RE: Rama Velpuri's 9i Backup and Recovery Book Available?

2001-12-21 Thread SARKAR, Samir

Personally speaking I think that it is one of the best books available on
Backup and Recovery.the case studies at the end of the boom r pure gems.
I have the Oracle 8 edition and the concepts r very clearly explained esp.
Media Recovery the concepts of which r still not very clear to many DBAs.

Do get the book cos it is a sure keeper..I dont think there is a 9i
Backup
and Recovery book yet available.

I am thinking of buying Rama Velpuri's book, 'Oracle 8i Backup and
Recovery'. Can anybody tell me if this is still considered to be one of
the best Oracle Backup and Recovery books available? Before buying the 8i
version of this book, can anybody tell me if there is a 9i book available?
Or if there are plans to produce a 9i version of the book and when it
 might be available?
 Thanks,
 Sam.

Web Development Toolkit and memory per session

2001-12-21 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

Hi,

Some of our developers are using the Web Development Toolkit, and we now
find that some sessions from the web site require 140M of memory or more.

This is placing a strain on the backend server, memory usage for sessions
adds up quickly.

Is it normal for Web Toolkit connections to use up that much memory per
session?

[I am obviously just fishing for information...]

in addition, define what you mean by much time -- how much data are

Is it better to have several big file systems or lot of smaller?

Little OT: CLOB, Oracle Text, and ADO

2001-12-21 Thread Witold Iwaniec

Hello

It may be little OT but I am sure there are developers here. Also I
hope some DBAs may know the answer...

I am experimenting with Oracle Text - need to use the field from a
VB application.

I have a table with a CLOB column and a ctxcat index built on that
column. If I insert records using SQL Plus, TOAD, or similar tool,
the index is automatically updated so my query:

select note_oid from lrmi_note
where catsearch(note_data, 'SomeValue', null)  0;

returns records matching the condition.

In the application - if I use ADODB.Connection with parameters and
execute my insert, the data is written, index automatically updated,
and my query returns matching records.

But if I use ADODB.Recordset to write the record, the data is written
but the index doesn't get updated. If I open SQL Plus and run:

select * from lrmi_note where note_oid = my_new_oid;

it shows me the record with the CLOB column filled. But if I query
the CLOB column using catsearch(), it doesn't return the record. If I
rebuild the index, the query with catsearch() will return the records.
But one of the reasons to use ctxcat indes is that it is updated with
each transaction...

While it may be specific to ADO I wonder if some Oracle gurus
know, or can direct to some info, why Oracle doesn't update the
ctxcat index even though the record is written and apears correctly.

RE: Move DB to Another Schema

2001-12-21 Thread Karniotis, Stephen

Ken.
After creating the user, you can use export to move the tables one at a
time. You will need to specify the owner of the table on the export (ie:
SYS.table name) and then on the import you will say FROMUSER=SYS TOUSER=xxx
on the command line. I would suggest examining the Utilities guide for
additional information.

Ooops. Simplest thing is to create a parameter file starting with
TABLES= and listing all the tables you created at the wrong place,
export, and then import using FROMUSER=SYS TOUSER=whomever. Then cleanup
the SYS account but VERY VERY CAREFULLY.
When you create the other account, first do not give it the RESOURCE
privilege (or revoke UNLIMITED TABLESPACE immediately afterwards), but
give it unlimited quota on two tablespaces, one for tables and one for
indexes, and set the tablespace for tables as the default tablespace.
You will have to ALTER INDEX ... REBUILD TABLESPACE tablespace for
indexes on all indexes afterwards. Sequences, views, synonyms etc. will
have to bre recreated manually.

Re: Move DB to Another Schema

2001-12-21 Thread Cherie_Machler

Ken,

Do a full export as user sys. Then create a new userid to act as the
owner of those non-sys and non-system tables.
Do an alter user owner_of_tables default tablespace
tablespace_for_application_tables;

Do an import of the application tables using the table (or tables - I can't
remember) option of the imp command.
You probably will need to use fromuser=SYS touser=owner_of_tables as well.

From the unix operating system prompt you can use the exp help=y and imp
help=y commands to get help on the syntax
for export and import. The Server Utilities User's Guide has lots of text
and examples for export and import. You can
also query Metalink for something moving tables from one schema to another
using export and import. There should
be a few notes in there outlining the exact steps to use.

Cherie

Ken,

Get rid of the SYS-owned tables that you created, and create a new

Carefully, drop them.

RE: IMPORT TIME IS HIGH

2001-12-21 Thread Karniotis, Stephen

Everyone needs to remember that the Oracle Import Utility is just a 3GL C
program with INSERT statements. It is widely publicized that the ratio is
1:4 so this should not come as a surprise to anyone. Some ways to improve
performance is to use a large buffer size (10-20M) and set COMMIT=Y to
facilitate array inserts. There are OS options for improving the I/O
bandwidth on the file, but that's really it.

