Re: Migrating RMAN catalog database to 9.2.0 and supporting 8.0.6

2003-09-11 Thread Chip
Trying to create an RMAN 8.1.7.0.0 catalog in an Oracle 9.2.0.3 database
ran into a PL/SQL bug fix. Oracle 9.2.0.3 expects the PL/SQL
specification default values and body default values to match.
Unfortunately, the RMAN 8.1.7.0.0 create catalog fails since the rman
package defaults do not match for 4 parameters.

Before I begin

I have an rman catalog currently in 8.1.7
it supports catalogs for databases in 8.0.6
I wish to migrate using database migration assistant to 9.2.0 and
keep the older catalogs in-place.
Will this even work or do I have 2 have more than one rman catalog?

Thanks,

Re: tuning question when you have a 3GL application

2003-08-19 Thread Chip
Just wondering if the Software Engineering Team can be taught how to run
their own 10046 trace (capturing the painful "part" of their
application). The Hotsos Sparky tool (free) can help the 10046 tracing,
including the automation of sending the trace file to the team for analysis.

The Hotsos profiler is ideal for analyzing the trace file.

The free trace analysis tools: tkprof and Oracle Trace Analyzer have
some shortcomings.

Your customer tells you that the database is slow, but won't
allow you the opportunity to correct it if that is the case?

As Cary says, your problem is not a technical one. It sounds as
if they don't *want* you to have the opportunity to prove that
the database is not the problem.

The Hotsos Clinic 101 is better the 2nd time around, especially with a
spiral bound draft copy of Cary Milsap's forthcoming "Bugs" (actually

RMOUG is close to home so I have already marked my calendar with
February 11-12, 2004 for Training Days.

After attending the 1st Hotsos symposium and IOUG-A Live 2003 this year,
I can readily understand Rachel Carmichael's decision to be the 1st one
to register for the Hotsos symposium in 2004. Due to hotel capacity

500 people (who are serious about Oracle system performance).

In terms of shows/conferences, #1 will be the Hotsos Symposium in March.

My #2 is RMOUG Training Days (www.rmoug.org) in February. It is held in Denver for 2

list). Granted, I'm biased (I live here in Denver), but the $$$s are good (less than
$400 for both days) and the speakers are excellent. Check out the local Oracle User

Re: failed to archive

2003-07-15 Thread Chip
In Oracle 8.1.7, a database can be configured with
LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES = 1
which starts 1 archive process when the database starts.
If the I/O response time for archiving a log takes too long,
then Oracle will automatically start another archive process.
The alert log shows the various archive process failures for
archiving a log. After the poor I/O response for the archive
destination(s) has been fixed, the database can be altered:
ALTER SYSTEM SET LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES = 1;
to shut down the extra archive processes.

the 9i releases, so i changed the book to say fixed in 9i.
To be honest I now agree with you, it doesn't make sense for selects to
be in the redo, although i suppose they could include them if they
wanted to.
At least for 9iR1 I am sure they are not included as I did some tests 2
or 3 weeks ago when i was writing a paper "detecting SQL injection on
Oracle" for securityfocus.com and selects were definitely not recorded
by logminer. I did not also dump the archive log to trace to see if
there was no select in it but at least LogMiner does not recognise
selects. I copied the list i posted from a file yesterday without
thinking i was perpetuating this issue even though i saw myself a few
weeks ago it wasn't true.
kind regards

Pete

Hello list
sorry to trouble you all so much,
I tried all that I stated below on another database I created, and as
long as I don't use an spfile , no problem. As soon as I start using
an spfile , I always get my backup shown as obsolete , irrespective of
the number of days (the value of n) I specify in ''report obsolete

Also a few more details , previously i was getting the problem on a

problem I stated above is on a 9.2.0.1.0 enterprise edition database
in archivelog mode with automatic archiving enabled. All this on

One of the historical reasons for having a non-zero

Walter - What you describe is the standard RMAN configuration. Box B
contains the RMAN catalog, therefore it must command the backup. And so
the
cron job must run on Box B. But the actual backup occurs on the target
machine (A in your example). If you back up to tape, you must have an MML
(Media Management Library). You can also back up to disk (that is what I
do).
Since the actual backup occurs on the target machine, not much network
traffic is involved. RMAN sends some commands, the target sends some
status
back, and that is about it.

