Database Scanner - Any good?

2003-03-10 Thread Jenner Mike
Hi,
My company has bought a product called Database Scanner from
Internet Security Systems (ISS). I have a meeting on Wednesday to see how it
can be used for our databases including Oracle.

Does anyone have any experiences or knowledge to share on this product?

Thanks in advance..

Regards,
Mike.

RE: 32-bit RMAN Catalog and networker interoperating with 64-bit

2003-03-04 Thread Jenner Mike
Title: RE: Purely for your amusement

Paula,
    We Use:

Catalog on Solaris 2.7 64bit
with 8.1.7.4 using 32bit oracle.

Targets are Solaris 2.7 64bit, solaris 8
64bit all with 32bit Oracle 8i. Also NT and W2K.
    Only
one target (solaris 864bit) is a legato client. The legato admin machine is
W2K.

No
problems for us. Rman is very particular , so do restore tests on anything you
set up.

Mike - Did you consider doing a recovery using just the control file? It
might sound odd, but even if you are doing a catalog backup, the backup
information is still stored in the target database's control file.

RMAN (non)compatability,

Recently I ran into a problem myself:
o Target DBs (NT & W2k) were at 8.1.7.0 and catalog (Solaris) was at 8.1.7.2
(backups controlled from here using cron).
o Test recovery scenarios completed OK
(Voice in head says, 'NEW TO RMAN, GOTTA TEST!).
o A couple of months ago some NT DBs were upgraded to 8.1.7.4 but RMAN did
not complain!
o Last week a restore of an 8.1.7.4 datafile was required but RMAN kept
giving an error including the text: "...PLS-00302: Component 'LOCKFORCKPT'
must be declared..."
(voices in head says, Got that CV up to date?)

Solution:
Luckily - we still had nightly cold backups that we hadn't got around to
stopping yet!
So I was able to do a full cold restore (Also luckily only a test DB)
Voice in my head says to me,
'MIKE THIS IS YOUR WARNING - UPGRADE RMAN CATALOG BEFORE A LIVE DATABASE
GOES SCREWY!'
I upgraded RMAN catalog DB to 8.1.7.4 and issued the upgrade catalog
command.

SOMETIMES INCOMPATIBILITY WILL LET YOU BACK UP BUT NOT RESTORE!
(Voice in head asks, 'RMAN - What is it good for, huh?'.

There's an RMAN compatibility matrix on metalink (a bit confusing)
and a note that is quite clear regarding 8.1.7.4. I've lost the doc ids but
a search will find them.

We are upgrading to 8.1.7.4. There are many databases and my
DBA college who is in charge of the RMAN Database that is
currently 8.1.6. tells me that it is no problem that RMAN (Seperate
database by the way) is in 8.1.6 and the Target is in 8.1.7.4.
As RMAN is hot topic right now and before I go RTFM can anybody
verify this or advise

thanks

RE: iAS 903 902 install

2003-01-20 Thread Jenner Mike
Barbera,
I, too have not touch iAS in the real world.
I was on the 9iAS R2 Oracle course 2 weeks ago though (thew!!).

I remember the instructor saying that the proper releases are 901 and 902.
904 will be out in spring 2003.
The version 903 is not a full release and contains just parts of 9iAS that
may be needed to install over 902.
Sorry but I can't remember what reasons there may be for needing 903 so
check thoroughly.

List:
I'm touching iAS for the first time ever. I don't
understand even basic stuff about it.

The install I have includes 9.0.2 and 9.0.3. The
install says "9.0.3 is the first J2EE 1.3 compatible
release of Oracle9iAS. ..blah blah.. Oracle9iAS
9.0.3 contains only the J2EE and Web Cache
Installation Type of Oracle9iAS and is compatible with
Oracle9iAS 9.0.2 infrastructures for clustering,
management, and security."

Do I need to install 9.0.2 and then install 9.0.3 on
top of it to get everyting I need?

We're currently in an evaluation phase. Developers
want iAS to deploy forms, portal, and build apps with
java.

I have 9.0.3 installed, but don't really understand
what I have, and we're not able to launch a form.

Thanks for any help!
(This is the most frustrating, confusing product I've
ever seen)

RE: RE: oracle or mssql

But this default mssql behaviour is the performance 'gotcha' where readers
block writers and writers block readers isn't it?

