someone gets the ERD from your BDC or PDC, you are royally screwed. How many ERDs are lying around in your computer room? Do contractors / term / casual employees ever go in there, and do any of them have any reason to be unhappy with the way your company is treating them? If one ERD is missing, how long will it take for anyone to notice? The attitude that NT is just Windows doesn't help security at all, the OS has to be taken seriously. If your machines have to be secure, get ready to spend time doing it. More time than if it was a UNIX host. Web servers should use something other than IIS, IIS is popular because... it's freeware. The Gardner Group earlier this year advised people not to use IIS, because it is not secure. iAS went with Apache on Windows, which is a bit of an oxymoron, Apache should be running on UNIX. iAS made the right decision, but it illustrates that the OS ends up running a UNIX web server ported to NT. Like it is used to run a UNIX-based database (Oracle) on NT. Why not just use UNIX? To do remote admin, they will have to purchase a 3rd party tool like PC Duo if they are using NT. NT assumes an administrator would be at the server. You can't telnet to NT systems because NT behaves like a home operating system, it assumes you are sitting at the machine (may be possible with Windows2000, not sure). You can purchase 3rd party telnet software, but you won't have access to the desktop. Scripting on NT is not as user-friendly as it is in UNIX. Retrieve from archives those old DOS scripting books. NT and Windows2000 offer more commands, but at the core the scripting is still the same. The AT command used to run scripts on schedule in NT 4.0 is 99.9% reliable, but not 100% reliable. I ended up having to install a 3rd party utility called crontab for Windows to keep my backup scripts running reliably. The time clock keeps slipping back, esp. if your CPU is busy. So you will have to hook up the machine to a time server somewhere. Every time there is a new version, you have to purchase it and upgrade the hardware. Much of your 3rd party and your in-house applications will have to be ported to the new version. I don't know if this is the case with UNIX variants. NT carries along with it a huge kernel, and a thick layer of graphics on top of it. To make all that work at a speed equivalent to UNIX, it

Audit vs Logminer
8i Database, W2K server. Apps team looking for audit trail functionality. I've outlined the pros and cons of Oracle Audit vs using Logminer to extract audit info from archived redo logs as below: - Archiving of Redo Logs will be carried out in any case. - All required auditing data as far as I can determine would be captured in redo logs. - Using Logminer to investigate them looks like it would be more difficult than using Oracles Auditing features. - Introducing Oracle Auditing has limited functionality and has a performance overhead. - Oracle auditing would require programming of triggers to capture before and after values which in turn has another potential performance hit. - Oracle audit data needs to be monitored and requires additional management time. I've not used Oracle Auditing or Logminer so the above is based upon some reading I've done. If I've missed any important points please give me feedback on same. Also anyone any opinions, or better still experience, as to which is better from performance POV. - Sean O' Neill Organon (Ireland) Ltd. Oracle Finacials and pdf report generation
Hi! Unfortunately or maybe fortunately :-)? this is a problem of my friend, no my own, so I don't know more details, at least now. It is following: There are two servers running Oracle Financials production and test, they both produces reports in pdf format. And the problem is that test database generates font names all in lowercase and of course Acrobat reader doesn't understand these fonts and replaces them with default ones. When font names are changed to appropriate case (using some text editor) all is OK. In the same time in the production database all is OK, reports are generated correctly. Their skills are too limited to find any differences. Where could be problem? Any ideas? If you need more details let me know. Re: Oracle8i on WinNT - renaming disc drives
Sonja, It is a complicated process to rename disk drives in the Oracle environment. Depending in the drives that Oracle uses and what are changes(renamed) could really cause you frustration. The initxxx.ora lists the current location of the controlfiles, logfiles, dump dirs, trace dirs, etc. You will have to startup the database (if it can find the controlfile) and alter database rename .. to .. for each of the effected datafiles. RE: Connection question?
