RE: Oracle 9.2.0.1/2 on Mandrake 9 - solved

2002-11-14 Thread Jim . Conboy
I've been told the same thing, but the reasoning was that they couldn't guarantee what
was put out for download was actually the correct build. Not sure that's very
reassuring, either.

Oracle Corp. finds the checksum concept to be alien. They actually
posted these words to me in a tar at metalink, "We don't support
servers that are installed via download from otn." I guess "network
computing" really is dead. ;)

Look
for port conflicts between the Apache installed with 9iAS and the one with
9.2.  If you're using web cache on iAS check the port that is using
also.
Are
you using iAS Release 2 (9.0.2)?  If so, and both the infrastructure and
mid-tier are on the same server, they will each have their own orahome with
apache.  iAS Release 2 is smart enough to keep its various apaches, etc on
diffferent ports but the 9.2 DB install might not be.

RE: SAP and Oracle

2001-10-29 Thread Jim Conboy

Kimberly-

When we went to SAP about 5 years ago our SAP license came with limited use
Oracle licenses.  This covered all the users of SAP, although in truth only
the SAP superuser actually connected directly to Oracle.  The license did
not allow creation of additional schemas in the Oracle instance.  You can
create additional objects in the SAP schema, but I think technically you must do
so using SAP-supplied tools.  And of course you can't transfer them to a
different application.

Sometime over the last two years I've heard that this arrangement had
changed, and that we had to get our usage licenses directly from Oracle.
But since we had a corporate agreement with Oracle which covered these users
anyway I never pursued that issue and can't vouch for it.

Oracle when using SAP?  Sometimes, when a vendor

RE: Java in the database

Do you have first-hand experience with the performance of Orion, either
within iAS or as a stand-alone servlet engine?  The '5x faster' seems to
come from an Oracle source, which I suspect is referring to Java stored and
executed within Oracle.  I'm not sure whether Orion as a stand-alone
product can make the same claim.  Then again I'm a DBA, not an experienced
Java developer, and am finding it a bit confusing to wade thru the
alphabet soup.

I have a 3rd-party app to install that needs 'any J2EE-compliant' java
servlet engine.  I'm looking for something that will provide good
scalability at a good price.  The price is right, if Orion scales well then
maybe I won't need iAS for this server since I don't need all the other goodies
that comes along with it.  If you have any real-world indications of
scalability I'd appreciate hearing from you.  Thanks.

Take a look at

than Web Logic, I would wonder why people would use others.  And OAS9i uses Orion as the core
now.

Seemed fine when I tried it (and thanks for the idea!).  The trick
with the indexes is that the ones on the partitioned table have to be local,
which was in the scripts provided, and the 'exchange partition' had to say
'including indexes', which was not.  Adding 'including indexes' made this
work like a charm for me.

I
couldn't verify that the non-partitioned indexes become unusable after
exchanging the partition for the normal table.  In the sample I posted
I snipped the output of the queries on USER_INDEXES and USER_PART_INDEXES,
but my tests showed that they remain valid.  I'm curious to see why
your results are different.  Can you post the spooled output of your
test?

RE: providing 24*7 database ---
We use a modified version of your duplicate schema
idea.  But we don't have the objects in different schemas.  We use
partitioned objects so that we can exchange the partitions with the
production tables at a scheduled time.  The voodoo is that we use a
single range partition of MAXVALUE and all indexes are LOCAL
PARTITIONED.  The partitioning key doesn't really matter in this setup
since we aren't using the features for its advantages, just to be able to
swap data and index segments on the fly.  I've attached a transcript
showing the actual sequence but I'll give you a short explanation
first:
There are production tables/indexes that are used by the
application, whether directly or via synonyms.  There is a second set
of tables with a _TEMP suffix that have duplicate structural definitions
(constraints, column names and data types, etc.)    The
indexes also end with a _TEMP but are identical to the production
ones.  The only difference is that they are partitioned
tables/indexes.  All partitioned objects have a single range partition
by a bogus column.  The single partition is bounded by the MAXVALUE
keyword, so all of the data is contained in one partition.
Now you can manipulate the _TEMP tables at your convenience
without interrupting the access tot he "published" objects.  Once you
have refreshed your _TEMP objects and are ready to publish the new data your
would execute a series of ALTER TABLE _TEMP EXCHANGE
PARTITION TABLE .  That's it.  No re-pointing of
synonyms, revalidating of views/stored procs./etc.  The application
keeps chugging along.  The next execution of SQL will use the published
tables.