Let me clarify what I'm seeking. In my example, I am using a centralized
catalog which is on its own dedicated database/server and backups are to
tape. BCV's are not involved.
Normally, in my experience, RMAN backups are initiated from the target
server via a cron job. But, I've seen a case where a cron job for an RMAN
backup was run from a box that was different from the database server
machine. I find this configuration strange and confusing because it
implies
this was done for a "reason" and makes life difficult to find out where
all
the backups are running from.

In the scenario of backing up the database on box A via an rman/cron job
on
box B, is this particular configuration more network resource intensive
and
therefore slower versus the backup being initiated from the same machine
as

Any suggestions?

Re: C++ Issues

2003-05-30 Thread Chip
From the Oracle C++ Call Interface Programmer's Guide Release 2 (9.2):

Oracle C++ Call Interface (OCCI) is an application program interface (API)
that provides C++ applications access to data in an Oracle database. OCCI
enables C++ programmers to utilize the full range of Oracle database
operations, including SQL statement processing and object manipulation.
The Net Services 9.0.1 client included with the Oracle 9i Developer Suite
can still connect to Oracle 7.3.4 databases.
Note: although Oracle 7.3.4 is not supported on Windows 2000, it can
be installed 1st (in default home using a Y2K compliant installer)
then peacefully coexist with later Oracle versions.
Have Fun :)

Post, Ethan wrote:

I am trying to track this down for a buddy, any ideas, I know nothing about
C++.
Thanks,

Our application currently has presentation programs written in Microsoft
Visual C++ that read Oracle Version 7.3.4 databases. We have Oracle
Professional/2000 installed on 1 machine.  The Pro*C/C++ pre-compiler
provided by Oracle is the method we use to pre-compile our program. This
pre-compile converts the EXEC SQL commands into C++ calls to incorporate the
Oracle Database functions into the programs. Other methods I have found in
research is to use OCI or ODBC calls. However everything I look at
indicates that we would need to rewrite our applications to utilize
additional include libraries as well as modify our SQL calls to wrap them
with the appropriate language elements.
We wish to fully utilize the functionality of the Microsoft Visual C++
Professional Edition environment to allow each developer to use their own
machine to compile and unit test these programs. However, I am unable to
get the pre compile process to work. Pro C will not run on our machines if
it is not installed. We get a "Incorrect environment variable. Please
reinstall Pro*C/C++" message version error if we try to run the copy that is
on the compiler machine from our machine. However, I can not install it
because Oracle 7.3.4 does not support Windows 2000 and the installation
process abends whenever I try to run it.

What we are looking for is a method to compile, debug, and unit test using
C++ on our machine without getting rid of Pro*C/C++ and yet utilize each
developer's machine more to remove the load from our compiler machine.

Depending on the OS, Microsoft has different CPU counts. The Windows
2000 family
counts each hyper thread as 1 CPU. In contrast, Windows XP and Windows
2003 Server
count each CPU instead of each hyper thread. Thus, the task manager in
Windows XP

enabled) while Windows 2000 Professional only shows 2 CPU's in the task

Re: Oracle Licences Req on Intel Xeon CPU

2003-03-26 Thread Chip
Depending on the OS, Microsoft has different CPU counts. The Windows
2000 family
counts each hyper thread as 1 CPU. In contrast, Windows XP and Windows
2003 Server
count each CPU instead of each hyper thread. Thus, the task manager in
Windows XP
Professional show 4 CPU's (on a dual XEON CPU computer with hyper threading
enabled) while Windows 2000 Professional only shows 2 CPU's in the task

Well, it depends on who you speak to and what day of the week it is.

Greetings Everyone!

I have a LOGIN.SQL script that I've customized to fit my
preferences. However, when I use SQLPLUS /NOLOG, it fails
miserably since there is no connection to the database.

Is there a way - other than undefining ORACLE_PATH - that the
LOGIN.SQL script can be skipped or ignored when using the
/NOLOG parameter?
Thanks,

This is probably pretty basic, so please keep in mind that Im a

developer

and Im trying to pick up more of the DBA side.

I am assuming that the preferred way to create a tablespace in 8i,

9i is as

follows(this is out of OTN docs)

CREATE TABLESPACE lmtbsb DATAFILE '/u02/oracle/data/lmtbsb01.dbf'

SIZE 50M

   EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL UNIFORM SIZE 128K;

When you use Uniform Extents you know longer have to worry about

tablespace

fragmentation correct? You also do not need to worry

minimum,initial,and

next extents correct?

