Re: Help - DBA interview questions I faced

2001-12-25 Thread Jenny Jacobson

What I have found is that interviewing for an Oracle DBA job is quite
different from doing the actual job. I've been a contractor - and had to
interview after each gig was over.

My job consisted of "action" -
entering the commands, people skills, collecting useful scripts "just in
case" - and using them shortly afterwards.
When a situation came up, it meant going through my spreadsheet of
resources collected over the years.

For interviewing, it can be more theoretical "bookish" -
1. What are the four essential background processes and how are they used.
2. How is an "outer join" different from an "inner join".

I liked the interviews where they told me about their project, and
I told them how I could contribute - strengths and weaknesses.
I'm great at *. I don't know much about YYY, but I'm willing to
learn.

We cannot know everything. On my last project, we had seven Oracle DBAs.
Each one had something to contribute. Sometimes I'd know something that
the most seasoned, knowledgeable DBA would not know - because they had
not learned new extensions to existing commands.

What I do with difficult interviews - when I haven't done well, is to
write down the questions as they are being asked. Research the answers,
and be better prepared for the next interview. That's how I got my
start in DBA-land. I eventually knew most of the answers to most
questions. I even discovered DBAs who had the wrong answers to their own
interview questions. What can you do - just keep in mind you're dealing
with human beings.

You will end up at the job that is best for you - and the client.

Rachael,

In 1996, I moved from Minnesota to Houston Texas (Katy). By the time
summer rolls around, you get used to the humidity. It's like getting

IMHO: If recruiters can post jobs, each of us can post our need for a job.

However, sending a resume is unnecessary. If someone is interestered,
they can contact the poster privately and request a resume.

Re: OFF TOPIC: My Unix mail file is too huge to access

2001-05-24 Thread Jenny Jacobson

Thanks to all who replied. I received some very helpful ideas and
new knowledge. Charlie Mengler came up with the solution I used:

1. Use vi on this huge file to find a place to split the file.

2. Then issue the command:

cat jenny | head -153498 | > jenny153498

3. Place the new jenny153498 file in the directory of PINE folders.

4. Use PINE and view the messages in the jenny153498 folder.

Thanks.

OFF TOPIC: My Unix mail file is too huge to access

2001-05-24 Thread Jenny Jacobson

Last fall I stayed away from the computer for a long time -- nice
vacation. When I went to read my email, I had over 6,000 messages. I
started reading and deleting away. Got knocked off the net without
exiting. This happened several times until I was no longer able to bring
up my email in PINE on Unix.

I saved the mail file and let the system continue in a new file.
The old mail file is 30 MB. Now I have a stable environment.
How do I get into my old mail so I can 1) delete old messages and
2) access a VERY important email that I need to use.

I don't think my unix account has a pop3 server. Someone suggested I ftp
the file to my PC and read it there. When I did a file command, it said
the mail file was ASCII text, but my important email has an attached Excel
spreadsheet. Do I ftp in ASCII or binary mode? I don't have any mail
software on my PC (I use a shell account and Yahoo). I don't want to use
my Yahoo account to process this huge file via pop3.

How do I access my important email in this old mail file?

Thanks.

Re: Should each partition have it's own tablespace and datafile?

2001-04-12 Thread Jenny Jacobson

One tablespace per partition.

If you're not sure of the final size of the partition,
consider putting each tablespace file
with autoexend ON and specify max filesize (MAXSIZE).

For example: if partition extent size is 10M, the autoextend value could
be 100M to have room for 10 more extents. This tip helps avoid a lot of
wasted space AND/OR getting calls in the middle of the night to make the
filesize larger. Be sure the autoextend does not attempt to extend
the filesize beyond the capacity of the disk. Sizes chosen would
depend upon your knowledge of the partition size needed to hold the data
and your strategy. Could also autoextend at 10M, but performance would
be affected if a lot of new extents were added during a load.

Syntax:
CREATE TABLESPACE CUST_DATA_0401
   DATAFILE '/u5/oracle/oradata/data/cust_data_0401.dbf'
   SIZE 100M
AUTOEXTEND ON
NEXT 100M
MAXSIZE 500M;

and the corresponding index - file size dependent upon how many indexes
present on the table and how large the column sizes are. If you have
five indexes (in a datawarehousing environment), the size of the index
tablespace COULD be larger than the corresponding data tablespace.

CREATE TABLESPACE CUST_IDX_0401
   DATAFILE '/u06/oracle/oradata/index/cust_idx_0401.dbf'
   SIZE 50M
AUTOEXTEND ON
NEXT 10M
    MAXSIZE 300M;