'Dirty reads' in SQL Server means that you can view records that have not
been committed. This is implemented by setting the TRANSACTION ISOLATION
LEVEL to READ UNCOMMITTED.

This is not default behaviour in SQL Server, the default TIL is READ
COMMITTED (for very good reason). I can think of very few situations where
you would want to see uncommitted records.

Dirty blocks in SQL Server/Oracle are the same thing ie. a block/page in
cache that has been changed but not flushed to disk.

It sounds like he is saying that, once an "insert, update or delete"
statement has been issued (without a following commit), then the records
acted upon are now considered "dirty" - i.e. needing writing to disk.

this is, of course, NOT what Oracle considers a dirty block.

I agree with you, Jared!

At least one of us has the incorrect understanding of 'dirty' reads,
or I am taking you too literally, or something.

What are you really saying?

Oracle does not allow dirty reads.

All queries are consistent to a point in time, the beginning
of a transaction, whether implicit (select) or explicit ( start
transaction ).

SQL Server and Sybase do not guarantee this.

The 'dirty' reads you are speaking of sound more to me
like sloppy programming.

Is that what you're referring to?

I would like to point out that what you call "dirty reads" are mostly
the correct reads. Oracle method IS the dirty read.

I am sure that your users does at least 1000 commits to every rollback.
So when oracle gives you the data it already knows that this data is
wrong. If you do the query again a minute later you will get new results
that were available when you did the original query but were committed
later. So you get a 1000/1 chance to get incorrect data.

The "dirty read" method, on the other hand, gives you the current values,
believing that they will be committed in a moment. So you get 1/1000
chance
to get wrong data.

Which odds will you bet on?

List,
I'm always keen to refresh on database comparisons so thanks for
everyone's pointers.

I'm surprised Oracle doesn't make more of an issue about their locking and
concurrency methods (i.e. redo/rollback/undo).

MSSQL seems to deal with it in two ways:
Default: readers and writers prevent writers from accessing data until
they
are finished with it!
Other method: no control, you just get dirty reads!

Anyone got anything to add to this? Or am I wrong?

- Mike.

As I said, use mssql ONLY if your boss is willing to be strapped into a
MicroSlop only platform. If he's even remotely thinking of using a
different OS
then you can't use mssql.

O/T - Disk IOs

2002-10-11 Thread Jenner Mike

Can anyone direct me to a method or tool for checking I/O on filesystems.

the problem lies with matching up device names given by iostat to filesystem
mount point names given by df.

I.e.
iostat -xdn
  extended device statistics
  r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device
.
  0.6 2.5 23.0 20.1 0.0 0.00.0 14.1 0 4 c3t5d4
  3.0 2.1 22.1 17.4 0.0 0.10.0 11.6 0 3 c2t4d0
  3.0 1.5 22.1 17.1 0.0 0.00.18.3 0 2 c1t0d0
.
(or iostat -x shows devices as 'ssd34'.)

I have Solaris 2.7 , veritas volume manager with non journalled filesystems.

I'm afraid that I have not been able to keep up with Unix sys admin skills
since I looked after SunOS 4.1.3 , HP-UX 9.7/10 and Apollo DomainOS
workstations.

Regards,
Mike.

RE: Backup Strategy - Informal Survey

2002-09-20 Thread Jenner Mike

An export with data will probably cause more headaches than it solves in
large DBs.

A logical export without data will also have limited use. It is quick to do
and small but I suggest may be invaluable for various tasks.

Robert,

I don't do exports of our large production systems mainly due to the
fact
that I'd have to export them to tape and getting that much quite time, so as
not
to bump in to an ORA-01555 or have someone else hit a rollback segment
issue, is
impossible. Consequently two hot backups a week are the norm around here &
we
guard out archived redo logs very well.

Now I do take exports of selected tables before they get modified or
mass
changed so that we have a point in time to go back to if all hell breaks
loose.

I'd like to pose a question to you all and get your response. If you are
running a database that is larger than 250GB, what place in your backup
strategy does a logical export have? Do you do logical exports at all, and
if so with what frequency? Do you feel that logical exports are an important
part of your backup/recovery strategy?

RE: Large enqueue waits.

2002-06-11 Thread Jenner Mike

Rob, Jared, all,
By the time I was able to investigate, the problem had disappeared.
No blocking locks and nothing unusual in v$session_wait by that time. I
guess I'll set up an automatic script to run perhaps every 10 mins that
checks and logs this sort of thing.

