My Norton Antivirus reports that Stephane's email re. "How to pass
value from SQL*Plus to Unix scripts?" contains the W32.Klez.H@mm virus
in an "item" called stars-bkgrd.

Anyone else had same alert ?

Caveat Emptor my friend.
I would have never have sent either money or educational

what.
Once bitten twice shy is a good way to look at it from your point of

Hello, Guys,
Thought of making all of you aware with dirty game
played by Crescent Cc
(www.crescent.cc).
I got trapped with this company's offer letter and
lost money, lost job, got lots of frustration etc.
.etc
Sharing this with all of you just thinking that - you
guys will think twice before taking job with such
fraud companies.
This company takes either Original degree certificate
or some big amount $$ from candidates to bring them in
US. This is OK, if they at least fulfill their
promises. But, this company simply puts candidate on
hold
I lost money... my few friends also lost money, couple
of them sent original degree certificate... and
company is not returning either their certificate or
money...
I am not sure - whether such companies are really
existing in US? Can any one of you guys check if you
stay in same town where company is having office?
You will see n number of people calling before you
sending certificate/money to them. Once they get
certificate/money, they don't care about candidates.
Few of those names are - Siva, Vidya Sharma, Yolandé
Vanzyl, Andrew Tadikonda, Sebastian, Mehnaz Ahmed
etc... etc
Their email addresses are -

systems doesn't happen that way.

Back in the 1980s when the US space shuttle
"Challenger" explosion was being investigated by a panel of
eminent politicians, lawyers, and scientists, Nobel-laureate physicist
Richard Feynmann singled out NASA testimony stating that the
"Challenger" explosion could only happen in 1 out of 100,000
launches.

Noting that US space shuttles had been launched
about 50-60 times up to that point, he asked how anyone could possibly
project odds of "1 out of 100,000", never mind try to pass it
off as "fact".

When I read about TCO on a configuration going
forward 5 years, I wonder if those people are on-call and wearing pagers,
or whether they know anybody who is...

security problem with 8i

2001-07-09 Thread Bill Conner

Hi All,

i am not sure if this has already been posted or not, but..

--29 June 2001 Oracle8i Database Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Security experts found and disclosed a pair of vulnerabilities in the
standard and enterprise editions of Oracle8i database. The Transport
Network Substrate (TNS) Listener has a buffer overflow vulnerability;
a flaw in the SQL Net protocol leaves the system vulnerable to
denial-of- service attacks. Patches are available.

Re:ODS

2001-02-28 Thread Bill Conner

i have used ODS, mostly to get data off the production server for report
generation,
but sense it was there i also used it to data loads into a DWH. This cut
out the
impact on the production server on the data scrubbing part of loading the DWH.

What about Mechwarrior or Quake II
Well i run quake II in linux with no problems.

, can I run that on Unix and will it run
smoothly?  This is a fun debate, but I do agree there will never be a
winner.

I believe I've seen a shareware version of that out on the web somewhere for
various flavors of Unix with X-windows.

Oh, and not only that, I like the GUI a lot more than I like command based
programming...unless.can you play solitaire on Unix:)

  From the URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/professional/solutions/overview/r
eliable/default.asp

  PCs Stay Up and Running
Memory conflicts and missing or altered system files caused many of the
system crashes prior to Windows 2000. To put an end to these problems, we
changed Windows 2000 memory management to reduce the chance that software
applications will interfere with one another.

Applications runing in a seprate memory area...HMM Unix did that 15
years ago.

  Fewer Reboots
Performing routine maintenance on your system requires significantly fewer
reboots, therefore less downtime, with Windows 2000. In addition, with its
support for Plug and Play, Windows 2000 automatically recognizes and adapts
to hardware changes. This means users can easily add hardware devices such
as scanners, DVD players, and speakers without rebooting, and with less
potential for user error.

Reboots are also reduced-and reliability increased-through the Microsoft
hardware device driver certification program. This program helps ensure that
hardware drivers are compatible with Windows 2000, and do not require a
reboot after installation. Certified drivers are tested and digitally signed
by Microsoft. If Windows 2000 detects a driver that Microsoft has not
digitally signed, it warns users about the risk before they install it on
their system

Not having to reboot after installing an applicationUnix from it's
beginings.

How Much More Reliable Is Windows 2000 Professional?
Third-party studies that assess reliability from three different
perspectives-lab-based testing, customer-site measurement, and user
perceptions-conclude that Windows 2000 Professional is the most reliable
desktop operating system.

  Highest Reliability in Production Environments
NSTL collected uptime data in the real-world environment of several
customer sites and concluded that the average system uptime between failures
of Windows 2000 Professional is 13 times more than that of Windows 98 and
three times more than that of Windows NT Workstation 4.0.

Notice no comparison to Unix. It's like people that hangout with socially
unacceptable people to make themselves look better (Hey! Wait a minute! Is
that why alot of people want to hang out with me? ). I guess you're right
they aren't the same. Unix posts much higher numbers.

Sorry, it's sarcastic Thursdsay here. I love the debate about Windows and
Unix. ;o)

The same prediction was made at least 5 years ago. At the rate
Microsoft is going, Windows will be a direct form of Unix. It becomes more
like it with every release.
