Cache' Database

2002-08-13 Thread Ivan_Rivera
Title: Cache' Database

Hello all,

I am getting a new contract that will be dealing solely with cache database management.  Does anyone out there have any experiences with cache that they wouldn't mind sharing?  Pro's and con's, good stories, horror stories anything and everything is welcomed. I'd like to see what other oracle dba's have thought about it. I also would like to know if there are any list groups like this for Cache and/or any good websites besides the intersystems site? Thank you all very much. Ivan

I have some past experience with MUMPS - Run like h@#$ and don't look back.

If CACHE=MUMPS it most definitely is false advertising.

The why not run the SCOTT.sql script in the RDBMS\admin directory. That's the script to just create scott, and the table emp, dept and salgrade with their data. That's the original script If I remember correctly. Sorry for coming into the convo so late.

There are differences in the two scripts as I recall. The sqlplus demo
scripts
do not build the scott account, and only build the basic dept, emp tables
with
some data.

The utlsampl.sql script is much more encompassing, creating users
scott, adams, jones, clark and blake, granting privs, creating tables
with pk's and fk's. Much more complete.

Title: RE: financial problems with fatcity.com

Alex, that is an excellent idea! I second that notion.

I have learned just as much if not more from this list than the average $40-80 dba book out there (101 tuning and dba excluded, I've just ordered practical 8i and await that one). I think we can easily come up with the $500 a month figure, and that's this list alone. If you sum up all the rest of the lists...Bruce may be able to bring it down to 6 bucks a year maybe.

12 bucks a yearsh*t (Ladies forgive me here, I'm just a young buck trying to make a point) I've spent more than that for a lap dance and that was only to have someone rub an @ss on me, where you all have saved MY @SS literally more than once!!! This list is invaluable.  Put me down for 12 bucks a year. Ivan

ps. I by no means wanted to offend anyone, if so I am sorry and please forgive me. ;) Long Live the List!

I think that much better than voluntary contributions will be some
s*u*b*s*c*r*i*p*t*i*o*n fees - like $1 per month or better $12 per year. I
am sure that
everybody working with Oracle and living in US or UK or other developed
country can afford such fees. We will not need to charge people from
developing countries - I am sure these subscription fees will generate more
than $500 per month.

Off topic Perlesque question

2001-11-28 Thread Ivan_Rivera
Title: Off topic Perlesque question

I know this is off topic but if I can get grab you perl guru's ear for second I'd greatly appreciate it.  First I'd like to ask for a better place to post these types of questions.  A perl list would be ideal but my boss has explicitly said I can join no more lists - my mail box is getting too big :(.

os (I know here's the fundamental problem) : Win2K
perl: ActiveState 5.6.1.630
Microsoft C++ Visual Studio 6.0

Ok now to the problem.  I am having trouble using cpan to install certain modules/Bundles.
I have been able to use ppm to install most of the modules I need but there are still 7-10 that I believe need to be done through the cpan interface.  The problem I am having with cpan is when it's ready to compile the code it never works because of make problems.

I have tried to download nmake instead to see if that would work but to no avail.  I am making the correct changes in the config.pm file where it says make='blah blah'  but the command is always bombing out and thus if no make test it will not continue the real make.  Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? What else can I do?

I believe that the problem is in the syntax that cpan is using to compile things is not compatible with the windows version of make. The readme I used suggested to download nmake and use that but again the syntax seems different.

In the cpan error I see it doing:  make -f blah blah
but the windows make help command shows all arguments should be like '/A' and I havent seen an argument for force.  Does anyone know of a make out there for windows that behaves as unix in terms of syntax?

My ultimate goal is to get slashcode to run on this machine for a web site but have to do it on a windows machine.  I am terribly lost and don't know what to do next or where to look. Any advice would help thanks. Sorry for being so lengthy and off topic I don't know where I can post this and still be able to get a reply. Wish I could join an additional list.

Is there any file I can edit so that every time cpan calls for 'make -f' I can substitute it with a syntax my nmake command will accept? Thank you very much. Ivan

Well the boss is now getting on my back for me to upgrade my OCP to 8i.  I know, I know, I wasn't going to, please don't flame me, but work is insisting that I do.  So now I'm studying the upgrade book and it's sparked up a couple of questions regarding cursor_sharing = force.

