RE: Apologies... linux & Oracle

2001-08-21 Thread Daniel Curry

SCO (Unix) was bought by Caldera who releases a version or flavor of
Linux. Caldera's main emphasis has been (historically) the desktop and
end users. During the Linux World conference in San Jose last year,
Caldera announced their acquisition of SCO to fuel their server line of
software products.

Sorry everyone, I know you were just discussing this recently.
What is the most stable combination of Oracle & Linux? What would you
recommend? I want to say the consensus was SCO Linux but I don't quite
remember.

RE: linux & Oracle -- best combination

2001-08-21 Thread Daniel Curry

Lisa and others,

About a year ago, I was working for a company as a Linux systems
engineer (Read as: Tech guy doing sales support). Most of our customers
wanted Linux systems, and it was my responsibility to provide them the
correct combination of Linux and hardware to meet their needs. I had an
ISO 9002 compliance to maintain as I provided testing and supporting
data to our clients.

My first test was RedHat linux 6.1 with Oracle 8.1.5. I don't have the
benchmarks any more, but it worked the best.

SCO Unix was bought by Caldera Linux and is not yet being implemented to
the full capability (IMHO).

Mandrake, SuSe, Storm were all tested as well, And had less
satisfactory performance and reliability.

Slackware 7 was the next best solution, followed by TurboLinux 6.

All of these configurations were tested on the same machine, completely
formatted and the same installation performed on each test cycle.

I hope this is helpful information.

Totally untested on my behalf as I haven't started yet but that is the

RE: Over seas online demo

2001-08-07 Thread Daniel Curry

VNC is a useful, free, yet insecure option.

Another would be Dameware (www.dameware.com). I use Dameware in the
office and in my home. The price is reasonable, it is considerably more
secure, and will install the remote agent on the server as a service,
provided you give it the right login information. A very nice tool for
Windows remote display.

If you are using a Win2000 server as the host, a simpler measure would
be to use MS Terminal Services.

I hope you find this information helpful.

RE: OT about to peeve off the vegatarians: RE: OT RE: Largest

2001-08-01 Thread Daniel Curry

This past weekend I had the opportunity to ride my motorcycle through
Watsonville, in mid California. Right on the coast, just a bit south of
Santa Cruz. The migrant workers were 'out in force' picking the
strawberries for this weekend's festival. A warm wind from sea on a
sunny day, mixed with the sweet-tart aroma of fresh strawberries, made
it irresistible to stop. It is fun (and very dangerous) to eat those
strawberries on a motorcycle at 60 miles an hour. But the basket did
not last long enough to get back into San Jose. About 45 miles until
the last berry.

Damn it was good!

Rachel,

When I worked at Rockwell in Anaheim (Southern California - sort of a
suburb of Los Angeles),
I used to drive right past a strawberry field every night on my way home
from work. Most of the berries
would be picked and shipped to market or wherever but there was always a
small stand at the
edge of the field where you could stop and buy direct from the grower.

It was strange to find a strawberry field in the middle of the city.
That
was fifteen years ago.
I'm not sure if it's still there - what with the high price of real
estate
in that area.

Anyway, the taste was just as April described it. Warm and damp and
flavorful. The smell alone
would make me stop.

Every summer I long for those strawberries and I've yet to find anything
close here in the Midwest.

Just a thought.

Use a command line process to create the report, then zip it with a

Hi

We are looking for a product that can be used to encrypt an Oracle
report. In
short a process will run a report, the file will be encrypted, and sent
by
email. And we would like to be able to use the product from command line
so that
the entire process can run automatically.

I have already looked at products from PGP but the only product that can
be used
with the command line option is PGP E-business server for about $7000.
The price
is way too high for the volume that we will have. I started to look at
other
products and found a few

Has anyone used an encryption product and can share experience, good and
bad?

Thanks

Witold

Miami,

Yeah I do agree with you, I was going by the cost of a house here
(Worcester
25M South of Birmingham) to the cost of the same sized house in Houston,
TX
where my former employer was based.. There was in fact a HUGE
difference!