What are some rules of thumb for setting PCTINCREASE(there is

another PCT

setting too right)? A DBA I used to work with said you should

almost always

use zero for PCTINCREASE. Could someone please tell me why? The

default is

like 40?

Is there a time when I should not use Uniform Extents?

Thanks... hope this isnt too basic.

Re: Oracle Performance Tuning Exam

2003-02-27 Thread Chip
Depends on the path chosen to Oracle 9i DBA OCP:
1A) Pass the 5 Oracle 8i OCP DBA exams, then pass the Oracle 9i DBA OCP
upgrade exam (total of 6 exams, but still does not need an Oracle
Univeristy course)
Note: if Oracle retires the Oracle8i DBA exams like the Oracle 8 DBA
exams, they would be available until May 2004 (5 months after Error
Correction End Support).

2A) Pass 2 exams for Oracle 9i DBA OCA (Associate),
2B) Pass 2 more exams and attend an Oracle Univeristy course (unless an
Oracle 9i DBA OCP exam was passed before Sep 1, 2002)

http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/index.html?certpaths.html
has the certification path information (Oracle has promised to publish
changes 6 months before implementation)

The Oracle 9i DBA OCM (Master) requires Oracle 9i DBA OCP, 2 advanced
DBA courses from Oracle Univeristy, and passing a 2 day hands-on exam
(using Oracle on Red-Hat Linux). While I agree with the continuing
education requirement, I disagree that Oracle University is the ONLY
place that offers high quality advanced DBA education. I wish Oracle
would count the Hotsos Symposium 2003 (and future Hotsos Symposiums as a
meeting the Master education requirement). In my meager experience of
Oracle conferences, the Hotsos Symposium has been the best education value.

Since my employer won't pay for OCM (cutting training budget again), I
would rather attend several conferences (and learn from many fine people
on this list) than spend $ 4,000 to $ 7,000+ pursuing 9i DBA OCM.

Realistically, OCP DBA only validates that someone can read and
memorize; I passed 3 of my 4 certifications without hands-on experience
using that version of Oracle. The exams validated I had spent some time
learning the terminology of new features, but offer no indication that I
know how to use them. As more hairs turn gray (silver), I can
appreciate why experience is needed and valued. Also, certification
does show an employer serious interest in becoming a DBA.

Have Fun :)
OCP DBA 7.3, 8, 8i, & 9i (yea yea I got the paper and the plastic, but
this list is far more educational and fun)

Alan Davey wrote:

If you are taking the 9i certification, there are only 4 exams that you have to take. Unfortunately, unless you took at least one exam last year and got "grand-fathered", you will have to enroll at Oracle U. for one of the four courses covering the certification exams.

Re: Oracle version??

2003-02-27 Thread Chip

My inventory logs (19 files, 16.6 MB) do have a verbose record of OUI actions.
Note: all the installation logs can be deleted to clean up space.  Also,
the inventory
logs only record OUI actions.  The Oracle 8.1.7.4.6 patch installation does
not
use OUI (the DBA manually copies many files into the Oracle Home), which
does
cause a mismatch between the inventory version and the actual version installed.

On the OUI opening screen, the "Installed Products..." button can be used
to
display the current inventory. Thus, I was looking in the inventory folder
trying to
guess what OUI is using.  Looking again, I found some more interesting folders:
N:\Oracle\Inventory\PatchSets\oracle.server\8.1.7.4.1\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\PatchSets\oracle.server\9.0.1.4.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\PatchSets\oracle.server\9.2.0.2.1\1\resources

The inventory folders does provide a way to quickly get an idea of the oracle
server version(s) installed by OUI.  Use the inst_loc registry key to find
the inventory
location, then look for "oracle.server" within "Components" and "PatchSets";
the
included folders have the version numbers.

Have Fun :)

Rajesh Dayal wrote:

  Hi Chip,

I am talking of log directory(N:\Oracle\Inventory\logs and not
N:\Oracle\Inventory\components), where every Installer action is logged
and not . This doesn't matter whether your Oracle.exe is replaced or
not. All of your OUI actions will be logged with all the relevant
information and typically the file names are of following format.

installActions2003-01-21_12-01-02PM.log

So if you put little extra effort digging these files (depending on
size, timestamp etc.) you can find out what is last activity you
performed on what ORACLE_HOME and so the precise patch level is also
available there...

And that YP-ZP I mean XP, I would really hate to see a
Oracle Database on that ;-)...