Title: RE: Connection question? Hi Deepak Here's what the doco says The Bequeath protocol glossary.htm enables clients that exist on the same machine as the server to retrieve information from the database without using the listener. The Bequeath protocol internally spawns a dedicated server process for each client applications. In a sense, it does the same operation that a remote network listener does for your connection, yet locally. Bequeath is used for local connections where an Oracle client application, such as SQL*Plus, communicates with an Oracle server running on the same machine Tell me if I'm wrong but here's my take on it: When I connect from my pc, there's a process on my PC and there's a corresponding process on the database, say on a Unix server. Though the connection was initiated remotely, the process itself on the db server is still a local process that exists to communicate with the database. Am I wrong? Patrice, Thank you very much for the time you spent putting this together. It is VERY informative, and I am keeping it forever! thanks again! Every time there is a new version, you have to purchase it and upgrade the

RE: Oracle8i on WinNT - renaming disc drives
Ron, When you say log files in the init.ora I assume you mean archive log files. (Mr. P. Dantic) Anyway, getting back to the task at hand, a far easier way to do it is to issue a backup controlfile to trace. Change the location of the files in the trace file you have generated, shutdown the DB, move the files to the new locations you have specified in the trace file. Run the trace file you have edited and open your DB. This is a very simplistic explanation of the process but it is foolproof, it is widely documented on the web and in my experience works everytime, I have had to do this many times without any issues. RE: Oracle/UNIX vs. Oracle/NT
I forgot to mention, two years ago I tried to use the NT Performance Monitor to track usage of five Oracle 7.3.4.4. databases on one NT server, and learned that Performance Monitor only lets you monitor one database at once. I don't know if this is still the case with 8i and Win2K, but it tells me that NT wasn't written to track multiple copies of the same program, it was designed to run one copy of each program. RE: Connection question?
Afternoon Lisa, I thought that BEQ and (for example) IPC protocols both used the listener to spawn a server-side process. The difference is in the protocol used in the communication between the remote and local processes. IPC uses Unix Domain Sockets to communicate between the client-side and server-side processes, where BEQ uses Unix pipes. I had assumed that this was why BEQ connections had to be local. This is the view expounded in Note: 1014940.6. If I've got it wrong, it'd be nice to know. Any comments, Gurus? Thanks, Harry Lowes Database Administrator, npower Northern Limited mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- Sent: 28 November 2001 14:00 To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Hi Deepak Here's what the doco says The Bequeath protocol glossary.htm enables clients that exist on the same machine as the server to retrieve information from the database without using the listener. Am I wrong? Assuming this is Unix of some kind: Are the binaries (svrmgrl/sqlplus) in your path ($ORACLE_HOME/bin) and environmental variables set (ie. $ORACLE_HOME)? Is the telnetd daemon running to receive telnet requests (ps -ef | grep telnetd)? Problems connecting with telnet and using svrmgrl or sqlplus from the console are unrelated (separate issues). RE: Script to Disable Constraint, Change Value, then Enable Const
I can see the confusion here. The point is not to let someone enter data that would violate the referential integrity. Let me explain with an example: 1. User wants to update a primary key record in parent table 2. Dependent data exists in a child table so the user gets an error while trying to perform step 1 3. It is necessary to disable the FK constraint in order to update both tables 4. Enable the FK constraint successfully Does that make sense? This is a process we have to do routinely and it has happened in the past that the FK was mistakenly not re-enabled, which allowed illegal data to be loaded later. Thus the need for a script. Kurt Wiegand IBM Global Services Cable Wireless Communications 703 760-3619 Bookmark Fixed font Go to End Doc ID: Note:121371.1 Type: PROBLEM Status: REVIEWED Content Type: TEXT/PLAIN Creation Date: 04-OCT-2000 Last Revision Date: 02-FEB-2001 * This article is being delivered in Draft form and may contain errors. Please use the MetaLink Feedback button to advise Oracle of any issues related to this article. * Problem Description --- You have created a SQL script and saved it to a directory on your PC hard drive (for example c:\script). You are able to execute this script in SQL*Plus by entering the following command: SQL@C:\script\myscript.sql However, when you try to open the script file in the SQL*Plus session, via Top Menu Bar -- File -- Open -- you receive an error: SP2-0310: unable to open file c:\script\myscript.sql Solution Description This