Re: Linking during instllations

I don't know if anyone has implied that it *was* unnecessary for Windows;
it's just not done.  But hard lessons have proved it necessary on UNIX;
it's not only Oracle that does this...

Raw devices and redo

2002-08-18 Thread Antje Sackwitz

Hi,
please give your opinion.
I am reading Jonathan Lewis book Practical Oracle 8i.
He says redo log definitly should be placed on raw devices.
On the other hand I have a couple of years old document by Oracle
stating redo logs definitly do not belong on raw devices.
So who is right?

Hello Antje

Pay close attention to the type of windows version they install on the

I got into a situation where I wanted to use 3GB for Oracle and it turns
out that we have the standard NT edition instead of Enterprise edition
and a single process is limited to use 2GB memory.

Another thing to consider is this:

>From OraPerf:
The LGWR needs to scan all processes to find each process that is
waiting for the commit to be written.

So when you have an excess of process LGWR works harder.

Re: Raw devices and redo

2002-08-18 Thread Tim Gorman

I'm sure that each source is accompanied by some type of explanation?
Surely neither would make such a bald sweeping statement without some
substantiation?

I would agree with your summarization of Mr. Lewis's position. The type of
I/O activity associated with online redo log files (i.e. high volumes of
sequential write I/O) suggests an unbuffered type of file. Storing the data
written by LGWR in any form of a file-system buffer-cache (which is
characteristic of most file-systems) would be a waste of time and
processing. Caching is associated with things which you want to write once
and then read many, many times. This is not the case with redo data written
down by LGWR. At best, it will be read only once more (by the ARCH
process), and certainly not in a timely-enough fashion as to justify
buffering it...

As the name suggests, "raw" devices (a.k.a "logical volumes") are just
that -- an unmanaged, unbuffered, "raw" access to the underlying I/O
subsystem. There are also file-systems with which the caching can be turned
off (i.e. DEC/Compaq/HP AdvFS, etc), so like any simple sweeping statement,
the real answer is more complicated, but in general Mr. Lewis's statements
are certainly more correct than the other mystery document.

Please consider the possibility also that you may have misunderstood the
message in the "couple years old document by Oracle", because the
interpretation you stated is so far from correct...

Re: ORA-12500 TNS:listener failed -- Intermittent

2002-08-18 Thread Yechiel Adar

Hello Bob

We had the same thing an it was because the current connections + oracle SGA
used up to 2GB limit of memory available for oracle on NT. The solution for
us was to lower the size of the block_buffers so the SGA used less memory.
The solution that Chaim talks about works only on NT Enterprise version. We
are on standard version so it did not worked for us.

how to force a log switch

2002-08-18 Thread Andrey Bronfin

Dear gurus !
It's either a Sunday's dead brain or ..
Is there an init.ora parameter to force redo logs switch every 3 minutes or
so ?
( the reason is that I need frequent log switches in order for the standby
database to pickup changes frequently , i.e. to be "almost" in sync with the
primary DB. And, off course, issuing "alter system switch logfile" in the
application is not feasible )
Now, i only found parameters related to the frequency of the CHECKPOINTs and
not log switches.
Any help , please ...

Ron , thanks a lot !
I know this solution , but:
there are certain pick-times when there are many activities going on against
the DB. Therefore making the redo logs smaller will cause performance
problems. So , i'd have this solution as a last resort, in case i will not
find an init.ora solution.
Thanks again !

The answer pretty simple - change the size of your logs. Log switching
is a function of transaction volume. The fewer the transactions, the
fewer the log switches. Consider that logs only switch when they are
filled (or manually). So ,if there are insufficient transactions to fill
your logs in 3 minutes, make your logs smaller. If your logs are
switching every 10 minutes now, then create new logs that are 1/3 the
size.

Having said all that, the other thing you could do is create a dbms_job
that runs every three minutes and forces a log switch. It's not as

Dear gurus !
It's either a Sunday's dead brain or ..
Is there an init.ora parameter to force redo logs switch every 3 minutes
or so ? ( the reason is that I need frequent log switches in order for
the standby database to pickup changes frequently , i.e. to be "almost"
in sync with the primary DB. And, off course, issuing "alter system
switch logfile" in the application is not feasible )
Now, i only found parameters related to the frequency of the CHECKPOINTs
and not log switches. Any help , please ...