RE: Select only one of three tables

2001-07-03 Thread Jim Conboy

This could get ugly.  I'm thinking the decode/outer join method won't
work because there's no table you can reliably use as a base for the outer
join.  How about:

select emp_id, dept from dept_one
union
(select emp_id, dept from dept_two minus select emp_id, dept from
dept_one)
union
(select emp_id, dept from dept_three minus
    (select emp_id, dept from
dept_two union select emp_id, dept from dept_one))
/

and then go for some coffee if these tables are large at all.

Hello listI have a scenario in which I have to check three
tables. If there is recordintable A, take it otherwise check table B, if
there is record in table B,takeit otherwise check table C. Let say I am
looking for DEPT column and thetablesare DEPT_ONE, DEPT_TWO, and
DEPT_THREE. At the end I need only one DEPTcolumn. While I can check
each of the tables in order I would like to do it in onestatement. I have
tried DECODE but it did not like combination of count andcolumn names -
error ORA-00937. To make it simpler here is my query from twotables
only:select  decode (count(d2.emp_id), 0, d3.dept, d2.dept)
dept  from dept_two d2, dept_three d3where d3.emp_id =

Not sure how this message looked to
everybody on the list.  When I rec'd it, all I could see was the ALTER
statements.  But I know that the create statements and direct loads work
also.  When I went to reply as such, lo and behold the missing
create/direct load statements appeared as they should.  Just wanted to
point that out, because Joe as provided the definitive answer, but only if you
can read his entire response!  Weird.

Other SQL

RE: Speed up massive delete

2001-06-28 Thread Jim Conboy

Well, that IS true (actually I think
its NOLOGGING for index creation).  But if you have massive amounts of
INSERTS or DELETES, dropping the index first and then re-creating can
help.

If the number of deletes is truly
large, and you've got spare disk space, and the table can be off-line for a
while, you might try CTAS (create table as select) using UNRECOVERABLE, to make
a second copy of the table with just the rows you want to keep.  Then drop
or rename the old table, rename the new table, and re-create the indexes with
NOLOGGING.  In removing 3 million rows from a 9 million row table this
method was very fast compared to DELETE.

No, buffer is ignored for
DIRECT=Y.  But RECORDLENGTH should be set to DB_BLOCK_SIZE, or a multiple
of it.  I've had dramatic gains in performance doing this.

Also, pre-8i you couldn't do
direct-mode export of LONG fields.  As of sometime in 8i you can (I know it
works in 8.1.7).

on the back when it works. And today on three separate occasions it was downright
snappy. Anybody else have a similar experience or have I just been inhaling
controlled substances again?

Re: Oracle license costs

2001-03-23 Thread Jim Conboy

Chaim-

I managed to save hardcopy but not soft, so I can't send it but I can comment.
Actually, I was surprised at how little difference there was between Oracle and
SQLServer at moderate usage levels assuming these numbers are accurate and you're
using a similar server configuration. At 100 users Oracle was ~64K, SS was 50K, but
Oracle upgrades are included in support costs while you have to pay 50-75% of new
price for SS upgrades. SS support is priced per call, such that after 4 calls per
month Oracle support is cheaper. At 200 users you see more of a difference (127K
Oracle vs 50K for SS) and support breakeven is after 9 calls a month, but if you
upgrade SS at the 50-75% additional cost the difference starts to go away again. The
big difference is as you scale the ladder of licensed users because SS gives an
unlimited user license, but of course if you have problems getting SS to climb that
scale then no amount of $$$ will be enough. I don't have direct experience in that,
but if you have to buy 5 'low-cost' NT servers (and presumably 5 SS licenses?) to
replace one Unix server the economics could get ugly.