error can be eliminated by doing one of the following workarounds: 1. Within the SQL*Plus window, enter the following command: SQL set editfile C:\script (directory where scripts are saved) NOTE: This will allow you to open the myscript.sql file without encountering any errors, but the setting will only be retained for the current session. If you would like to make this a permanent change, add the above command to the login.sql file on your PC. 2. Update the Windows Registry to add, or edit, the SQLPATH variable: On Windows PC, go to Start -- Run -- Regedit -- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- Software --- Oracle --- desired Home (could be HOME0, HOME1, etc.) and add/modify new string value for SQLPATH. Once the string is added, you can edit it to specify the directory where your SQL scripts are stored. You can have multiple directories, but each directory must be separated by a semicolon (;). Explanation --- The SP2-0310 is an abnormal error condition. In a default Windows installation, this error should not occur when trying to open a file in the manner described. By setting the editfile or SQLPATH, the errors is resolved. The SQLPATH variable is used as the search path when SQL*Plus executes scripts. By default, SQL*Plus, will first search in the Oracle_Home\bin directory and then any directories specified in the SQLPATH variable. RE: Unable to run catalog.sql
Another idea would be to set the SQLPATH variable in your registry (remember if you do this to TAKE A BACKUP OF THE REGISTRY FIRST). First of all map the network drive (it looks like you already have anyway) so that it is assigned a drive letter (D:\ in your case), as you don't really want to use the absolute path.. Open regedit or regedt32, and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Oracle/ORACLE_HOME and then either modify (if it is already there) or create a SQLPATH string, with a value of: D:\Oracle\Ora81\RDBMS\ADMIN\catalog.sql Maybe this will work? The difference is in the protocol used in the communication between the remote and local processes. Am I wrong? Re: Oracle8i on WinNT - renaming disc drives
If they're just renaming the disks where the datafiles reside, then the backup controlfile is the way to go. However, if they're renaming the disk where the Oracle Home resides, then you need to go edit the registry. Be sure and make a backup of the registry before you start the edit. Unasked, of course, is the question of why they would need to rename the disks? Changing network drive numbers is reasonably common but since Oracle8i on WinNT doesn't support network mounted drives this couldn't have any impact on the database. Changing the internal drive letters either involves spoofing the CMOS or the OS so that it thinks that drives are mounted in a different order or actually changing the controller connections. Maybe there's some reason to do this but I can't think of it. To reorg the drive names on NT/2000: 1. Backup your database (just a good thing to do) 2. ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE; - Generates a script with all the datafiles listed in it. 3. Edit initsid.ora and any ifile linked configs that point to drive paths. (Backup originals first). 4. Edit the controlfile script generated in #2 to show the new paths. 5. Shutdown the database 6. Rename the devices at the NT/2000 level 7. in svrmgrl or sqlplus (8i or 9i) run the script from #4. 8. Recover database if necessary. May need to do a recover until cancel and cancel it as soon as it asks for archived logs. We recreate instances doing this all the time to create dev and test systems. By recreating the controlfile you can rename all the dbfiles at once. If you can't take the system off line, it will be very tedious as Ron mentioned. Also if you want to change the location of SYSTEM tablespace, you have to take the system off line. It can be a long and detailed process. These are just a few thoughts off the top of my head. Make notes and document everything to CYA. Good Luck ROR mª¿ªm [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/28/01 05:20AM List hi! OK. Here's what I do in that situation: Here's the main driver -- disable foreign keys on parent_table.column alter table CHILD1 disable constraint FK1; alter table CHILD2 disable constraint FK2; --run the detail_update.sql for each pair of values, ie, the current value and the -- value that it will be set to @ex_detail_update -- re-enable foreign keys on parent_table.column alter table CHILD1 enable constraint FK1; alter table CHILD2 enable constraint FK2; Here's the ex_detail_update.sql - basically it will replace parameter 1 with parameter 2 @detail_update 1012 1013 @detail_update 1011 1012 @detail_update 1010 1011 @detail_update 1009 1010 Here's where the nitty gritty happens -- detail_update.sql update table CHILD1 set FK_ID = 2 where FK_ID = 1; update table CHILD2 set FK_ID = 2 where FK_ID = 1; update table PARENT set PK_ID = 2 where PK_ID = 1; COMMIT / When it's done it falls out to the next set of pairs. When you run out of pairs then the top level script will re-enable your constraints. RE: Longest SQL statements!!!