Rachel is correct. She did not want to frighten anyone. Now the good news
is with Oracle9i, Oracle has added Array Inserts to the tool so this may
help. How many of us remember when Oracle claimed that EXP/IMP were to go
away in 8i

What about moving all the tables at one time (FULL=Y)? I have about 150

I am resolved that the trouble is not enough swap and not enough aio
processes. I think this will significantly improve the system. Spreading
swap will be my next push if I still have trouble. vmtune will be last
which is basically what I wanted to confirm.

AIX vmstat shows

Ethan,

AIX performs all file i/o via the OS's virtual memory. In other words, the
VM (which is a combination of both the RAM and the Swap) is used for both
executable (OS/user code) and user's memory area as well as for I/O buffers.
This allocation is dynamic and certain upper and lower limits are set by the
parameters in vmtune. At times of high i/o, you will find that the 'fre' mem
(seen in vmstat' goes down drastically and the po/fr/sr goes up drastically
as a result of old memory pages that served file i/o buffers are paged out.
This is normal and in line with what you are observing and is similar to
Solaris.

What you *should* be concerned about is excessive values in 'pi' as this
indicates excessive paging-*in*, probably due to earlier pageouts of live
pages that are still required. You are probably seeing high I/o waits since
there is a lot of writes (paging out) to the swap area. 'iostat' will
probably indicate that disks that host your swap area are almost 100%
loaded. In this case, you should make sure that you (a) spread out swap on
multiple disks, making sure that they are NOT on RAID-5. (b) allocate
dedicated drives to swap areas if possible (no RAID5!).

FWIW, vmstat in Solaris is able to distinguish between pi/po values for
executable, file i/o and 'other' (?) types of paging. Can you find out for
us if AIX also provides this? (Don't have access to an AIX box).

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

find that some sessions from the web site require 140M of memory or more.

This is placing a strain on the backend server, memory usage for sessions
adds up quickly.

Is it normal for Web Toolkit connections to use up that much memory per
session?

[I am obviously just fishing for information...]

My experience with intermedia or context server, or whatever
they call it this week, is in dealing with iFS, so I know just
enough to be dangerous. :)

It sounds like you need to have the context server running
to periodically update the indexes.

On unix it's 'ctxsrv'. I suggest you read the docs on this
and do a search on metalink, there is some helpful
information there.

Hello

It may be little OT but I am sure there are developers here. Also I
hope some DBAs may know the answer...

I am experimenting with Oracle Text - need to use the field from a
VB application.

I have a table with a CLOB column and a ctxcat index built on that
column. If I insert records using SQL Plus, TOAD, or similar tool,
the index is automatically updated so my query:

select note_oid from lrmi_note
where catsearch(note_data, 'SomeValue', null)  0;

returns records matching the condition.

In the application - if I use ADODB.Connection with parameters and
execute my insert, the data is written, index automatically updated,
and my query returns matching records.

But if I use ADODB.Recordset to write the record, the data is written
but the index doesn't get updated. If I open SQL Plus and run:

select * from lrmi_note where note_oid = my_new_oid;

it shows me the record with the CLOB column filled.

2001-12-21 Thread Karniotis, Stephen

I believe you will need to CREATE OR REPLACE SNAPSHOT or drop and then
recreate it.

Before dropping it, look at the view DBA_SNAPSHOTS for the contents of the
snapshot. Secondly, you can, within SQL*Plus, type HELP SNAPSHOT, and get
some syntactical help with the commands. Otherwise, you will need some
on-line documentation.

Can't answer your question but sounds like you might benefit from reading
Gaja Krishna Vaidyanatha's paper (Tuning Oracle Without Cache Hit Ratios)
 at
the Open World site (http://www.oracle.com/openworld/us/conference) or
reading Oracle Tuning 101 (book) by the same author. Sounds like you had
 a
problem and immediatly threw memory at it as opposed to working to
 identify
the SQL that was actually causing the problem. You saw a small
 improvement
but not as much as you hoped. This is exactly the type of thing Gaja
 talks
about in the papers and books.

 HI list.

I was tuning a database (Oracle 7.3.4) that was
waiting for free buffer waits mostly.
I tuned DBWn batch size properly (increased it till
4MB) as well as buffer cache size (it's 600MB now)
too and I got some improvement but I didn't get a
 major improvement.
But some weeks ago, when we changed the disk array
(from one symmetrix to another) and made an appropiate

disk distribution (to eliminate contention), free
buffer waits went down (almost desappeared). We
 didn't change anything else.

I noticed that the avg db file parallel write
 changed from 150ms to 30ms.

Can someone explain me why free buffer waits
 dissapeared?

 TIA

RE: Move DB to Another Schema

2001-12-21 Thread Deshpande, Kirti

Ken,
You can use a tables= option to list all the tables you want exported. And
then use the fromuser= and touser= option to import them (to the right
tablespace).
Also, please remember that there is an upper limit on the number of
characters in the tables= list. I can't remember the exact number, may be
some one else can. (I think it is 2k or so). If this becomes a limitation,
just export/impot a little less number of tables at a time.
Good Luck.

If you move with FULL=Y, you will move the entire database. Because you
have placed objects in SYS, in violation of general DBA guidelines, you have
forced this upon yourself.