Andrey, I assume, version < 9.x of the database?(if i'm wrong let me
know and we can talk about 9i features of data guard).

How about a job(via dbms_job) to do what you want?

I am not sure if 9i has introduced any such parameter.
Other than sizing smaller redo log files [but that still doesn't guarantee
that you get a log-switch every X minutes], you'd have to write
a DBMS_JOB or a CRON job to do an ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE.

Oracle Linking

2002-08-18 Thread ltiu

There is apparently two stages to the Oracle installation on Unix. A file
copying installation where all the required binaries are copied from cdrom to
hard disk and a linking install where the binary/object files are linked.

If the first stage succeeds but the second stage does not. How do I start the
linking install without having to go through the first stage copying install
again?

Thanks.

Re: how to force a log switch

2002-08-18 Thread Tim Gorman

Oracle9i hasn't introduced such a parameter; the best way to achieve what
you want below 9i is to resize redo logs to be smaller (which several
replies have already mentioned)...

With 9i Data Guard, you have options where you can set LGWR to ship redo log
files to the standby, and there is even a mode where redo records
(especially COMMIT markers) must be shipped and applied to the standby
before LGWR considers a COMMIT on the primary to be complete. In all, there
are four basic options with 9i Data Guard:

* LGWR synchronously ships redo records to standby and standby applies
redo before transaction considered complete
* LGWR ships redo records to standby before transaction considered
complete (standby can apply records at a later time)
* ARCH ships redo log files to standby and standby applies redo
immediately
* ARCH ships redo log files to standby and standby applies redo at a
later time

The first two options come only with 9i Data Guard in 9i EE; the third
option came available with 8i EE (i.e. automated standby management), and
the fourth option has been around (unofficially) since Oracle v6 and
officially as a supported product since v7.3 (i.e. original standby database
option) and is still the only option for 8i/9i SE...

As you can imagine, there are obvious advantages and disadvantages in cost,
performance, availability, and complexity to each mode. But one cool thing
about the first option is that 9i Data Guard can "switch identities" of the
primary and standby (i.e. swap standby into primary role and primary into
standby role) almost instantaneously using the ALTER DATABASE SWITCH
IDENTITY commands. It's another way of achieving the same high-availability
goals as RAC/OPS in an "active/passive" arrangement.

In this sense, the 9i Data Guard product is very much in competition with
the 9iRAC product. It will be interesting to see how this competition plays
out, both within Oracle as well as amongst customers...

Re: Oracle Linking

2002-08-18 Thread Tim Gorman

The error message in the "install.log" or "make.log" files should narrow
your choices down, but in general...

Underneath "$ORACLE_HOME" there are several ".mk" files, which are scripts
for the venerable UNIX "make" command. To find them, you can run the UNIX
"find" command as follows:

$ find $ORACLE_HOME -name "*.mk" -print

Within each product subdirectory under "$ORACLE_HOME" where a "lib"
subdirectory exists, there will usually be two ".mk" files: one prefixed
with "env_" and another prefixed with "ins_". For example, under the
"$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms" subdirectory, you'll find a "lib" subdirectory in which
resides an "env_rdbms.mk" file and an "ins_rdbms.mk" file. The "ins_*.mk"
script is the one you're interested in; it references "make" script
settings in the "env_*.mk" script, so in the end you're using both scripts
anyway, but the "ins_*.mk" script is the "top-level" one...

Within a "make" script there are "targets" defined, which describe how to
compile (if necessary! not always necessary) and link an executable.
Generally, Oracle defines an overall target called "install" to
compile/link/install all executed defined within, or it defines targets for
each specific executable (i.e. target "ioracle" performs compiles, links,
and file-movement for installation of the "oracle executable with the
"ins_rdbms.mk" script, etc).

