RE: Oracle to Excel

2002-11-07 Thread Steve . Parker

This is how I do it:

1)        Set-up an ODBC data source using either the Oracle or MS ODBC driver.
2)        In Excel, use the Date->Get External Data menu option
3)        Specify the ODBC driver
4)        In the Wizard, select the table columns, where and sort  or Untick the box and use MS Query where you can type
in your own query using the SQL button
5)        The data is returned into the spreadsheet

EJB Support in Oracle 9iR2

2002-05-22 Thread Steve . Parker

Hi,

Can anyone confirm if EJB support has been removed from Oracle Database Server Release 2 ?

If so, can they point me to a metalink etc article.  I am sure I read about this somewhere but
can't find any reference to it.

If this is correct, then Oracle revenue should go up as everyone buys Application Server....

RE: Telephone Alerts

2002-05-14 Thread Steve . Parker

If you are looking for a bigger solution, that as well as SMS, using the SendSMS package I mentioned last time, can also
do voice alerts, voice XML,  paging, email etc, based on Scheduled database queries and/or Triggers,
then take a look at Categoric Xalerts.

This is a Java based system that runs on both NT/2000 and Solaris, that allows you to graphically build Alerts to many types of device
based on the recipient and time of day, it also allows people to subscribe to alerts via customisable web pages and
to set how they want to receive the alerts.

There are other alerting packages around but this had the most features and was architecturally better than the other we were looking at.

Simon,

Working with a tools company that provides a monitoring tool for Oracle - we
have had a lot of call for sending alerts to SMS. We've done a fair bit of
testing of various SMS providers in the UK so that we can try to recommend a
valid solution to our customers - that is able to alert a user with a
consistently good response time. The "norm" is to use an "SMS gateway",
where you send a standard email to a an SMS Gateway provider - who then
forward that email in SMS form to your mobile phone. We've tried various
people such as Genie (BT's) now called mmo2, http://www.uboot.com,
http://www.iobox.com etc. etc. all of which have had poor response times at
various times in the day due to user traffic..

There is also the possibility of getting tools that people have pre-built to
send SMS from a desktop - or server.. Many of these are pretty good in GUI
form, but when it comes to command line support, they are usually very
lacking to none - and let's face it if we wanted to use it, or if you wanted
to call it from a shell type script you *need* command line support.. And if
there is command line support - most of the time these are made by people in
other countries, and don't seem to support our UK service providers such as
Orange, One-2-One, and to a slightly lesser extent Vodafone.

If we are asked to provide SMS alerts for our tools, we now point our
customers to a company called Textforce (http://www.textforce.net) which is
actually supposed to be a targeted marketing type site for sending marketing
SMS messages. It's a "pay per message" provider - with each SMS being around
7-8 pence.. The only reason we actually recommend to our customers that they
use this site - is that throughout our entire testing, this site provided
response times (from the time the email was sent, to the time the SMS was
received) of between 30 seconds - 4 minutes consistently! Many of the other
providers, such as genie, or uboot et al have greatly differing response
times - from 20 seconds right up to 14 hours!

I'd still be interested though if anybody has any experience with server
based tools that are available (for things such as Sun, HP, AIX, NT/2000)
that do have command line support, and also support the major UK providers..

Some mobile network providers make use of email gateway for sms. In that
case you have some email address which is redirected by your provider to
your phone.

RE: Oracle CPU Licensing

2002-03-28 Thread Steve . Parker

One thing to be wary of is if you want Standard Edition.
Typically this can only be used on machines up to 4 CPUs.
However, say you want an expandable server that can take 6 CPUs max, but initially you only have 2 CPUs installed,
because the server is CAPABLE of having 6 CPUs, you can only use Enterprise edition.

Dennis,

This doesn't sound right.  Oracle will not try to extort, er, charge money
for CPU's that aren't installed.  Merely having the slots doesn't count.

Having CPU's installed but switched off but installed is not a new
concept,
having been around in the mainframe world for some time.  I wouldn't
think Oracle would try to make you pay for CPU's you can't use.

Best call your Oracle rep for a definitive answer.

        Subject:        RE: Oracle CPU Licensing

An analyst recently made a statement that under CPU licensing "Oracle is
charging for unused CPU slots". I found this very surprising. I can see
two
possible interpretations:
1. If the system is capable of holding 8 CPUs, but I only have 4 CPUs
installed, Oracle would charge me for 8 CPUs. I find this unacceptable.
For
one thing, in some machines, a slot can contain either a CPU or memory.
2. Some vendors (HP I believe) have offered an upgrade on demand
configuration, where the system is delivered with more CPUs than the
customer purchased. If the customer wants additional processing power, the
vendor can switch on the additional CPUs, saving a visit by a customer
engineer. Another possibility would be if I had a way to limit the number
of
CPUs that could execute Oracle. This doesn't sound so bad, since it might
be
easy to increase the number of CPUs without paying additional fees to
Oracle.
Has anyone heard of this type of license interpretation
by Oracle?
Our license renewal is coming up soon and we would prefer to not be
blindsided.