RE: Little OT: CLOB, Oracle Text, and ADO

2001-12-21 Thread Witold Iwaniec

Thanks for the reply

I have tried ctx_ddl.sync_index() but it can be used to synchronize
ctxsys.context indexes only. In my case it is ctxsys.ctxcat index.
Since it gets updated properly when I use few different ways to
insert records I believe it is something specific to the way
ADODB.Recordset modifies database.

The index gets updated properly when I run, in any way, an INSERT
statement. I guess the ADODB.Recordset works on a different level.
It may be something similar to differences in loading data with SQL
Loader using conventional load and direct load - issuing INSERT
statements vs. writing directly to the table. It is just a guess...

I have a table with a CLOB column and a ctxcat index built on that
column. If I insert records using SQL Plus, TOAD, or similar tool,
the index is automatically updated so my query:

 select note_oid from lrmi_note
 where catsearch(note_data, 'SomeValue', null)  0;

 returns records matching the condition.

In the application - if I use ADODB.Connection with parameters and
execute my insert, the data is written, index automatically updated,
and my query returns matching records.

But if I use ADODB.Recordset to write the record, the data is written
but the index doesn't get updated. If I open SQL Plus and run:

 select * from lrmi_note where note_oid = my_new_oid;

it shows me the record with the CLOB column filled.

2001-12-21 Thread John Kanagaraj

Ken,

SYS objects are NOT exported since an import of SYS would basically then
import database metadata. The only method is to create another schema (not
SYSTEM!) and move these tables into the new schema using a series of CTAS.
If you have the DDL scripts, then run them against the new user rather than
SYS (did you run them using SVRMGRL connected as INTERNAL before?)

Hope everything goes well with you and the family this Christmas season!

Really?

Do you know which version?

In 8i it seems to be alive and well, and iFS requires it.

Maybe as of 9i?

My experience with intermedia or context server, or whatever
they call it this week, is in dealing with iFS, so I know just
enough to be dangerous. :)

It sounds like you need to have the context server running
to periodically update the indexes.

On unix it's 'ctxsrv'. I suggest you read the docs on this
and do a search on metalink, there is some helpful
information there.

Hello

It may be little OT but I am sure there are developers here. Also I
hope some DBAs may know the answer...

I am experimenting with Oracle Text - need to use the field from a
VB application.

I have a table with a CLOB column and a ctxcat index built on that
column. If I insert records using SQL Plus, TOAD, or similar tool,
the index is automatically updated so my query:

select note_oid from lrmi_note
where catsearch(note_data, 'SomeValue', null)  0;

returns records matching the condition.

In the application - if I use ADODB.Connection with parameters and
execute my insert, the data is written, index automatically updated,
and my query returns matching records.

But if I use ADODB.Recordset to write the record, the data is written
but the index doesn't get updated. If I open SQL Plus and run:

select * from lrmi_note where note_oid = my_new_oid;

it shows me the record with the CLOB column filled.

RE: Web Development Toolkit and memory per session

2001-12-21 Thread Jared . Still

This figure includes the shared memory portion of Oracle. The memory
usage per process can be determined by subtracting the size of the
shared memory segments for that instance.

'ipcs -ma' will display the shared memory segments and sizes.

Or you can use svrmgr to locate the correct segmemts:

svrmgr oradebug ipc

This will dump the IPC data to a trace file.

I would beg to differ on the use of svrmgrl over sqlplus in 8.1.x.
None other than Tom Kyte corrected me on the (non)use of sqlplus in

For 8.1.6, 8.1.7, you are still recommended to use svrmgrl for running

Hi, Hulmet,
I tried. To use RMAN on MTS database

Also look up rollbacks at Steve Adams site and Jonathan Lewis' site.

well if it is owned by oracle then only oracle type jobs can be executed
by the (un)intelligent agent), if you needed to run a job that needed
privileges outside of oracle, it wont run, hence the reason it needed to
be owned and setuid of root.

is it a security risk, no doubt, would i run it on my prod machines,
probably not but for development, i would.

RE: Little OT: CLOB, Oracle Text, and ADO

2001-12-21 Thread MacGregor, Ian A.

From the Intermedia New Features for 8.1.6
-
We now recommend processing pending DML through a dbms_job -- an
individual job for each index, a ctxsys job for all indexes, or some combination of
the two. This eliminates the need for ctxsrv, and thus eliminates the
problem of starting ctxsrv each time the database starts. The ctxsrv program
itself is now deprecated, and may be removed in some future release.
--

Is it required for IFS? I haven't tried to use that beast, but checking a Metalink
forum, indicates that ctx_ddl.synch_index is preferred over ctxstv.

I have a table with a CLOB column and a ctxcat index built on that
column. If I insert records using SQL Plus, TOAD, or similar tool,
the index is automatically updated so my query:

select note_oid from lrmi_note
where catsearch(note_data, 'SomeValue', null)  0;

returns records matching the condition.

In the application - if I use ADODB.Connection with parameters and
execute my insert, the data is written, index automatically updated,
and my query returns matching records.

But if I use ADODB.Recordset to write the record, the data is written
but the index doesn't get updated. If I open SQL Plus and run:

select * from lrmi_note where note_oid = my_new_oid;

it shows me the record with the CLOB column filled. But if I query
the CLOB column using