1) I've heard a bunch of negative things (like bugs) regarding using this feature, was this just with 8.1.6 or is it still buggy?

2) Anyone out there using it?  Does it give that much better performance gains?  It seems to me like it's not worth implementing.

3)Can the guys playing with 9i out there verify if this is buggy in 9i?

Thanks to all.

I need some assistance ASAP.  Our nightly batch process seems to have hung up for some strange reason (ok no biggie my boss says kill it and start it again).  The problem is I have killed the processes both in oracle (sid, serial#) and also in unix. Now I can't see the processes in unix but in oracle they have a status of killed but are still holding the resources. My thinking is telling me the pmon is not waking up or not doing it's job. How can one manually tell a process to wake up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe it had something to do with our gateway and too many ORA-2063's happening. I'm going to research into what going on with the informix db's that pump the info into the oracle box. Title: RE: OT -- suggestions to ensure nerdiness in potential IT staff

I have to agree with Kevin, this thread is great. However it makes me feel like I really am in the wrong profession, at the wrong time in the wrong place :( .

In 1981 I was 5 years old and I've never really touched a computer until about 3 years ago, let alone know any of the answers to any of those questions.

You guys are great! I have learned so much from this list.  Not only the technical stuff but learning about the IT and dba culture from you all is invaluable!  I went to school for psych, so some of this old school talk that us young ones would hear from college cis professors I unfortunately never received, much less the knowledge of that curriculum.

I am speechless when I step back and look at this list and realize how diverse this list really is.  I mean we have list members from so many parts of the world and from so many different walks of life.  Who would have ever thought that this young Puerto Rican punk from the 'hood would have anything in common with you all?

I can see us all now at a bar after an oracle event, me in my baggy jeans, timberland boots, Iceberg shirt, etc. enjoying beers with you all. Everyone enjoying and sharing a common bond (dba, oracle) that brings us all together.  Most of you all's peers wouldn't even look our way or have two words for me and my friends in our natural environment. But I think I'd feel just as comfortable around you all as I do at a block party in Bed-Stuy or chilling with some of my friends in Liberty City, Miami.

All I can say the list is: I GIVE YOU ALL PROPS AND I GOT MAD LOVE FOR YALL! (translation: I hold you all in high esteem and greatly admire and respect you all). Thanks for everything. Ivan

Title: RE: OT -- suggestions to ensure nerdiness in potential IT staff

Famous...I hope at least recognized by my deeds.  It's funny this is coming up, I am currently in the middle of starting a dream of mine.

Basically I am starting a non profit organization designed to teach these hot in demand IT skills to a resource this country has overlooked-young inner city minorities. I know there are people already trying to do similar stuff and oracle has there program they're working on with high schools, but I feel that my business plan and ideas will be superior to what's currently out there, not to mention that I will have an execution plan these kids will latch onto, different from the traditional high school setting they're tired of.

I feel that I am an example of what I can do with them, as I said I didn't go to college for CIS, am not a super brain, but I had an interest in computers and also a hunger to make a good living (legally).  In the span of three years I have fully changed around my life.  I now make good money (I am currently putting my sister through college) and am living a great clean life. Oracle literally kept me out of jail (no need to go into specifics)!

I feel this IT route is a new alternative for inner city youth to make it out of the 'hood. This is a more realistic manner to a good life than the traditional routes of making it big in: sports, music, entertainment or going the wrong route and getting into dealing drugs. I am living just as good as most of the drug dealers I know or have come in contact with and being realistic here, these guys are looked up to by the younger kids in the neighborhood.  As a kid I always looked up to them and still see the same thing going on today. If I can get these kids to see a different way to attain the same possessions the dealers have (for the most part, that's what it boils down to-money and material objects) and get some in the IT field, I've done my job.