Cheers,

In the registry "My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\inst_loc" specifies the
location of the inventory folder (defaults to C:\Program
Files\Oracle\Inventory). Note: some Oracle patches
do replace oracle.exe without using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI)
so the inventory would have no
record of the patch (e.g. 8.1.7.4.6). Inside the inventory folder,
"Components" and "Patches" have folders
for components installed by OUI. For example, my inventory folder
contains these folders:
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\8.1.7.0.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\9.0.1.1.1\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\9.2.0.1.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\8.1.7.4.1\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\9.0.1.4.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\9.2.0.2.1\1\resources

Note: the version numbers (folder names) do match my OUI installation of
Oracle servers and patches.

When using Windows XP Pro, the properties of oracle.exe is interesting -
the version displayed near the
top is 0.0.0.0, yet the "File Version" near the bottom of the dialog box
does display the correct version.
Wonder how Windows XP Pro finds the correct version, while Windows 2000
Pro can't see it.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\inst_loc" specifies the
location of the inventory folder (defaults to C:\Program
Files\Oracle\Inventory). Note: some Oracle patches
do replace oracle.exe without using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI)
so the inventory would have no
record of the patch (e.g. 8.1.7.4.6). Inside the inventory folder,
"Components" and "Patches" have folders
for components installed by OUI. For example, my inventory folder
contains these folders:
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\8.1.7.0.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\9.0.1.1.1\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Components\oracle.server\9.2.0.1.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\8.1.7.4.1\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\9.0.1.4.0\1\resources
N:\Oracle\Inventory\Patches\oracle.rdbms\9.2.0.2.1\1\resources

Note: the version numbers (folder names) do match my OUI installation of
Oracle servers and patches.

When using Windows XP Pro, the properties of oracle.exe is interesting -
the version displayed near the
top is 0.0.0.0, yet the "File Version" near the bottom of the dialog box
does display the correct version.
Wonder how Windows XP Pro finds the correct version, while Windows 2000
Pro can't see it.

Re: ODBC and password expire messages

2003-02-26 Thread Chip

The Oracle ODBC 8.1.7.2 driver added a button (when adding or configuring
a DSN) to test the database connection.  If a password has expired, the "Test

Oracle 9i clients do not include the "Oracle ODBC Test" (c) 1996, which
could also issue SQL statements.

Note: the "Oracle Call Interface Programmer's Guide" describes the OCIPasswordChange()

I'm not ODBC literate. I can query a UNIX 9i DB using SQL*Plus from my PC
using a Oracle9i client, and get ORA-28002: the password will expire within
10 days. The 8i client (to a 9i DB) does not show these messages. Neither
does the 8i Oracle ODBC Test. I'd like to test a 9i ODBC connection from
the PC client. I don't see an Oracle ODBC Test for the 9i client ORACLE_HOME.
Is it still available? Should the ORA-28002 be passed back via ODBC? How

Re: Dealing with 3rd Party Applications

2003-02-26 Thread Chip

After learning how a vendor is (ab)using Oracle, perhaps an improvement request
can be
submitted back to the vendor with a better algorithm (that can be incorporated
into a future
release).  A patch to a 3rd party application changed its logon processing:
a table was created
(using a sequence number for part of the name), used briefly for storing
a 1-dimensional list,
then  the table was dropped before allowing the user to interact with the
application.  An
enhancement request was entered into the vendor's system about the serialization
being forced
by the logon change and suggesting an alternate method.  Note: ironically
the patch was done
trying to improve logon time.  Several months later, the vendor changed their
implementation.

Have Fun :)

DENNIS WILLIAMS wrote:

Darrell said: "Yes, read the vendor documentation, then scrutinize it."

Amen to both. The vendor may have a stupid method of using Oracle. But you
must understand their stupid method before you can work around it. Often
vendors assume the lowest common denominator in the DBA, and many companies
buy Oracle and an application without hiring a DBA. Neither Oracle or the
3rd party vendor will refuse their money. Sometimes the vendor will
discourage the use of something like partitioning because they fear the
novice DBA would be over his/her head with that and then the vendor reaps
the blame. But once you understand how the vendor uses Oracle, you are in a
position to be creative.

Jeff,

Comments inline...

So my boss comes over this morning and tells me that the users are having

  a

performance problem with a 3rd party application that have recently began
using. This is an oracle database where they bought the software and had
the system admin install the software which included the vendors

  instruction

of creating and setting up the database (basically use the defaults). It

  is

an Oracle 8.1.7 database on Windows 2000. He wants me to find out "if you
can create some indexes or something", etc. (he likes to give solutions
before the cause if discovered).

