Hi,

Does Oracle Corp. require you to buy the RDBMS license for the fail-over server (as well) in a
2-node cluster server environment?

Thanks

  Only
  if it's active on the fail over node - if it's passive you don't need a second

Our failover server neither has a standby database nor oracle binaries.

In our Clustered server configuration, when a fail over happens
the entire diskgroups will be de-ported from the primary and imported on the failover server.

So, at any given point only one node will be running oracle..

RE: Re[2]: Oracle the best

2001-11-14 Thread Srinagesh Battula

- You might want to consider using orastack.exe to reduce
the memory requirements. By default, every thread (oracle,tns, svrmgrl,
sqlplus)
takes 1M. That is more than enough of stack space.
I would reduce it to 500K using the orastack.exe.

- In addition to this, you may reduce your SGA to a convenient size.

- Look into 4GT tuning. This will allow oracle to use memory beyond 2G
limitation (incl SGA+PGA ..)

- What are the sort area settings that you have?

CKPTs are not happening with FAST_START_IO_TARGET

2001-06-14 Thread Srinagesh Battula
Title: CKPTs are not happening with FAST_START_IO_TARGET

RDBMS:
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production

OS:
SunOS e6500a 5.6 Generic_105181-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise

The init params are set as follows:
..
db_block_size=8192
db_block_buffers=2
fast_Start_io_target=5000
log_checkpoints_to_alert = TRUE
log_checkpoint_timeout = 2147483647
log_checkpoint_interval = 9

We have 4 Redo log groups with 200M each.

We have a requirement that the instance recovery must be done within 60 secs.
So, we are trying to use the fast_Start_io_target param.
The issue here is, we don't see any checkpoints being done (as seen in the alert logs as well as v$sysstat). THe only checkpoints that we see are the ones that happen during a log switch or if you issue "alter system checkpoint".

Any ideas on why  the checkpoints are not being performed.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Intermedia

2001-05-11 Thread Srinagesh Battula

To install Intermedia as a separate product, the db has to be shutdown for
oracle exe to be relinked
Once the Intermedia product has been installed, the following steps must be
performed to configure it as shown below.

How to configure Intermedia?

Create the CTXSYS tablespace

create tablespace ctxsys datafile '/u02/oradata/dev/ctxsys01.dbf' size 100M
autoextend on next 100M maxsize 1000M;

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib
548:oracle@devdb> pwd
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/ctx/admin

As sys run @dr0csys.sql ctxsys ctxsys temp

As ctxsys @dr0inst.sql /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/ctx/lib/libctxx8.so

As ctxsys
select object_type, count(*) from user_objects group by object_type;
select * from user_libraries ;
@?/ctx/admin/defaults/drdefus.sql

Title: RE: Your views on Quest - Shareplex

Our production runs
on a multi-threaded app.
And, it is the Single
threaded nature of Shareplex with the LONG columns in the db that
did
not make it suitable for
us. Shareplex just could not catch up with the DML activity in our
Production.

  I talked to one of the SharePlex developers. a) Shareplex has handled long columns for as long as she remembers (a
  little more than three years). b) Shareplex has
  recently supported LOB columns in a production release. c) The next version will include multi-threaded posting.
  Mr. Goulet, just out of curiosity (for feedback to the product
  managers), what was it in Eyal Aronoff's response that made you think you
  would not like to use Shareplex?