To call make from the UNIX command-line to compile, link, and install a new
"oracle" executable, you'd run the following commands:

$ cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
$ make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle

If you were just going to "shotgun" both of the executables defined as part
of the "network" product for the server-side, you'd run something like:

$ cd $ORACLE_HOME/network/lib
$ make -f ins_net_server.mk install

...and "make" would compile/link/install the "tnslsnr" and the "lsnrctl"
executables...

The error messages you see from the "link phase" of Oracle software
installation in the "install.log" or "make.log" scripts come from these
"make -f ..." commands. Check the log files to find out exactly what
failed -- using the "shotgun" method can take a lot of time... :-)

Hope this helps...

Re: Oracle Linking

2002-08-18 Thread Tim Gorman

"genclntsh" is a UNIX shell script run by the Oracle installer, so you can
debug it like you would any shell script. It is located in
"$ORACLE_HOME/bin", so go to that directory while logged in as the Oracle
software owner in UNIX and simply run the script. Maybe it will duplicate
the problem you're observing; maybe not...

If you edit/view the script file, you'll see a "set -x" command near the
top, which is commented out by default. Un-comment it and the shell will
output each shell command as it executes -- should help pinpoint where the
problem is occuring and may even pinpoint what the problem is...

Hope this helps...

If linking is stuck at genclntsh, 100% cpu utilization, no disk activity,
what could be the possible reasons for this?

Well, I hoped I demonstrated how on at least one platform.

My solution for another platform, if vocalized, will start another
of these tedius OS religious battles

I was trying to say that complex tools and traces such as
tkprof and event 10046 are of no help if you don't understand
the underlying system and SQL.

Despite what is said there are uses for database ratios. Some
such as disk vs memory sorts are vital to throughput.

Ignore the fact that it is imperfect and use explain plan
to look for inappropriate FTS. The payoff in quickly catching
unecessary I/O, both physical and logical, overrides the need for
detailed analysis

Then is the time for tkprof, setting events, changing the optimizer and

I don't know why but I seem to have alot of troubles with decimals on
this list. Sure don't have the same problem with cheques :)

I agree the data is a waste but many do not know this and worry
needlessly.

So at the session level the SQL Net events allow me to troubleshoot
the applications server. Cool I continue to learn.

I notice that these numbers often climb when Oracle has to be aggressive
in reclaiming shared pool memory because of literal SQL. I find that
reducing
the shared pool to as small as possible while storing the data
dictionary
optimizes performance (even if it's still bad) which are reflected in
these numbers.

The many bugs in the shared pool memory handling in many
8i versions often show up here too.

Thanks once again Cary.

On to other stuff

At my current contract I am using a NetApp filer as an archive machine
and
I am extremely happy with how it has worked out.

Archive logs are stored locally on a T3 and through NFS on the filer.
MIN_SUCCEED_DESTINATION or whatever is set to one. If the NetApp
disappears
oracle keeps chugging along writing the archive logs to the local array.

All hot backups are put on the filer.

I would be extremely hesitant to use it for any other files.

I do have to be careful with the timing of my backups as it
is pretty easy to overwhelm the appliance when copying files in.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback - very useful. John, Sydney's pretty
quiet right now - I've got friends on both sides; contractors and recruiters

As it stands, it looks like I'll be getting a permanent position wearing my

[DM] Does this parameter measure anything then?

It shows the number of blocks read from the OS via calls to read().

I was told, in a private communication, by a person who used to work for Oracle Support
that oracle is reading indexes via "read" and tables via "readv" call, indicating that
a "sequential" read really refers to to reading indexes and "scattered" refers to
reading
tables. Is that a correct interpretation? One more thing, oracle documentation claims
that
oracle, as of 8i, first reserves redo copy latch and then, after that, it reserves the
allocation latch. After many hours of trying, I finally gave up trying to understand
the
algorithm. Can you, please, shed some light on that?
Thanks!

Mladen,

Read http://www.hotsos.com/dnloads/1.Holt2000.02.01-Backwards.pdf (by

Read http://www.ixora.com.au/tips/tuning/redo_latches.htm (by Steve

Depends mostly on your users needs. If most of the time your users would want monthly
sum of measures, you give them a
materialized view for that.
You can also use the summary advisor feature of oracle (dbms_olap) to find out which
mviews oracle thinks is needed based on
usage.