Mark,
You are correct cost of living in states is less than UK.
However
the first on your list of examples is House prices. Generalisations can
be
made in all arguments but house prices differ hugely depending on
location.
ie, In UK north/south/London house price difference. I lived in NJ for a
few
years and have family in the DC area. Housing in parts of NY/NJ/DC/Md
can be
higher than southeast UK.

To Generalise : I guess if you earn $60pa you can buy as roughly as many
things as you can as if you are earning £60pa. (That's what 'cost of
living'
means to me).

I disagree with your disagreement :)

I would still say - like Lee - that the cost of LIVING over in the
states is
far less than over here - maybe not in the Netherlands (But I'd be
shocked
if it wasn't).

House prices, taxes, food bills, clothes, petrol, car prices.. The list
could go on and on.. You may have been on holiday, and bought all the
fun
things TOURISTS go for, but have you considered the cost of LIVING
there? I
have, and must say it has tempted me on more than one occasion - ALMOST
went
over a couple of years ago to be the web master for my former employee..
Then my great little bundle of joy came along.. Oh well.. one day..

I disagree ! The dollar is very strong these days. Maybe a few years
back
the cost of living was cheaper in Europe, but now things are different.
I
was on holiday in the States last year ... my bank account still suffers
:).
And now the dollar is even stronger than it was back then.

2001-04-25 Thread Daniel Curry

I am about to install Oracle 8i on an Ultra 10 with 2 9Gb Dirves and
512Mb ram runing Solaris 8. This will be for some very small development
databases. Any tuning tips for Solaris or Oracle I should be aware of?

Thanks

Oracle and Win2k

2001-02-20 Thread Daniel . Curry

Hello All,
Being the netadmin here (not the DBA) I am put in the position of
trying to maintain all my various platforms. The management staff has
agreed that everyone should be using the same software (great for me) and
Win2k should be on all systems (servers and workstations). What kind of
headaches can I expect on the DBA's NT4 workstation with the OMS console(?)
and OEM configurations, as well as the NT4 Servers that are running 8.1.6?
Thanks for any input.

Must choose between OEM or SNMP

2001-02-15 Thread Daniel . Curry

I have been given a choice. Let the DBA setup OEM and monitor the NT4
Servers we have Oracle 8.1.6 running on, or I can do all the monitoring
remotely using my preferred SNMP tools and MIBS. I do not know much about
Oracle. Which is going to be 'better'? We have our dev DB system to do
first, then the production server. What kind of impact can I expect either
of these tools to have on the server hardware or databases?

Thanks for aiding the extinction of ignorance.

SNMP monitoring

2001-02-13 Thread Daniel . Curry

Hello All,
First off let me say that I am not an ORACLE DBA. I am a net admin.
I have been asked to do some monitoring of our NT servers that Oracle is
running on. Does anyone know of any problems with running the default WinNT
SNMP service on the same machine as Oracle 8.1.6? Are there any
configuration issues I should be wary of before starting this?

Thanks for your tips.

RE: Linux as a production machine

Thanks. I have been saying this for years, but just not limited to Oracle
systems. Nice to have someone agree with you after years of saying pretty
much the same thing.

Subject:Linux as a production machine

Hi Dick,
A couple of campanies I consult for are using
Linux and Oracle (8.0.5, 8.1.6) as production
databases. Neither is really high transaction volume
but one is holding about 1.5 GB of data.

One install occured because Oracle on NT was choking
the box and the company did not want to buy new
hardware. I find you usually get a 20 -30% performance
boost with Oracle on Linux vs NT for the same hardware.

The 8.0.5 Linux release has some problems so I would
recommend the 8.1.6 release which is of the same quality
as all other UNIX Oracle releases (Notice I didn't comment
on the quality, just the similarity :)

Both machines are in archive log mode and show typical
unix uptimes (Months).

WARNING:
My original kernel is Slackware 1.2.13 (I think) and
I have maintained my own kernel and system for the past
5-6 years (Currently 2.2.14). This gives me an extremely
reliable (but custom) system. My builds are of better
quality than any commercial linux packages I have tested.

I would recommend Caldera over Redhat based on my tests and
what I have heard from other admins. The feeling
seems to be Redhat is going after the consumer market
while Caldera is concentrating on the server market.

In summary, Linux, once properly configured is quite
suitable as a production Oracle platform.
HTH
Dave