Long live free-range fresh-air chocolate-covered Canadian ants!

List,
Recently there was a discussion concerning the cost of Oracle licenses vs MS Sql
Server licenses wasn't there? That discussion was not an issue at my job - until
today which is why I'm wondering if there were any postings that in any shape or
form justified some of the price differential between Oracle and MSSQL? If so,
could someone forward the arguments to me? I would appreciate it very much.

I admit that in the last little while, I was deleting (a little too quickly)
everything that had nothing to do with ants, canada, chocolate factories and
fresh air.

I think what's really needed is a dba certificate program based on the postings
of this list which would of course include off and on topic material.

Thanks

I had a short gig setting up a database in Tallahassee State prison. They
had the prisoners entering data for underground utility lines. I had to
train the DBA who was in for 10 years for 3 counts of assault and battery.
That was like being on another, very bad, planet.
If anyone has any intrest in commiting crimes (unless you're a certain

RE: Long Problem??

Might find the URL below useful. Its a perl script for selecting or inserting LONG
RAW but you should be able to adapt it without too much trouble.

Maybe you can do it from within PL/SQL -- the maximum for a string literal
in PL/SQL is 32K.

The only alternative that I know of is to use ProC or another external
program. Anyone else know?

Re: Listener consolidation

2001-03-13 Thread Jim Conboy

Stephen-

What kind of errors did you get? Off the top of my head I believe 8i's tnsnames.ora
syntax requires you to call your connection data a service_name instead of a sid.
Probably some other minor but critical changes to how the config files work. Not sure
why tnsping would work and other stuff wouldn't but I don't know what error you got.

Jim

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/12/01 06:46PM >>>
Hi all:

Our listeners have evolved over time, whereby when we moved from 8.0 to 8.1, a new
listener was created to support this instead of having one listener listening to all
databases of different versions. We are trying to consolidate so that we only are
running one listener (8.1) and it is listening for 8.1 and 8.0 databases. I also just
found out we may need to also include a 7.3 database.

Our initial test today gave us all kinds of problems where when we moved an 8.0.4
database out of the 8.0 listener into the 8.1 listener, it wouldn't allow sqlnet
connections. However TNSPING worked just fine.

Does anyone have any hints for doing this?

FWIW, consolidating to a single listener is only the first step. Once we are
comfortable that this process is working well, we are going to begin moving all db's
that will support it to LDAP.

Help? Thoughts? Guidance? All would be appreciated greatly.

Deployment of Oracle Client

2001-03-12 Thread Jim Conboy

How do most organizations deploy sqlnet client to a large user base? We've currently
got hundreds, maybe thousands of users with various versions of the client installed
on their desktop. We're also about to roll out Windows 2000 to a large percentage of
these users. In testing we've determined that earlier desupported client versions
(7.3.4 and such) seem to work on W2K with the apps currently deployed. I'm not happy
with a "cross your fingers and hope" approach and have been pushing to get most users
up to 8i as a client. Ideally I'd like to have something the users can download and
install from the intranet. In searching technet downloads all I find is the entire
bloated 200MB Oracle Client as a download - much too big for our remote users to
download and install. All I want is the Net8 pieces I'd need for sqlworksheet, or
TOAD, or an ODBC connection, so that the download and install time would be within
reason. Anybody have suggestions? How are people on this list deploying Oracle apps
to many users? Thanks.

Re: (Fwd) Oracle's Savings Don't Add Up

2001-03-09 Thread Jim Conboy

Well well well.

I'm quite distressed to hear that Oracle's been shutting down and selling off servers
like mad, but Metalink doesn't have the hardware it needs to run smoothly. And some
of their 'savings' are not spending less but keeping costs growing slower than
revenues. Reminds me of when my wife 'saves' a bundle on furniture, hard to retire on
that kind of 'savings'. But on the whole Oracle's cost-cutting seems pretty
impressive and I don't think they deserved the negative headline. If it keeps my
bills from climbing even higher I'm all for it.