Unless anyone knows if this is remembered internally..

Hi to you all,

High enqueue locks.
This morning before I got to work there were a group of users who
appeared to be hanging at times when they should have been performing
updates to certain tables.
I tracked it down to what I suspect is high enqueue lock times. [details are
below. I don't normally see enqueue high in v$session_event or
v$system_event].
I've used Steve's scripts enqueue_locks.sql and enqueue_stats.sql but they
don't tell me anything that I can understand :-(
By now the sessions that were affected have logged out or been
terminated, so I can't put a 10046 level 8 trace on them.

Can I see what the enqueue waits were referring to?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

RE: oracle connection

2002-06-05 Thread Jenner Mike
Title: RE: oracle connection

I've recently encountered 3113 error e-o-f on com channel, and I followed it
through, using trial and error, to the setting of ORA_NLS33.

Oracle 8.1.6 installed on Solaris and Dev 1.6.1 installed separately. We
started getting the errors and need to specify

ORA_NLS33=/hmis11/oracle/1.6.1/ocommon/nls/admin/data
explicitly for our
server side scripts.
After speaking to
Oracle support on this, it seems they had the vague suggestion: set it to what
works !

Are you using MTS or dedicated connection?  If MTS, first
do a client trace, if that turns up nothing, just for
kicks try adding (SERVER=dedicated) to your client
tnsnames.ora file and see if allows you to log in by bypassing MTS.

  Hi,
It's another bad error to diagnose. But, there should be a
good note for ora-3113 at metalink.
  Also,
If Oracle can not know that a process is being terminated,
there will be no trace for this error. Because Oracle
will not have a chance to dump trace file.

RE: Legato oracle module.

Thanks to all tips,
I'll think about it. I may chose to do my own, as per Sujatha's
suggestion. At least I know where I stand, should disaster hit the machine.

Hi Mike,

I've been using the Legato/RMAN combination for a couple of years now. The
recovery catalog resides on the Legato Backup server. Once all the database
backups finish, we then do a cold backup of the recovery catalog database
straight to tape.

I don't know what others do, but this if you can afford downtime for your
recovery catalog db this is probably the best way to do it.

If you have enough disk space on your server, you actually don't need the
Legato plugin. Just dump the backups to disk and get the normal Legato
Networker server backup pick them up onto tape.

Regards,

Sujatha

Hi everybody,
I've taken responsibility of a couple of Oracle systems on NT (in

online using the Legato Networker Oracle Module. After checking the Legato
docs, it seems that the only way of using this module is by integrating it
with RMAN. is this right?
Now, I'm sure that RMAN can do a good and flexible job. I've played
with it a little but I don't like the meeesssyyy way of backing up the RMAN
catalog.
In the Legato docs , there's a section that warns you :

" Preparing For Disaster
  .
Ensure that your RMAN Recovery catalog is being backed up regularly.
  ."

Doesn't this imply that you need to perform the catalog backup
outside legato yourself?, so why did we buy it in the first place?
I know you could create another catalog to perform cross catalog backups but
that all sounds far to complicated and error prone.

Anyone have any tips for me?

Rollback usage.

2002-04-23 Thread Jenner Mike

All,
Thanks to those who reassured me and pointed me in the right
direction regarding 'dbv' wrongly reporting corrupt rollback blocks after a
7 to 8 migration.
For those interested: This is bug 1359160.
My initial metalink search did not show related notes for some
reason but I've found them now.
Question though, after shrinking the system rbs, the fix is to
access each rollback segment to convert it's header to V8 format however I
cannot get the first rbs extent corrected. Is there a reason for this and
does anyone have a solution.

System datafile corruption.

2002-04-18 Thread Jenner Mike

Guys,
I have a system datafile that returns dbv errors for a SYSTEM
datafile.

The fault has existed for a long time undiscovered so recovery from backup
is not possible. The database still does not exhibit any problems except for
dbv!
The errors are all 'Block Type = Undo data block', so I assume the fault is
in the system rollback segment.

I'm sure I can't drop/recreate the SYSTEM rbs, so does anyone have any
suggestions apart from a full export and import?

Dbv extract is below:

Legato backup.

2002-01-25 Thread Jenner Mike

Hey, just to confirm what I think is obvious...
For an oracle database to be backed up on NT with Legato: you need to
either;
shutdown, cold backup via legato, startup, or
online backup mode and legato's "Oracle database" extension,
[or some sort of strategy involving oracle export].

