RE: POLL: Database to DBA ratio

2003-03-11 Thread Robin Ilardi
I currently have 5 development databases and 1 beta production database
that I administer, so that's 6:1, but I'm also the Sys Admin for these
servers as well. These are also very small databases.

We have 10 development databases that I support directly plus 5
implementation/testing databases that I support as second level and one
production snapshot datamart.

16:1

However, there are also DBAs who support each project. That would make the
ratio closer to 4:1 or 3:1.

I'm trying to build a case for management that we need additional DBAs so
I'd like to take a quick poll if I may. What is the ratio of Oracle
databases to DBAs in your shop? This includes development and production
databases. At our shop it's 33:1.

RE: Client Connection-SQLNET and?/or? ODBC.

2001-07-10 Thread Robin Ilardi

Yes, you do need to have Net8 installed in order for Cold Fusion to connect
to the database through ODBC. It uses ODBC through SqlNet. First set up
the Sqlnet connection to the database, then set up the ODBC connection using
the service name you used for the Sqlnet connection.

Dear DBA Colleagues,

Please pardon me if this question is a bit elementary, but this concerns
applications connecting to Oracle.

Most of our Oracle Apps are PowerBuilder-based such that we use the
appropriate PowerBuilder DLLs and SQLNET on the Client to connect up to
SQLNET and the Oracle RDBMS on the server.

A new application we are proposing to build is Web-based, with Browser
clients connecting to a Linux (Red Hat 7.x) machine running Apache and Cold
Fusion. This Linux machine will then act as a client, connecting to the
Oracle 8i RDBMS running on a Compaq (DEC) Alpha with Digital Unix Version 5.
On the Linux box, we will of course need to specify the Cold Fusion DLLs to
allow connection to the Oracle 8i Database.

But my issue is this:
On the Linux machine running as the client, if we do ODBC, do we need
to do SQLNET (Net 8) as well?

I.E. What is it on the client that actually makes the connection to the
SQLNET (Net 8) running on the server:
- ODBC itselfor
- ODBC through SQLNET?

Thanks very much in advance!

has anyone had any luck downloading file 3? It SAYS 800+MB, it downloads
79+MB and says it's done.

I tried both download sites (east and west) that I know of. Are there any
others?

RE: regarding isqlPlus

2001-06-12 Thread Robin Ilardi

The documentation states Earlier versions of the Oracle database may work,
but only Oracle 8i 8.1.7 (Release 3) is supported.

The important thing is to have Oracle's Apache HTTP server, which comes with
either 8.1.7 or 9iAS. I have it installed under 9iAS with an 8.1.7 database
and it seems just fine.

can a version earlier than 8.1.7 be used as the database server in the
3-tier-architecture.

i have 8.1.5 on NT 4.0 service pack 5.

Got it working at home on Windows 2000 with 8.1.7.0.0.

Works just fine, but .sql files are not able to read SQL*Plus commands
 (i.e. column xxx format a10).

As I recall the install was fairly simple.

RE: regarding isqlPlus

2001-06-11 Thread Robin Ilardi

We
have installed iSQLPlus on our development box, and it seems to work fairly
well. The nice thing about it is you don't have to install the client on
the user's PC, it just uses a browser. It does have a bug or two - for
example, if the user does not click on the "Logoff" button and just closes the
browser window, a session is left open in the database. I'd be hesitant
about using it in a production environment until they at least get that
fixed.

You do
have to have an 8.1.7 database installed with the Apache web server, although
you might be able to get away with a lower version of the database as long as
you're using Apache. We are using an 8.1.7 database and the Apache web
server installed with 9iAS, all under NT (not my choice - I'm going to move the
web server to Linux as soon as I can get a box configured).

Robin