I have been teaching the DBA track here at FSU for the last in preparation for the stated above goal and have started to recruit people for the board and also to teach. Today, in fact I received the conformation that I have been given education consent from the New York State Department of Education (yes!), next comes the 501(c) and I'll be quitting my job hoping to get this thing off the ground. In fact Rachel I have had you in mind to ask to join my board but haven't approach or asked the board for input until I was 'official'. Sorry for ranting, any advice (good or bad) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ivan

Title: RE: Info=> Help tuning the SGA...

Looking at the scripts you are querying the best advice I would give is close and put away Niemiec's Book (Oracle Performance Tuning tips and techniques)!  It has some use, but if you are new to tuning and you said this is a learning process for you, then learn it correct the first time not the old "classical" way (takes way too long and not worth learning bad habits you'd have to break later).  Trust me on this one.

Next go and buy Oracle Performance Tuning 101. Now...go...buy!  IMHO it's worth every penny. Then get your free memberships from www.orapub.com and www.hotsos.com ,download every paper and article you can get for free and whatever free tools also.  READ THESE, the read em again.  That book and these two sites alone will put you on the right track to correct performance tuning/management and I guarantee you'll get way more bang for your tuning buck, not to mention the time you'll save and the bad habits you'll leave behind. Also check out www.vampired.net and www.ixora.com.au and any other list member sites/books (Jonathan Lewis, Guy Harrison). I don't mean to seem like I'm brown nosing the members of this list, but they really know their sh*t.

That is completely a myth.  There is no notable performance different with a
table with 10,000 extents and one with 1.

The only problem is when it comes to the bitmaps when dealing with LMT and
cluster when dealing with dictionary managed.  When you query the extent
views, or do space management type processes.

May be it is good practice to keep number of extents to be less than 50, no
matter what the size of extent.

Hello,

I'll do an reorganization of a database (about 140 gigs). Some people say
that it'd be good to use 128K, 4M and 128M extents. I saw somewhere it'd be
160K, 4M and 160M. Which size do you advice me ? I have also many small
indexes (less than 16K).

This thread has been very interesting and causing me to learn and go read some more.  Which leads me to my next question.  Does anyone have any good papers or urls that will discuss and explain all of the base data dictionary tables: fet$, uet$, etc.? Or anyone have a data model of how all of the tables relate.  I've only been in this long enough to feel comfortable with the data dictionary tables and v$views and have never delved into learning about the base tables, maybe it's time I do some serious studying. If anyone can point me into the right direction as far as learning this topic, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Ivan

As far as DDL is concerned ,Yes. I have seen Dataware House application(not
a good design) that dropping/truncating tables with lot of extents takes
longer time because of extent management. Such code must take into account
no of extents of such objects. If those objects are created with proper
sizing then it will perform better for any DDL.

Title: RE: Toad vs SQL Navigator

We have sqlnav here at my site, it's cool and all but pretty expensive.  I really liked ezsql and am sad to see it go away (damn shame).  I have a question, since it's no longer available for sale how illegal would it be for me to obtain a key from someone to use it?  I mean I'd love to pay the 100 bucks for it, but there seems no way to get it and I don't want to pay for toad.

Lets say some independent record company/band makes a great album and then 2 years later the band breaks up and the company dissolves.  Since there are no means for me to purchase the album anymore,  is it illegal to get a copy from a friend to enjoy it?

Instead of sqlnav I'd recommend getting pl/sql developer from Allround Automations www.allroundautomations.nl.  I first heard about it from Christopher Spence and when I checked it out myself it does everything that sqlnav will do.  The great thing is that it's only 150 bucks!  I'm sure there might be a couple of features in SQLNav that pl/sql developer lacks but IMHO it definitely wouldn't justify the price difference. have purchase EZSQL also which I liked(good and cheap). I guess there goal

eliminate the competition.  I have some experience with free version of TOAD
but not with SQL Navigator.
Can someone share there pros/cons,why purchase one over the other, etc. if
they have used both of these products?

I think the problem lies in the fact your missing a comma and a single quote:

shouldn't that be: "DECODE(:KAMPANJTYP_ID,'?','98','!','97', :KAMPANJTYP_ID)" ?

I could not find anwwhere is registry to set this.  My ultimate goal is to