Perhaps Oracle have an A and B list. The A list are told as soon as its

In the UK, "ORAC" was a computer of the cult TV series Blake's Seven.

"Orac was the most sophisticated artifical intelligence in the universe.
It had an amazing array of technical abilities but it also had some
problems."

Problems

It had a snappy voice and was often impatient with anyone unfortunate
enough to ask it a question.  It also showed little concern for the rest of
the crew who it regarded with scorn.  In short, Orac would much rather
spend time contemplating the mysteries of the universe than spending time
with mere mortals.

Sorry for the sideline !

Nowadays it is used by sportsmen etc for exactly what you have described.

Speaking of sugar...

I just returned from Trinidad (on a mission trip to build a church in
Toco).
While working in the 95 degree sun all day we often walked up to the corner
store and bought water and cokes (the coca cola was much sweeter there than
in the US, but also less carbonated). What we also found was a product
called Lucozade (http://www.lucozade.com/). This was a sport drink
essentially made of glucose syrup. From their website - "When you drink
it,
the glucose gets rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream and gives you a
quick burst of energy. Glucose is the natural preferred fuel for the body
becuase of the speed with which it can be digested and absorbed. Once
absorbed it is a readily available source of fuel, whic all cells of the
body can utilise."

Official drink of on-call DBAs.

RE: Standby db license for 8.1.6

2001-03-12 Thread Steve . Parker

Hi,

on the subject of licensing, has anyone used something like HPs Resource
Manager on
HPUX to restrict the amount of CPU usage for Oracle on a multi-CPU system,
and therefore
saved on licensing costs.

It does seems unfair if you need a large server for all your application
processes
which only uses Oracle as a back-end database, that you have to pay as
though Oracle
is using all the CPU power !!

Cheers

FYI this is basically what I'm asking:

I've specified the server as an intel box with 2x750 Mhz cpu, running
either linux or NT.
I've specified 3 scenarios in terms of number of servers and number of
users, and a fourth as an internet-based database server for a web page.

I've asked for the price for each dbms *only*. This should give me an idea
of the relative costs for the databases under a number of conditions. If
the salescritter attempts to bob and weave, that's relevant information as
well.

RE: Oracle Licensing

2001-03-06 Thread Steve . Parker

Dennis,

we have been through this over here in the UK too.

It is Either Universal Power Units (UPU) OR Named Users, you would normally
purchase the lower unless the
figures were so close that you might as well go for unlimited users,
especially if you
expect to need more named users in the future. (Simplifies support renewal
too!)

Some Gotchas...

In Standard edition the min. named user is 5, not UPU/30 ! (Unless its
different outside the UK)
Named Users can also access any number of servers if you
go for the Named-User-Multi-Server option - BUT NOTE if you are running a
load sharing cluster, using OPS
for example or Oracle's hot standby, then this also counts as multi-server
or the combined UPU value for both (all) servers.

The only exception is Failover systems, e.g. using HP's MC/ServiceGuard,
HACMP etc; this requires UPU licences for the
largest server or Named-User-Single_server.

Clear as mud now!

This was how it was explained by our Oracle distributor, eventually.

Well, I bow to your superior wisdom, because I'm damned if I can figure it
out. Here's what I have:

linux box, 2x750MHz intel cpus, want to load Enterprise edition.
That gives me 1500 UPU's.
According to the web page, UPU's are $100 per. That gives $150,000.00
According to the web page, my minimum user count is 1500/30 = 75.
According to the web page, perpetual users are $750 per, so 750x75 =
$56,250.00

Now, do I pay the higher number, the lower number, the sum of the numbers,
or what? I find it hard to believe that Oracle wants $206,250.00 just for
an intel box, but there's nothing on the web page to indicate otherwise.
Obviously this is another case of "give us your credit card, then we'll
tell you how much you've paid".

Can someone clarify this?

(for those who are wondering why I don't just phone a salescritter, I have
three reasons: 1) I need an answer this week, 2) I need an answer in plain
english, and 3) Once a salecritter smells blood, er, money, it's like
trying to get two-sided tape off your fingers.)

Hi all,
I have a client that wants to implement an Automated Standby DB
using
Oracle 8i. Has anyone here attempted this and have any pro's and con's on
it. It looks pretty simple and straight forward to me, seems the biggest
problem will be sizing the redo logs correctly. Any advice would be

appreciated.
