RE: 8i Replication: administrator privs

2002-02-24 Thread אדר יחיאל

Hello Suzy

We work with replication and repadmin is doing all the administration for
replication.
I would not allow non dba to mess around with it.
Wrong parameters can kill your performance and or cause the application to
stop working.

Re: What are the major difference between Oracle RAC and Parallel server?

2002-02-24 Thread Don Granaman

Sorry for the late reply, but the "major" differences are:

0) Cache fusion extended to write-write (8i OPS had read-write)
1) Locking mechanisms are "self-tuning" ("Dynamic resource mastering" - Use
the defaults!)
2) Major re-write of a *lot* of the internals
3) No more "DLM" - its now "GCS" & "GES" (separate lock & enqueque services)
4) Oracle is pushing it like they never pushed OPS - much better marketing!
5) Oracle Parallel FailSafe (OPFS) has been enhanced and renamed to Real
Application Clusters Guard
6) "Lock mastering" is now "Resource mastering"
7) "Lock database" replaced by "Global Resource Directory"
8) There are now five (!) RAC manuals instead of 8i OPS's two
9) Most of the v$ and GV$ views have changed and many of the names are
different
...ad infinitum...

The RAC concepts manual reveals a lot, especially the "What's New in Oracle
Cluster Software" section:
http://download-west.oracle.com/otndoc/oracle9i/901_doc/rac.901/a89867/whats
new.htm#983402

The "Real Application Clusters Deployment and Performance " manual was
written by someone who actually knows the stuff. Some of the detailed
descriptions in the "SQL Statement Execution in Real Application Clusters"
section of the RAC Deployment and Performance" manual are quite revealing as
to how cache fusion actually works. I can't say I completely agree with ALL
the installation recommendations, but I understand why they make them
(K.I.S.S. principle).

IMHO, the best "starting point" for the 9i docs is:
http://download-west.oracle.com/otndoc/oracle9i/901_doc/nav/docindex.htm

In the end, RAC is the next step in the evolution of OPS, but perhaps the
magnitude of the delta does justify a name change (e.g. humanoid -> human).
[Note that this is a slight divergence from my previous position.
"Consistency is the virtue of the small mind." - Confucius]. However, I
still think that the main motivation for the name change was to avoid the
all-too-frequent "garlic necklace and raised cross" reaction to any
suggestion of using "Oracle Parallel Server".

Re:Problem with Rollback segment getting locked

2002-02-24 Thread dgoulet

Viral,

Why do you have 12 rollback segments with only 25 users? I normally run
that kind of load with only 5 & have not had any difficulty for over 10 years.
My question to you would be, are these segments online? You can have all the
rollback segments you want, but it their NOT in the rollback_segment parameter
of your init file or else brought online by some other mechanism then you might
as well not have them because as far as the database is concerned their just not
usable.

Re: 8i Concept PCTFREE & PCTUSED are 0

2002-02-24 Thread Don Granaman

I don't think this is true anymore. At one time, PCTUSED had to be set to
"1", but as of 8i, at least, it will be put back on the freelist when empty
if PCTUSED=0. (I haven't tested it myself, but I believe Dave Ensor.)

RE: Problem with Rollback segment getting locked

2002-02-24 Thread Kimberly Smith

Oracle will try and put four users per rollback by default. So based
on that most of your segments will go unused. It will not
move to another rollback just cause someone is already using
the one.

There is a real difference between a resource and a lock, a resource normally
has one or more locks (either granted or waiting).
So this statement doesn't mean much.

Well, GCS + GES = DLM, so the names have been replaced.

But it is still important to realize that if your application doesn't scale on

won't ...

RBS Tablespace Recovery

2002-02-24 Thread Sujatha Madan

Hi,

I've been doing some testing on recovery scenarios and I've got a couple of
questions about rollback segment recoveries.

I've taken my corrupted RBS datafile offline and opened the database. I then
tried to create additional RBS's (for temporary usage) in the system
tablespace. However, it gives me a ORA-1110 on the offline RBS datafile. How
come it is doing this??? I was under the impression that I would be able to
cleanly create additional RBS's on another tablespace.

Also, I have commented out the RBS paramater in the init.ora.

Thanks for any help any one can give me.

Cheers,

Sujatha

RE: RE: Changing dump destinations in init.ora

2002-02-24 Thread Rich Holland

Yes, the SPFILE is stored in binary format in the database, but you can
sort of work around it. To create a text file from the SPFILE, you can
issue:

CREATE PFILE 'pfilename' FROM SPFILE 'filename';

And vice versa with:

CREATE SPFILE = 'filename' FROM PFILE = 'pfilename';

When starting the instance, you can also specify an alternate SPFILE:

SQL> startup pfile=filename

There's also some new syntax for the ALTER SYSTEM command to specify the
scope of the change:

ALTER SYSTEM set parameter = value SCOPE = MEMORY | SPFILE |
BOTH;
