Re: Want to BAARF - Recommendations for 10 36G Drive config

2003-06-14 Thread Mogens Nørgaard

Hi Ron,

It's done. You're Party member # 42 - with a special obligation to know the
Answer to RAID-5, of course.

Three members have socalled red numbers that will remain guaranteed constant
for as long as we can keep them constant. They are:

Carel-Jan Engels (#11)
Leif Knudsen (#13)
and now Ron (#42).

By the way, Peter Gram has now registered BAARF.com and it should be available
in a couple of days. In the beginning it will just point to the MiracleAS.dk
page for BAARF stuff, but who knows what can happen?

RE: wait event puzzler

2003-06-14 Thread Cary Millsap
For the record, 'db file sequential read' isn't ALWAYS a single-block read.
There are cases in which you can see 'db file sequential read' events with
p3>1. It happens (well, happened) when the kernel reads from a data file
directly into a user's non-shared process space (not the SGA). It used to
happen in Oracle7.3 when reading sort segments from disk into a PGS.
Nowadays, these reads are done with the event 'direct path read'.

It is true that 'db file scattered read' will never have p3=1.

Yes, 'db file sequential read' is always a single block read. It is 'db
file scattered read' which is <= DB_FILE_MULTIBLOCK_READ_COUNT

...Because if they don't sell RAID5, they don't recover the R&D costs of

I'm curious now. Pictures required.

Meanwhile I have never understood why storage vendors would prefer
selling RAID5 over RAID10. More disks=more profit surely? Also 10 > 5
therefore self evidently twice as good for all applications. Meanwhile
we have this strange situation where performance consultants are
publicising the fact that you have less need for performance consultants
with RAID10 than with RAID5.

RE: Inverse 9i Question

2003-06-14 Thread Niall Litchfield
My answers

A) Available in 9i Release 1 only as part of DBMS_REDEFINITION - available
in 9.2 from SQL
B) Not available at all in 9i Release 1 so far as I can see - available in
9.2
C) Not available at all
D) Available
E) Wrong name - should be DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY.

So I'd say c),e) and maybe b) depending on what 9i is defined as. Is this an
OCP question?

RE: Inverse 9i Question

2003-06-14 Thread Freeman Robert - IL
The correct answer is C. No points for Joe's answer since it's not
supported. Oracle9i supports renaming of column names, constraint names, and
you can drop columns (note I didn't say new features as drop column was in
8i too as I recall).

Oracle World Paris call for papers

2003-06-14 Thread Stephane Faroult
Forgive me if this is redundant information (I have suspended list
e-mail for a week), but there is an European edition of Oracle World in
Paris at the end of October which may interest budget-conscious EMEA
denizens and, who knows, people from elsewhere as well who couldn't make
it to Frisco.
The call for paper is now open (till July 7th) and you will find all
information at

Warning : looks weird with Netscape 4.77.

We are considering migration of an Oracle eBusiness Suite 11.5.8 from
HP-UX 11.0 to Solaris9.

I'd like to know if anyone has done this and how daunting the task is.

Are there any 3rd Party tools which can help out?

Coming to the conventional approaches:

1. What do you think of Export/Import of a 200 GB database?
1a. How much time will it take?
1b. Any strategies for cutting that down?

2. How does CTAS over dblink compare to Export/Import?

3. Is there any tool that converts Oracle datafiles on HP-UX 11.0 to
Oracle datafiles on Solaris 9. If so we would just need to recreate the
control files on the target database and we are done.

Any suggestions, pointers, words of wisdom are greatly appreciated...

Thanks & Regards,
Sashi