Murali: The only issue that I know of is in Oracle that the SQL statement must be less than 64K. I've written 3-page SQL statements that returned in the sub-0.1 second range. However, from a human standpoint, the longer the SQL is, the harder it is for a new developer to pick up and tune/debug/tweak/etc. In general, I try to keep my SQL to under 1/2 page. But I DO NOT sacrifice readability in order to keep my SQL Under 1/2 page. Most of the time, when I'm asked to tune or debug a SQL statement, my reformatted, revised SQL winds up being longer than the original -- but much easier for a human to read -- reformatting it makes it easier for me to tune or correct. Am I wrong? If so let me know. -Original Message- Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2001 5:25 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L hey lisa Thats what i was temted to reply as well {lol} .. but if you look closely .. both her conn are bequeth .. i was under the impression that bequeth was used only for local and not remote .. thats why we chose beq over tcp for db's that resided in same box for performance reasons .. or so i thought until now ;) thoughts ..? Off topic Perlesque question
Title: Off topic Perlesque question I know this is off topic but if I can get grab you perl guru's ear for second I'd greatly appreciate it. First I'd like to ask for a better place to post these types of questions. A perl list would be ideal but my boss has explicitly said I can join no more lists - my mail box is getting too big :(. os (I know here's the fundamental problem) : Win2K perl: ActiveState 5.6.1.630 Microsoft C++ Visual Studio 6.0 Ok now to the problem. I am having trouble using cpan to install certain modules/Bundles. I have been able to use ppm to install most of the modules I need but there are still 7-10 that I believe need to be done through the cpan interface. The problem I am having with cpan is when it's ready to compile the code it never works because of make problems. I have tried to download nmake instead to see if that would work but to no avail. I am making the correct changes in the config.pm file where it says make='blah blah' but the command is always bombing out and thus if no make test it will not continue the real make. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? What else can I do? I believe that the problem is in the syntax that cpan is using to compile things is not compatible with the windows version of make. The readme I used suggested to download nmake and use that but again the syntax seems different. In the cpan error I see it doing: make -f blah blah but the windows make help command shows all arguments should be like '/A' and I havent seen an argument for force. Does anyone know of a make out there for windows that behaves as unix in terms of syntax? My ultimate goal is to get slashcode to run on this machine for a web site but have to do it on a windows machine. I am terribly lost and don't know what to do next or where to look. Any advice would help thanks. Sorry for being so lengthy and off topic I don't know where I can post this and still be able to get a reply. Wish I could join an additional list. Is there any file I can edit so that every time cpan calls for 'make -f' I can substitute it with a syntax my nmake command will accept? Thank you very much. Ivan

Need Help Please - With Procedures
Hello all, I have attached an sql file containing a set of sql's (6) of them, which gives me information regarding table fragmentation. What I need to do is instead of writing seperate sql's, I need to write a procedure, where in I pass the owner and table name and then the result comes out, as you will see in the last sql. What I need is, if some one could please help in writing a procedure? How to put cursors and use all the information in different cursor variables etc. Please help. Thanks.