Oracle's Savings Don't Add Up

Don't buy into Oracle's claims that it's saving billions of dollars by implementing
its own e-business software. Much of the savings actually have come from cost-cutting
measures that could have been achieved without the Internet, according to experts and
an analysis of Oracle's financial
statements.

Oracle has achieved impressive savings--hundreds of millions of dollars, in fact--by
re-engineering business processes around the Internet. But it looks like Oracle isn't
going to slide in safely this year or next on the many more billions it has promised
to save.--Mitch Wagner

RE: RE: MetaSlop

2001-02-27 Thread Jim Conboy

I would not leave the impression that I was trying to blame recent problems solely on
increasing usage. I doubt this week is THAT much worse than 3 weeks ago when Metalink
was slow but usable. And I might acknowledge a little more culbability in bringing
about the current situation - force-feeding virtually all support to the Web,
collecting money up front, which ought to give a decent indication of potential
demand, then failing to make provisions to supply the necessary services. I'm certain
that its not easy, but it ain't cheap either and we don't get rebates, so I'm not
disposed to be real understanding.

Re: Am I too hard on the developper ?

2001-02-16 Thread Jim Conboy

Consider yourself lucky. Last week I had a doh!veloper tell me (I swear I'm not
making this up) that he had to test his code in production because "the test
environment got messed up and its too hard to figure out how to make it right again".
He's a really junior guy and actually quite brilliant so I was gentle with him, but
now I'm REALLY worried about who's example he was following.

Jim

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/16/01 12:26PM >>>
Yeah but it is so much work to add 10 new fields .

The latest one is 'Do we have a tool that can compare
the dev and the test environment so we know what we
have to put in test ?' .

Not only it is too hard to do 10 alter tables but also
it is too hard to make a list of what is changed (I'm
not even talking about planning stuff).

Here, the 2/3 of IT is from one of the biggest
consultant firm (Cap Gemini Ernst and Young, oups it
slips out ...) so 99.9% of the 2/3 are developpers
asking questions like " Can you tell me again the
difference between a primary key and a foreign key".

It's 18:20 , I'm going home and I'll send a less nasty
email on monday morning.

RE: Oracle on Unix

2001-02-07 Thread Jim Conboy

FYI, the box of 817 CDs I got included a sheet of paper warning you to cd out of the
cdrom directory before trying to switch CDs.

Jim

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/07/01 03:45PM >>>
Yes,
The java installer is the same look and feel across all platforms. With
8.1.7 you have 2 CD's on some systems. Therefore in order to switch CD's
mid install you need to issue the runInstaller command from a directory
other than the CD-ROM. Such as:
$ cd /home/oracle
$ /cdrom/runInstaller
Doing this allows you to unmount the cdrom and switch cd's when you need to.
This info is not in the readme's. It was not on metalink the last time I
checked. And, as you would expect, you need to talk to 3 different support
techs to get someone aware of this little trick.

Dear All,

I've been working with Oracle on NT for years, never had the one on unix.
Now, I am trying to use the one on Linux. I see that the installation screen
is just the same as on NT. Is this also the same with other unix platform
such as AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, etc?

TIA

Nosie

Re: How to use Export Transportable Tablespaces

2001-02-06 Thread Jim Conboy

There are straightforward examples in the 8.1.7 documentation. I don't know if that
feature is available in 8.1.6. But regardless, you should investigate WHY the
fromuser/touser didn't achieve the desired results or I fear you'll be disappointed
again.

Jim

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/06/01 12:22PM >>>

Does anyone have an example of how to use transportable tablespaces with
export/import.

I want export a user (8.1.6 database) source and import fromuser
touser(8.1.6 database) target.

I tried to import fromuser/ touser, but many contraints were not created and
lost some data
so I was told to try transportable tables. Can't find any good examples on
how to use this new
feature.

Can someone please help me.

Thanks
Larry
