Which server do u use for 9ias ?

2003-09-30 Thread Louis BROUILLETTE
At our university, we are planning to use 9iasR2 in production in a near
future. What type of server do you people use for it? Does it need a lot
of memory, more than 1 cpu ?

It will mostly be used with modplsql procedure and we hope to deploy
Discoverer.

We are thinking about a X series IBM server with 4 Gig of memory. Would it
be better to have 2 2.4Gh cpu or 1 3Gh cpu ?

Any thought will be appreciated.

Hi Listers,

One of my remote Clients is facing a problem with Redo Logs. The Redo Logs
and the Archive logs in turn have suddenly started to generate at an
alarming Rate. This has suddenly started from the last 1 week without any
changes to Database Configuration or any other system settings (as per client).

Can anyone please help me and let me know all the reasons that could be
responsible for this behavior. Any Help from u will be appreciated.

RE: Compare Schema with data

2003-06-17 Thread Louis BROUILLETTE
Rich,

I meant that I would compare the 2 "insert statements" files with the
"files compare" of TOAD instead of comparing with sdiff. It's a lot easier
to see the differences between the files.

Hi Louis,

That sounds cool, but where can you compare table data in TOAD? The only
options I see (TOAD 7.5 registered and TOAD 7.5.3.28 BETA w/DBA module) are
for the object definitions of schemas and not the data itself.

Anyone successfully installed 9ias on AIX 4.3.3 ?

2003-06-17 Thread Louis BROUILLETTE
Hi list,

Is there someone out there who successfully installed 9ias (9.0.2.0.1) on
AIX 4.3.3 ?

If yes, were you able to meet all the pre-requisites (OS patches, java
version, ...) ?

My installation fails in the configuration tools (dbca). I always get a
"Lost contact" message. My sys admin could not get his hands on some OS
patches (vacpp.dax.adt, vacpp.vb.adt) and our java version is newer than
the one listed in the pre-requisites (we have build ca131-20021102 instead
of cal131-20020821).

Any ideas ???

Re: Follow-up: It's NOT possible to set role in db's logon

2003-01-29 Thread Louis BROUILLETTE
Hi Roy,

I don't know if you solved your problem yet but I have a similar situation
here. I have an Oracle account used by PHP programs (third party programs)
to access some tables. I don't want anyone to log in to the database with
this account unless the connection comes from apache and from our web
server machine. So what I did is that I created a logon trigger on that
schema and if the conditions are not met, then I raise an application error
and the connection dies.

As you know, these informations (program, machine, etc...) can be found in
v$session and the SID of the current session can be found with "select sid
from v$mystat where rownum = 1".

HTH.

Greetings all,

I'm trying to support a COTS application that is back-end agnostic & makes
only minimal use of security on the db. In particular, it requires that
users be granted a default role that has *very* heavy permissions--enough to
do some major mischief should they ever figure out how to use odbc or
sql*plus.

My collegues & I have devised a kludgy method for getting around this
problem, involving a shill startup program that turns the default-ness of
the role on & off in conjunction with users opening & closing the client
program. This works, but is a pain to maintain.

I've recently discovered the v$session.program field & am now wondering
whether it would be possible to use the new-fangled logon system trigger to
set the role only for cases where v$session.program = the COTS client.

Can anybody comment as to whether this is a viable approach on an 8.1.6
database & if not, on a 9i db?

In particular, there are two things I don't know--first, how to select just
the one row in v$session that corresponds to the current connection. If a
user was to start up the COTS client & then connect to the same db via
sql*plus, I would want the role set *only* for the COTS client session. My
best thought so far here is to use the most recently started connection
based on v$session.logon_time.

Second, whether the SET ROLE statement is legal in a logon trigger.

All help will be most welcome.

Thanks!

For what I can recall, there was an "adjustment" in 1582 in the calendar to

Don't believe me?? Try this:

create table test(the_date date);

insert into test values (to_date('10-05-1582','mm-dd-') );

select to_char(the_date, 'mm/dd/') from test;

What do you get? :-))

Re: How to get rid of a column default value ?

2002-10-04 Thread Louis BROUILLETTE

Thanks Dale, Michael and Ron.

The "default null" is what I thought about first and it almost does the
job. It's just that it appears like there is a default value which is
null. If I don't include the DEFAULT clause, it does nothing. I think
I'll have to live with the "default null".