Good observation about your boss -- never forget it!

Anyway, I decide to take a look at it. The performance they are
complaining about is when they log into the application it takes about a
minute for their initial screen (which includes a list of values) to

  appear.

I use the tool that someone posted here a while ago, SQL Monitor from
www.fastalgo.com, and find that during the time the user is waiting for

  the

first screen the application is executing a sql statement about 2200

  times.

Excellent technique. Never used the tool, but you are responding to the
facts and symptoms, not conjecture and guesses...

The SQL is: SELECT PARENTID FROM PROC_ WHERE PROCEDUREID=:1
The bind variable is different for each execution with appears to be the
procedureid values from the table proc_. Table proc_ has 2203 rows.
I check the executions for the sql text in v$sqlarea. Executions =

  58,825.

(aha, I think this is the problem).
I explain plan the query and find that it is using the primary key index.

My tuning skills are still pretty basic. Since I have no control over the
application is there anything I can do to increase the performance of
running the query thousands of times?

Your tuning skills are not basic. You know enough to look before assuming
and you appear to know your way around an Oracle database.

It is not easy to tune something that is executing thousands of times,
except to work on reducing the cost per execution. How many "logical reads"
is each execution performing? Or, at least how many logical reads are
performed in total and what is the number of executions?

I have posted an Oracle8i AFTER LOGON database-event trigger in a script
named "tracetrg.sql" at http://www.EvDBT.com/tools.htm. You can use that
trigger to initiate SQL Tracing immediately upon connection by the user.
Are you familiar with SQL Trace and TKPROF? Hopefully, the parameter
TIMED_STATISTICS is set to TRUE in this database; if it isn't, you can
enable it in the TRACETRG trigger for the session (i.e. "execute immediate
'alter session set timed_statistics = true';") or using ALTER SYSTEM to set
it to TRUE for the instance. If you can set TIMED_STATISTICS to TRUE, then
please use the "sort=prsela,exeela,fchela" clause with the TKPROF command;
if it is FALSE, then please use "sort=exeqry, execu, fchqry, fchcu" clause.
This way, the worst SQL statements will percolate to the top of the TKPROF
report...

Note: whse_code and item_num could be removed from the UPDATE statement.

List Gurus,

I need help and I won't be ashamed to ask :)

Oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3

Here is what my data looks like in a table called item_w:

WHSE_CODEITEM_NUM LAST_COST
 -- --
HL1 111230 1.12
CPD-TWH 111230-OR 0
CPD-TGH 111230-OR 0

TWH-STAT 650300 0
CPD-TWH 650300-OR 0
CPD-TGH 650300-OR 0
If you'll notice, only the items with WHSE_CODE='HL1' have a cost
associated with them.
What I need to is:

Parse ITEM_NUM for those items which have a suffix of -OR in order to
compare with an ITEM_NUM without -OR so that I can take the last cost
from there and display it beside the one that has -OR. Also note, there
are some $0 cost items that don't have a suffix of -OR; I would need to
match those up with a cost as well.

So in the end, I suppose, this is the result I'm looking for:

WHSE_CODEITEM_NUM LAST_COSTLAST_COST_REV

HL1 111230 1.12 1.12
CPD-TWH 111230-OR 0 1.12
CPD-TGH 111230-OR 0 1.12
HL1 50034 0.91 0.91
MSH-CDS 50034 0 0.91
CPD-TGH 50034-OR 0 0.91
HL1 650300 4.789 4.789
TWH-STAT 650300 0 4.789
CPD-TWH 650300-OR 0 4.789
CPD-TGH 650300-OR 0 4.789
And if any of you out there use Cognos Impromptu, perhaps you could tell
me how I can achieve these results in a report.
Thanks in advance for your time,

Reading "The OFA standard: Oracle for Open Systems" could be helpful:
 http://www.hotsos.com/catalog/

An OFA compliant setup looks a bit different:
 $ORACLE_BASE=/db/oracle
 $ORACLE_HOME=/db/oracle/product/8.1.7

 The Admin directories could be:
 /db/oracle/admin/817db1
 /db/oracle/admin/817db2
 /db/oracle/admin/817db3

Each admin/817db# directory should have these sub-directories:
 adhoc
 adump
 bdump
 cdump
 create
 exp
 logbook
 pfile
 udump

The database file directories could be:
 /db/oradata/817db1
 /db/oradata/817db2
 /db/oradata/817db3

If more mount points are available, then /db could be replaced by other
mount points for database files.