And to verify... legato's "backup an in-use file" extension used to backup
oracle database datafiles that have not been shutdown... will not give a
viable backup ???
A department that has not paid for my section's DBA services has just phoned
up with restore problems with a database backed up in this manner!

If someone could confirm the obvious, I would be grateful.

Regards,
Mike.

RE: Set Time Zone

Mike,
Here's a thing you may well be able to modify slightly to your
requirements. It will be useful only for running the application through
Unix. The following is taken from the .profile of an account I set up here

Hope it helps

Can't , not in 8i.
9i has introduced a TIMEZONE datatype where time can be reported offset by
the UTC+/- offset.

You'd have to build the logic in your application to increment/decrement
the sysdate, depending
on the user/client location (use a lookup table for location and
timezone-offset) when fetching
the sysdate.
SYSDATE would always return the date on the server where the database
instance is running.

RE: some DBA help.

2001-12-07 Thread Jenner Mike

Lalit,
Firstly, you should consider creating seperate instances for
developement and live data usage. It's bad practice to have any kind of
uncontrolled access to live databases such as developers (or even DBAs), no
matter how good they are - sooner or later it will cause problems.
To define 'types' of privilege and access rights to different users,
you can use ROLES. Basically you can assign privs such as SELECT to various
table to a role name 'CASUAL' (for example) and so on.

Your 'users' should not create or own any database object such as tables,
therefore any default tablespace you assign them will not hold data.
Generally I create a tablespace called 'USERS' and set this as defualt TS
for all users. The application objects and data will be available to the
users via privilages via the Roles and possibly via public synonyms.

Your questions are very general so I hope this helps.

Regards,
Mike.

Assume that you are starting a new database and that you need to start
adding user to this database. There are three basic types of users:
developers (who can create basically all objects in the database), data
processors (who can insert data into a given set of tables -CUSTOMER and
ORDER TABLE as well as updates these tables) and casual user (who can view
data from the INVENTORY and PARTS table). Assume also that every day there
may be an unpredictable number of users to be added to the different types
of categories. As a DBA, what can you do to make the task of adding user a
little bit simpler?
Would we assign developers and data processors to the same table space? Why
or why not?

Preferably based on the init.ora params sessions and

This is for a db running using MTS.

Hi all UK listers,

I was just wondering how many people from the UK on here have actually
registered for the 9i Open Day?

I think it would be a great chance to get together for a quick drink and put
faces to Signatures :)

Thoughts?

Contract rates are lower as well as permanent salaries and there is none of
the 'extra job security' applied to contractors.

However I work close to home and the out of hours requirements are minimal,
so I'm happy.

RE: [OT] Jobs in UK

2001-05-25 Thread Jenner Mike

Alex.
There have been more taxes and restrictions applied to UK IT
contractors in the last year or so prompting more people than usual to move
outside the UK for work. This has prompted the UK to grant more visas to non
British IT workers.
I don't know about the qualifications or details for gaining UK
working visa status, try searching the web for UK passport agency ,visa
etc..

I've worked in the US and UK and, as always, job availability dramatically
varies on actual location. However there is still a demand for quality IT
experience, including Oracle DBAs.

The main (only in my opinion) site is www.jobserve.com

Have fun.

Hi fellows,

Sorry for the offtopic but I had been in UK last week and my friends from
there told me that there is a shortage of IT professionals and , that if
you really got the skills , is very easy to migrate and find a job. But
none of my friends are IT professionals and I don´t know how much they know
from this market.

So I wish to know , if possible , from the IT professionals working in UK
if it is really easy to find a job and migrate ? What are the governamental
restrictions ? How much we can earn in a year of work ? Where I can find
more information about immigration to UK ?

TIA,

Hi all,
This brings me to a stupid question then. What is the true
difference
between a public and a private rollback segment? Because if I just think
about it like a normal human being I would think that if a user made a
Private rollback segment then only that user could use it, but of course I
know that can't be the case.

Nixon,

While SET TRANSACTION can be used to assign a rollback
segment to a transaction, it cannot be assigned exclusively to
that transaction as you have found.

The ability to assign a rollback segment to a transaction and
make it read-only for all others is something I've wanted myself
for many years, and I know it's been on the official 'wish list' of
requested changes by IOUG for some time.

