Re: protocol.ora

2002-04-16 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hi

I only have one database running on this machine..

I have read somewhere that you can use sqlnet.ora instead of protocol.ora
?

However, when I had two sets of databases running on the same ORACLE_HOME
and using two listeners for these two sets of databases, I had
complications. The behavior was that the listener that had the
protocol.ora in the directory had to be started after the other one
(somehow the restriction stayed in the memory). If you failed to start the
restricted-listener last, or restarted the open-connection listener after
the restricted-listener is running, then the open-set of databases don't
 have open connections.

 Hope this helps.

archivelog mode

2002-03-08 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hi All

While enabling automatic archiving on our 8.1.7 database I get the
following error :-

ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Managed Standby

ie the database is in archivelog mode and I edit the parameter file to
enable automatic archiving .. I get the error when trying to startup the
database .. these are the parameters that I change -

# log_archive_start = true
# log_archive_dest_1 = location=/u03/oradata/arch
# log_archive_format = arch_%t_%s.arc

Due to this I have to start archiving whenever I restart, using 'alter
system archivelog start'

Any ideas ?

I know that you can view v$instance while the database is not mounted - not
 sure about the other one..

And - straight from the Oracle Concepts Manual (page 126)

Locally managed temporary tablespaces have temporary datafiles (tempfiles),
 which
are similar to ordinary datafiles except that:

Tempfiles are always set to NOLOGGING mode.
You cannot make a tempfile read-only.
 You cannot rename a tempfile.
You cannot create a tempfile with the ALTER DATABASE statement.
Media recovery does not recognize tempfiles:
  – BACKUP CONTROLFILE does not generate any information for tempfiles.
  – CREATE CONTROLFILE cannot specify any information about tempfiles.
Tempfile information is shown in the dictionary view DBA_TEMP_FILES and the
dynamic performance view V$TEMPFILE, but not in DBA_DATA_FILES or the
 V$DATAFILE view.

Looks like I failed my OCP :P

However I have been informed by a fellow DBA that he bought the same book,

these tests.. however when he came to doing the actual he just failed !

Does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Also is it possible to get mock exams that are more reflective of the

Shutdown and archivelog mode

2001-09-03 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hi

Using Oracle 8.1.6.3 on solaris 2.7.

I am trying to put my database in archivelog mode.

When I try to shutdown the database using shutdown immediate, it just sits
there for ages.. (left it for 30 mins).

I've cancelled this and done a shutdown abort. (tried normal shutdown
after that, same)

Due to this when I try to put it archivelog mode after shutdown abort I
get a message saying that the database can't be put into archivelog mode
because recovery is needed.

Processes

2001-08-14 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hi all

We are running Oracle 8.1.6. and OAS 4.0.8.2 on Solaris 2.7

We access the database from a web browser, using the pl/sql cartridge.

My question is how to identify who is running what package..

In instance manager we get a session id, status, username (application
user) and for program wrks@sid(TNS V1-V3)

The application user details are stored in the data access Descriptor
(DAD) in OAS, the user actually logs in as themselves.

wrks@sid(TNS V1-V3), this tells us its a web process.. but nothing else.

Also on the server when run 'top' this is the output...

12653 oracle 1 70 278M 260M cpu/2 40:52 18.17% oracle

How can we tell what this is doing ?

Date / Time

2001-07-10 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hello All

I want to display the time elapsed between two dates - in days, hours,
minutes and seconds.

If I do select date1 - date2, the result is : 12.0194907

Is there a function that will turn the number of days into something more
legible?  Ideally i'd like to do ;

to_char(12.0194907,'DD:HH:MI:SS') but obviously that won't work. Is
there a solution other than writing a complex function myself which will
have to * by 24, / by 60 and substr etc to get the different bits of the
number?

Please CC any replies directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks in advance,
Saj.

Upgrade 8.0.4 to 8.1.6

2001-06-25 Thread Sajid Iqbal

Hello

I am in the process of upgrading from 8.0.4 to 8.1.6.. it asked if I
wanted to migrate my 8.0.4 datafiles to 8.1.6.

I said yes to this and it started migrating, this was on friday. Today
it still seems to be going , its a 8 gig database..; If I click on Finish
it says that the upgrade hasn't finished..

If I click on the cancel it says that if u cancel the database won't be in
the original state.

The status bar has only moved a fraction.

Should it take this long ? Should I cancel ?

TIA