I think more recent versions of Oracle have options for skipping corrupt

 blocks with exports.

 One possible way:
If you have a valid primary key index on the table, and the index is in
a
good tablespace, you might be able to cycle through all the primary keys,

select the row corresponding to that primary key and insert it into a new

table.  I was able to do this about a month ago with a 8.1.7 database.
In
my case, I think it was a block header that was corrupt, not data; so I
got
all the data OK.  It was rather slow, grabbing and inserting one row at
a
time; but I got all the data.  As long as I didn't do anything that would

cause a table scan of any kind, I could get the data.

By the way, rman not only failed to spot the corruption, but backed it up

AND restored the corruption!  My initial attempt was to just rename the

datafile at the file system level, then recover it from the previous backup.

I could relate another one of those TAR non-support -- total and complete

 NON-support! -- on this one.

Re: Embeded password in script

2003-02-24 Thread Chip
$cd ${STUFF}/log
$cat ../parms/dbimpl.Connect
connect dbimpl/[EMAIL PROTECTED] as sysdba
-- Optionally, could have sql*plus environment modifications
$cat ../sql/demo.sql
@../parms/&1..Connect
-- SQL commands
shutdown
exit
$sqlplus /nolog @../sql/demo.sql dbimpl
The unix permissions on the parms directory can be quite restrictive
(only authorized people).
The sql directory can be read only to the world (no passwords are stored
in any scripts).
The ps command cannot display the password, but can show what script is
running.

Have Fun :)

I have been tasked to write a script to run SQL. I don't want a password
field to be shown in the script. Does someone have run into this and have a
better idea? For example, I have following line in my script.
Sqlplus dbimpl/password @SQLscript.sql

Also, from command line we go through following steps to shutdown database,
how do I code these steps in the script?
$svrmgrl
SVRMGRL>connect internal
SVRMGRL>shutdown

Thanks in advance,
David

Re: general recovery scenarios

2003-02-22 Thread Chip
The "Oracle Backup & Recovery 101" book by Kenny Smith & Stephan Haisley
is worthwhile
(RMAN 9i syntax is an appendix). In contrast, Robert Freeman placed
RMAN 8i syntax into
an appendix. Robert's RMAN 9i book is the only one that includes
examples with 4 different
Media Management Layers (Veritas NetBackup, Legato Networker Module,
Tivoli Storage
Manager, and HP Omniback II v4.0) for backup and recovery using tape.

Also, Regis University offers an online course, MSCD 642 Database Backup
and Recovery,
that includes several practice scenarios (using Oracle at home or an
online Citrix Server).

Since you want to learn, how about getting Rama Velpuri's Oracle Backup and
Recovery Guide. I find it to be the *best* book on this subject. It also has
a number recovery scenarios for you to practice and learn.

crashing dbs recovery was totally heavy for me. i shud i have asked, what r
the different types of crashes and how to recover from them ? i mean, only
the general recovery scenarious. since i m learning, i just want to
understand the most frequent ones and learn recovering.
say like, Rich Jesse mentioned, recovering a truncate'd table from the
backup. something similiar, on those lines.
albiet, thanks for the earlier answers !

Re: SqlNet Response ports

2003-02-21 Thread Chip
Searching Metalink for "firewall" turns up several useful documents
(e.g. notes 131524.1 and 125021.1). The Oracle Connection Manager may
be worth exploring.

Just wondering how NMCI handles web page access. Also, a Citrix
Terminal Server (next to the database server) may be a possibility for
client/server (especially over a WAN).

Have Fun :)

Regina Harter wrote:

Hi listers,

Here is a question my client asked me, that I can't seem to find the
answer to on metalink, mostly because I am not sure how to frame the
search query. If you don't know what NMCI is, just know that it is a
government program that is establishing control over the network which
our database servers are on. Anyone have any ideas or advice for me?

TIA, Regina

Then, one of the NMCI technical guys mentioned that NMCI PCs wouldn t
allow inbound/outbound 1521 traffic (SQLNET). Hence, no NMCI user
would be able to use any client/server application. Wow, that s a
major problem. There are a few possible solutions.

1. Configure the database server to listen on port 443, because
NMCI allows 443. But, SQLNET uses random high order ports on the
return. Anybody know if you can configure SQLNET to use only 443 on
the response?