Maybe 9i? Anyone know?

Oracle UPU, named user or site license?

2001-04-06 Thread Jenner Mike

Hi,
Question, particularly to UK list members,
A couple of months ago I recieved a quote from Oracle for some aditional
products and I was quoted prices based on UPUs. (diag pack and tuning pack
for Oracle standard edition)
I thought that named user was the only pricing method.
Are UPUs and named user licenses both available nowadays?

Alternatively, we have oracle in 3 separately licensed installations with
another one on the way. Before I get the runaround from oracle, does anyone
have recent experiences to share about site wide licenses?

Thanks,
Mike.

RE: OT : Sinclair was RE: Metalink Again

Ahh yes..
The sinclair ZX80,ZX81.. that's where I started, but the jewell was
the
ATARI 400/800/st/various other aliases as the years went by.

I started with a 400 (with the funny keyboard), then accquired an 800 with
more memory (32M?) and proper keyboard. I still say those machines were way
ahead of their time when they were introduced. I think I had about 50 x 5
1/4" disks with 'multiboot', to have approx 5 games on each side (I too used
the neat square holepunch to use 2nd side). Now that's a lot of games! Used
it for BASIC during my school exams , plus learning 6502, plus controlling
motorised robots via the I/O ports (yes, the joystick ports).

A good site for old Spectrum games:
http://www.80snostalgia.com/computers/spectrum/index.html
Also old kids programs ,all from an English perspective but many are U.S.
made.

I used to have a Spectrum +2? One of the little keyboards with rubber keys
and a tape drive! Still have it in the loft at my parents with all the
original games too! Damn how I used to love sitting in front of a screen
blinking red/blue/green colours at me, screaming like a drowning cat while
it was loading.

I must dig that out for a nostalgia trip! LOL.. Although I am more of a die
hard fan of high tech games though!! Quake, Half Life (Counterstrike)..

IBM S/390 disk config.

2001-03-23 Thread Jenner Mike

Hi,
Soon I will be installing Oracle 8i on various sections (LPARS) of
an S/390 Multiprise 3000 server. My entire experience is of UNIX on
Sun/HP/Alpha/NCR.

My main reservation is from the RAID-5 comment in IBM's Internal Disk
Performance white paper which describes:

'.. The Internal Disk feature of the IBM S/390 Multiprise 3000 Enterprise
Server allows for the attach- ment of up to 792 GB of RAID-5 disk storage to
the internal IO bus ..'.

Anyone out there have experience of this config?
Is it possible to use another RAID level config?
Any other gotchas for Oracle 8i (probably 8.1.7, don't know yet) on IBM's
S/390?
Any recommendations about sizing the disk read cache (up to 2GB) compared to
allocating that as extra Shared_pool and buffer cache?

Thanks for any opinions,

Mike.

RE: Anybody using Network Appliance Storage boxes with Oracle?

2001-03-21 Thread Jenner Mike

When I spoke to some technical Netapp people on their stand at the UKOUG in
December 2000 they explained that they are able to gain Oracle certification
by the way their filers
do 'a write confirmation over NFS' (as you put it), which regular nfs does
not do.

I know a site that uses two full height rack units full of Netapp stuff
(don't recall the model numbers) for IO intensive work but they do not use
oracle. They are generally very happy with the performance and snapshot
capabilities.

Regards, Mike.

I'll try and share some of what I've been told by the NetApp reps. This
info is a year old. The NetApp box itself is a very trimmed down version of
BSD that handles only the networking and disk i/o stuff. Specifically
compiled to work with their controllers. It talks to both NFS and NT
natively (their own addition). The drives are managed in a specially tuned
RAID3 configuration. They say that the disk assignment stuff is not
critical because of their caching (sort of the same argument that EMC uses).
The NetApp box does a write confirmation over NFS as soon as the cache is
updated (???) or something like that. This supposedly is how it can
interact with Oracle and store datafiles on an NFS mount. I certainly may
be wrong on some of this. Its been a while since I've wandered into that
territory.

Hi there!

Is anybody out there running Oracle on NetApp Storage Networking box?

I was told by some NetApp guys that using their boxes we don't have to worry
about distributing datafiles, RBS etc. across the disks because the NetApp
OS takes care of all that.

Any comments?

Thanks,
Helmut

Oratab and ORACLE_HOME.

