BTW -
it was a great dinner at Chevy's for those who missed it. Full house again, and
many people driving in from afar who didn't attend the show.

If you somehow prevent the specific root account out, can't the sysadmin
still do an su - oracle and then get in as sysdba under the oracle

The security model of Oracle on both unix and Windows
precludes any ability to prevent access to the database
by a knowledgeable user with root or admin access.

Pete Sharman could no doubt go into some detail here.

I bought his security book, I'll check it out when I get to work.

Could be there's something I've overlooked. :)

You may be able to approach this from a security aspect. You could
discuss with your management whether it is a good idea for the system
administrators to be in a database. Depending on the security or SLA
requirements of the database, you may have some leverage there.

Just for grins, I'll ask this question... Is there any way to keep the
Unix
root user from logging into the database (i.e. connect internal or / as
sysdba)? Currently using 8.1.7.4 on Solaris 8 here.

We have a couple people in our Unix admin group that feel the need to
help
by writing their own DB monitoring scripts. Of course, they don't know
what
they're talking about. They do not have formal logins for the database,
but
since they are root users they are connecting via connect internal. This
is not only counterproductive but actually a potential security
issue--just
because someone has root doesn't necessarily entitle them to see the data
in
the database. What if it is a payroll database?

So, I'm curious, is there any way to prevent access via connect internal
 or / as sysdba?

 Thanks in advance.

RE: password

2002-12-17 Thread Ari Kaplan
This program does not reverse-engineer or decrypt Oracle passwords. It does
a dictionary forward brute-force hack. So, if the user's password is not
in the list of pre-defined words then the password is never revealed. This
just encourages DBAs to enforce password management. See the verify_function
for password management in Oracle for details.

For example, setting your password to SHOELACE would be detected by this
program, as it is in the English dictionary. SH03LAC3 would not.

Basic rules of having a combination of characters, numbers, and punctuation
marks, and not writing your password on a slip of paper by your monitor, all
lead to a safe environment.

RE: IOUG 2003

2002-11-27 Thread Ari Kaplan
Rachel and everyone,

As a follow-up, speaker notifications have not gone out yet for IOUG Live!
2003. They are scheduled to email the week of December 9. If you submitted
an abstract, IOUG suggests that you wait until mid-December to register for
the conference. At that time, you'll know the status of your submission.
The early-bird rates will still apply at that time. If you have further
questions, please call HQ at 312-245-1579 and they will be happy to assist
you.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Okay, so I'm trying to get costs for conferences etc so my boss can
 budget for them.

I go to the IOUG site and look at costs for the 2003 conference. I see
register online so I click on it. They have it set up for speaker
registration already, and ask for the email confirmation code you
 received.

Has anyone on this list, who submitted an abstract, actually RECEIVED a
response? Either acceptance or rejection? I haven't.

How can you set something up to allow people to register if they don't
 know which way to register?

Sheesh. I can't even register for the University Session I want because
I don't know what status I should use when registering.

One more for the ORACLE-L list: on Monday night there will be Hackers

You have never sounded like an Oracle shill at any presentation of

There are non-Oracle employees who present. It's harder and harder to

It is true, that presenters are predominantly Oracle employees, and

 Dear list,

Though I won't be attending OOW, I will be in
   San Francisco during
 those same dates ( 11/10 - 11/15), just a couple
   miles from the
Moscone Center where OOW is held.

Are there any plans yet among list members to

evening? I think Monday is spoken for myself,

to meet a few list members another evening.

Hi list,

Thanks John for the warm email. I am honored to have been elected to the
Board, and will listen and work hard to make IOUG continue to be great for
the Oracle community. There were many very strong candidates running this
year, so I know how valuable it was to have been elected.

Any comments people have to make IOUG better, my email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

first time you get the error,

open a new window go to $ORACLE_HOME/bin
 look for genclntsh
vi the file, looking for -z defs, remove that part, the -z defs
 ./genclntsh

then hit retry, all should be good.

I agree. IOUG has a site to help educate management on the benefits of
attending IOUG Live! 2002:

From the IOUG email campaign:

Still need your boss's approval to attend Live! 2002?
If more than 290 technical sessions, 16 exhibitor forums, Oracle
Campgrounds, and the inside scoop on Oracle 9i Release 2 aren't enough to
get your boss's approval, click here for a list of reasons to attend Live!

OK. Everyone. My 2 cents now. I am the Focus Area Manager for the DBA
Track at IOUG-A Live. Please encourage damangement (Gaja Terminology) to
facilitate your attendance at this great event. Please remember that if you
are a member of a local or regional user group, you receive a significant

Also remind damagement that this is not a boon doggle. This is an

*PocketDBA is licensed for one year at $600 per database instance plus $50
per user including technical support. A one year license of PocketAdmin is
$500 per server and $50 per user including technical support.

From the site. Doesn't look too expensive to me.