2001-03-13 Thread Jenner Mike

Hi,
Here's a question that's been bugging me..
If I've got Oracle DBMS installed on
/oracle/product/8.1.5
and Designer 2k installed on
/oracle2/1.6.1

Which one do I set my ORACLE_HOME to? and which location goes in my oratab
file? Whichever one I set, I guess I need both locations in my PATH but what
order?

[I'm on Solaris 2.7 if anyone cares]

Thanks,
Mike.

RE: OEM - Tunning Pack, Diagnostic Pack....

2001-03-13 Thread Jenner Mike

Hi,
I was quoted ?15,000 plus yearly support for tuning pack + diag
pack. This was for 2 DBA seats but I think they based it on UPUs since they
checked my platform and CPU figures. Anyway It was too expensive for my
site.

You would think that Oralce would price the product low to encourage easier
database tuning and maintenance, which would improve product performance and
image.

As far as I am aware, the pricing for OEM is per seat, so whoever uses the
product will have to be licensed.
Also remember that base OEM is free.

That is not what they told us (starts to be very tricy)!
It seems, that for the OEM, licence is based on the number of users.
Since we have only few DBA. we thought (at the begining of the story) that
this shouldn't cost so much money. Soon we discovered it is not so.
Who is right (now this licencing things start to be VERY complex)?

Oracle has prices for this product based not on users (at least server
part - OMS) but on power units.

RE: Priority Paging on Solaris

2001-02-12 Thread Jenner Mike

Hi,
I spoke to Sun support in detail to find out about this parameter.

I'm on Solaris 2.6, generic patch Generic_105181-16.

priority_paging is default in solaris 2.7 and up but not in 2.6. It is
recommended for virtually any solaris 2.6 system since I'm told it may have
benifits but has no drawbacks. Sun did not mention any performance, just
that the OS handles memory 'better' under certain circumstances.
You must be on generic patch at least Generic_105181-09 (which I guess
anyone should be on because it is quite old).

Regards,
Mike.

Yes and Yes.

Also, the document skips over some other parameters you should set in
addition to priority_paging=1

Check
out
http://www.unixinsider.com/unixinsideronline/swol-07-1999/swol-07-filesystem
3_p.html

which lists these also:

set fastscan=131072
set handspreadpages=131072
set maxpgio=65536

Finally, please note that you didn't state what version of Solaris and what
patch level you're at.

We're at 2.6 and have the necessary kernel patches.

J

p.s. As to how much performance increase, well, we only had the
priority_paging =1 enabled up to this point, the other parameters go in on
Sunday. if you email me next week I'll try and get you an update.

RE: On-Call - terms, conidtions and perks!

2001-02-08 Thread Jenner Mike

Sean,
Interesting point and getting more valid all the time, as you say.

I've worked in places where :
1) there was a laptop/pager provided but no renumeration (7 years ago, I was
a junior DBA - didn't know any better!)
2) Rota of call out with (UK pound equivalent of) $6 per weekday, $8
Saturday, $10 Sunday with
mobile phone and laptop and pay for any time worked over 1 hour.
3) On-call requirements with mobile phone. renumeration = 1 hour's pay for
each 24 hour day of cover (wekday or weekend) plus pay from leaving home to
getting home when it was necessary to be at work.

I think that 1) above is unacceptable in todays financial requirements for
24/7. Somtimes arranging my life arround a possible call-out made $6-10 per
day did not seem worth it but I'm a contractor so it was part of the job
when I took it. If I were an employee being asked to provide on-call cover,
option 3 plus laptop is pretty much the minimum I would look for.

Hi Folks,

Our company has inidicated it's heading for 24 x 7 operation. So informal
talks are taking place about the new "challenges" this brings regarding
having staff on call to support IT systems. I would very much appreciate
your feedback if you are in an on-call environment as to what the terms,
conditions, and perks (if any) you get for same.
Some specific information I'm looking for is:
- How frequently are you on-call and for how long and to cover what hours.
e.g. one week a month from 22:00 - 06:00.
- What tools are you given to support this process. e.g. pager, laptop for
remote dial-in, cell phone.
- Whats the procedure if you "get the call". Do you dial in initially to
try to resolve, that failing go on site, in other
  words the escalation process
- What renumeration or other benefits do you get for being on call.
- Are there additional 'benefits' if you are called whilst being on call.

I'll treat any replies where requested with strict confidentiality.

Sean :)
